Between the clearly lawful and the clearly unlawful lie doubtful matters, and avoiding them protects one's faith and honour.
Nu'man ibn Bashir narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters which many people do not know. Whoever avoids the doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honour, and whoever falls into them falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd grazing near a sanctuary who is about to graze in it. Truly every king has a sanctuary, and Allah's sanctuary is what He has forbidden. Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh; if it is sound the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt. Truly it is the heart' (Bukhari 52, Muslim 1599).
A matter becomes doubtful (mushbooh) for several reasons: the evidence may be unclear, scholars may genuinely disagree, the facts may be unknown (for example, the ingredients of a product), or it may be a means that often leads to haram. Doubt is relative: what is unclear to an ordinary person may be clear to a scholar. Therefore the first step is to learn and ask people of knowledge (16:43).
The Prophet ﷺ gave a simple rule: 'Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt' (Tirmidhi 2518, Nasa'i 5711, sahih). He also said: 'Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your soul and you dislike people to find out about it' (Muslim 2553). A sincere believer's conscience, shaped by knowledge and taqwa, is a valuable guide in grey areas.
At the same time, Islam forbids extremism and imagining doubts where there are none. Allah says: 'Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship' (2:185) and 'He has not placed upon you in religion any hardship' (22:78). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Those who go to extremes are ruined', repeating it three times (Muslim 2670). It is not required to investigate every item endlessly, to refuse food from Muslim hosts out of suspicion, or to treat what is permissible as forbidden.
Where qualified scholars differ on a matter based on evidence, a person may follow the view of a trustworthy scholar or their school, without condemning those who follow another valid view. Choosing the cautious view out of taqwa is praiseworthy, but forcing it on others as the only truth is not. Seeking only the easiest opinions in every issue to satisfy one's desires, however, is blameworthy.
Avoiding doubtful things builds a protective fence around the haram. A person who is careless with small doubtful matters gradually becomes comfortable with the clearly forbidden, while one who is careful keeps their heart sound, and as the hadith teaches, a sound heart makes the whole life sound.
