Basics of Halal & Haraam
The principles of what is lawful and unlawful in a Muslim’s life – income, finance, business, dress, speech, family, media and more – with Quran and Hadith references.
Islam is a complete way of life. Every action of a Muslim, from how they earn and spend, to how they speak, dress, trade, relax and treat others, falls under one of the rulings of the Shariah. Knowing what is halal (lawful) and what is haram (unlawful) is therefore not a matter for scholars alone; it is part of the basic knowledge every Muslim needs to live with confidence and peace of mind.
The guiding principle is mercy. Allah has made the good things lawful and forbidden only what is harmful, and in matters of daily life the starting point is permissibility unless clear evidence says otherwise. The list of haram things is short compared with the vast space of what is allowed, and even what is forbidden may become permitted in genuine necessity. Allah says: 'Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship' (2:185).
This section explains the principles behind halal and haram across the whole of life: worship, money, business, speech, family, dress, entertainment and the environment. Where the four Sunni schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali) differ, the main views are given briefly and respectfully. For personal situations, especially in finance and family matters, consult a qualified scholar or a trusted fatwa body in your country.
