Faith & Shahadah

What are the five pillars of Islam?

The Prophet ﷺ said Islam is built on five things: bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger, establishing the prayer, giving zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting in Ramadan. The Shahadah is the foundation; the other four are acts of worship that every adult Muslim must fulfil when their conditions apply (for example, Hajj and zakat only for those who can afford them).

What are the articles of faith (Iman) a Muslim must believe in?

A Muslim believes in Allah, His angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the Last Day, and in divine decree (qadar), its good and its bad. These six were taught by the Prophet ﷺ when the angel Jibril asked him about Iman. Together they are summarised in Iman-e-Mufassal, which many children in Pakistan learn by heart.

How does a person become a Muslim?

A person becomes Muslim by sincerely believing in and saying the Shahadah: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah" (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). No ceremony, fee or witness is required, though saying it in front of other Muslims helps them support the new Muslim. It is recommended (and in the view of some scholars required) to take a ghusl after accepting Islam, and then begin learning the prayer step by step. All previous sins are forgiven on accepting Islam.

What does the Shahadah (Kalima) actually mean?

"La ilaha illallah" means that nothing deserves worship except Allah: we pray to, rely on and obey Him alone. "Muhammadur Rasulullah" means accepting Muhammad ﷺ as Allah's final Messenger, believing what he conveyed and following his Sunnah. Saying it with the tongue, believing it in the heart and living by it in actions is what gives the Kalima its full weight.

What is the difference between Islam, Iman and Ihsan?

In the famous Hadith of Jibril, the Prophet ﷺ explained Islam as the outward acts (Shahadah, prayer, zakat, fasting, Hajj), Iman as the inner beliefs (Allah, angels, books, messengers, the Last Day and qadar), and Ihsan as "worshipping Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then truly He sees you." They are three levels of one religion: practice, belief, and excellence with sincerity.

What is Tawheed, and why is shirk the greatest sin?

Tawheed is believing that Allah is One — alone in creating and running the universe, alone in deserving worship, and unique in His names and attributes. Shirk is giving any of this to someone else, such as praying to or prostrating to other than Allah. The Quran says Allah may forgive anything else for whom He wills, but not shirk if a person dies upon it without repenting. Anyone who repents from it sincerely during their life is forgiven.

Is belief in the finality of Prophethood (Khatm-e-Nubuwwat) part of Iman?

Yes. Muslims believe Muhammad ﷺ is the last Prophet and Messenger, and no new prophet will come after him. The Quran calls him "the Seal of the Prophets," and he ﷺ compared himself to the final brick that completed a building. This belief is agreed upon by all Muslim scholars throughout history.

I get bad thoughts and doubts about faith (waswasa). Am I sinful?

No. Unwanted thoughts that you dislike are not counted against you, as long as you do not act on them or speak them out of conviction. When some Companions complained of such thoughts, the Prophet ﷺ said that hating them "is clear faith." Seek refuge in Allah (A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim), ignore the thought, and keep yourself busy with dhikr. If waswasa becomes overwhelming, it is also wise to speak to a trusted scholar or a doctor, as it can be a form of OCD.

Can Allah forgive my major sins? How do I make tawbah?

Yes — Allah tells us never to despair of His mercy, for He forgives all sins for those who repent. Sincere tawbah means stopping the sin, feeling genuine regret, and firmly intending not to return to it. If the sin involved someone else's rights (money, property, honour), you must also return what is due or seek their forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said the one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin.

If everything is written by Allah (taqdeer), why should I make an effort?

Belief in qadar means Allah knows and has decreed everything, but He has also given us choice and will hold us accountable for what we choose. We do not know what is written, so we are commanded to act, work hard, make dua and then trust Allah with the outcome. Qadar is a comfort after something happens, not an excuse beforehand for leaving duties or committing sins.

Quran

Do I get reward for reading the Quran in Arabic if I don't understand it?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said that for every letter of the Quran you recite you get a good deed, multiplied tenfold, and that one who struggles while reciting gets a double reward. At the same time, the Quran was revealed to be understood and acted upon, so try to read a translation or tafseer alongside your recitation — even a few verses a day.

Can I touch the Quran without wudu?

According to all four madhhabs, including the Hanafi school, touching the Arabic text of the Mushaf requires wudu; this is based on "none touch it except the purified" and the Prophet's ﷺ letter to Amr ibn Hazm. You may recite from memory without wudu, and you may hold the Quran with a separate cloth or cover. A book that is mostly translation or tafseer is treated more lightly, though many Hanafi scholars still recommend wudu.

Can I read the Quran on my phone without wudu?

Most contemporary scholars, including many Hanafi muftis, say yes: a phone screen is not a Mushaf, and the text is only light on the screen, so you may read it without wudu. However, you should avoid touching the part of the screen where the verses are displayed, and being in wudu is always better. A person in a state of janabah should still not recite the Quran, even from a phone.

Can a woman read the Quran during her period (haiz)?

This is a matter of scholarly difference. The Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say a menstruating woman (and a person in janabah) should not recite the Quran, based on a hadith in Tirmidhi; the Maliki school and some other scholars permit recitation from memory, especially for a teacher or student who fears forgetting. In the Hanafi view she may still make dhikr, read duas and the Quranic duas with the intention of dua, listen to recitation, and read translation and tafseer without touching the Arabic text.

How often should I complete (khatam) the Quran?

There is no fixed obligation, but the Prophet ﷺ advised Abdullah ibn Amr to complete it in a month, and then allowed him to do it in seven days. Many scholars recommend at least one khatam a month and discourage less than three days, so that it can be read with reflection. Regularity matters more than speed — a small daily portion read consistently is best. HolyWayz has a Khatam planner to split the Quran into daily portions.

Is learning tajweed necessary?

Allah says "recite the Quran with measured recitation (tarteel)." Scholars say it is obligatory to avoid clear mistakes that change letters or meanings, and the finer rules of tajweed are highly recommended. Do not let this stop you from reading: start with Noorani Qaida, learn from a qualified teacher if you can, and keep improving — the one who struggles gets a double reward.

What is Sajdah-e-Tilawat and when must I do it?

There are 14 places in the Quran (in the Hanafi count) where a prostration is performed on reciting or hearing the verse. In the Hanafi school it is wajib for both the reciter and the listener; the majority of scholars consider it a strongly recommended sunnah. It is one sajdah: say "Allahu Akbar", go into sajdah, say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" at least three times, and rise with "Allahu Akbar" — no tashahhud or salam. Wudu and facing the Qibla are required, and it can be done later if you cannot do it at once.

What is the virtue of Ayat al-Kursi?

Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) is the greatest verse of the Quran, describing Allah's life, knowledge and power. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites it before sleeping will have a guardian from Allah through the night and Shaytan will not come near him. It is also commonly recited after each obligatory prayer and in the morning and evening adhkar.

Why do Muslims read Surah Al-Kahf on Friday?

Several narrations mention a special light and forgiveness for one who reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday (from Thursday sunset to Friday sunset), and scholars accept this practice as recommended. In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ also said that whoever memorises the first ten verses of Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal. It is a sunnah, not an obligation.

Is reading Surah Al-Ikhlas three times equal to a whole Quran?

The Prophet ﷺ said Surah Al-Ikhlas is equal to one third of the Quran, because it summarises Tawheed, one of the Quran's main themes. Scholars explain this is about reward and meaning; it does not replace actually reading the Quran or completing a khatam. It is a beloved surah to recite often, especially in the morning, evening and before sleep.

I am an adult and never learned to read the Quran. Is it too late?

It is never too late. The Prophet ﷺ said "the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it," and many Companions learned it as adults. Start with the Arabic letters and Noorani Qaida (available in HolyWayz under Learn), practise 10–15 minutes daily, and find a teacher who can correct your pronunciation, online or at your local mosque.

Prayer (Namaz) نماز

How many prayers are obligatory each day, and how many rak'at?

Five prayers are obligatory every day and night, as given to the Prophet ﷺ on the night of Mi'raj: Fajr 2 fard, Zuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4 — 17 fard rak'at in total. Along with these, Witr (3 rak'at after Isha) is wajib in the Hanafi school and a strongly recommended sunnah for the majority. The sunnah mu'akkadah prayers (such as 2 before Fajr, 4 before and 2 after Zuhr, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha in Hanafi practice) carry great reward and should not be left habitually.

When does the time for each prayer start and end?

Fajr: from true dawn until sunrise. Zuhr: from just after the sun passes its zenith until an object's shadow equals its length (majority) or twice its length (Imam Abu Hanifa). Asr: from the end of Zuhr until sunset, but delaying it until the sun turns yellow is disliked. Maghrib: from sunset until the twilight disappears. Isha: from then until dawn, preferably before midnight. No prayer should be started at the exact moments of sunrise, zenith and sunset.

I have missed many prayers in the past. How do I make up qaza prayers?

Missed fard prayers remain a debt and must be made up; the Prophet ﷺ said whoever forgets or sleeps through a prayer should pray it when he remembers. In the Hanafi school Witr is also made up, while sunnah prayers are not (except Fajr's sunnah with its fard on the same day before noon). If you cannot remember the number, make a careful estimate and pray, for example, with the intention "the first (or last) Fajr that I owe." Pray a few extra qaza prayers daily, avoid the forbidden times, and also make sincere tawbah for missing them.

What should I do if I forget a rak'ah or make a mistake in prayer (Sajdah Sahw)?

If you miss a wajib act (such as the first sitting, or Surah al-Fatihah in a rak'ah), or delay a fard or wajib by mistake, you do Sajdah Sahw. In the Hanafi method, after the final tashahhud you give one salam to the right, make two sajdahs, then sit and read tashahhud, durood and dua and finish with salam; the Shafi'i school does it before the salam. If you realise you missed a whole rak'ah before ending the prayer, stand up, complete it and do Sajdah Sahw. If you miss a fard act (like a ruku or a sajdah) and do not make it up, the prayer must be repeated.

I am not sure whether I prayed three or four rak'at. What do I do?

The majority of scholars say build on certainty: take the lower number, complete the prayer and do Sajdah Sahw. The Hanafi school adds detail: if such doubt is rare for you, start the prayer again; if it happens often, go with what you think is most likely; if you cannot decide either way, take the lower number. In both of the last two cases, do Sajdah Sahw at the end.

Who must attend Jumu'ah prayer, and what if I miss it?

Jumu'ah is obligatory on every adult, sane, healthy, resident Muslim man; women, children, travellers and the sick are exempt, though their Jumu'ah is valid if they attend. It is two fard rak'at in congregation after the khutbah and replaces Zuhr. If you miss it, pray four rak'at of Zuhr instead. Leaving Jumu'ah without excuse is a serious sin; it is sunnah to take a ghusl, wear clean clothes and arrive early.

How do I pray while travelling (qasr)?

A traveller shortens the four-rak'at fard prayers (Zuhr, Asr, Isha) to two; Fajr and Maghrib stay the same. In the Hanafi school this applies when you travel about 48 miles (roughly 78 km) or more from your town and intend to stay less than 15 days at your destination; qasr is then required, not optional. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) use a similar distance but a stay of about four days, regard qasr as a concession, and also allow combining Zuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha while travelling, which Hanafis do not (except at Arafah and Muzdalifah). If you pray behind a resident imam, pray the full four rak'at with him.

What are the essential (fard) parts of the prayer?

In the Hanafi school the conditions before prayer are: purity of body, clothes and place, covering the awrah, facing the Qibla, the prayer time having entered, and intention. Inside the prayer the fard acts are: the opening takbir, standing (qiyam), recitation, ruku, the two sajdahs, and sitting for the final tashahhud. Other schools list a few more (for example Surah al-Fatihah and calmness are fard for Shafi'is). The Prophet ﷺ told a man who rushed his prayer to pray again because he had not prayed, so do every position calmly.

Is Witr prayer obligatory, and how is it prayed?

In the Hanafi school Witr is wajib: three rak'at with one sitting after the second and salam at the end of the third, and in the third rak'at you say takbir after the surah, raise your hands and recite Dua-e-Qunoot before ruku. The other schools consider Witr a strongly emphasised sunnah and allow it as one or more rak'at. Its time is after Isha until Fajr, and the Prophet ﷺ advised making Witr the last prayer of the night if you trust yourself to wake up.

How serious is it to skip salah?

Deliberately leaving an obligatory prayer is among the gravest sins; the Prophet ﷺ said that between a person and disbelief is abandoning the prayer. Scholars differ on whether a lazy non-praying Muslim leaves Islam (the Hanbali view) or is a major sinner (the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi'i view), but all agree it is extremely serious. If you have fallen behind, start today with the next prayer, make up what you missed, and ask Allah for help — He loves those who return to Him.

What is the reward of praying in congregation (jama'at)?

The Prophet ﷺ said prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times better than praying alone. For men, praying the fard prayers in the mosque with jama'at is a strongly emphasised sunnah close to wajib in the Hanafi school (and obligatory in the Hanbali school), unless there is a valid excuse. Women may attend the mosque with proper modesty, though the Prophet ﷺ said their prayer at home is better for them.

Purity: Wudu, Ghusl & Tayammum

What are the obligatory (fard) parts of wudu?

According to the Quran (Al-Ma'idah 5:6), the Hanafi school counts four fard acts: washing the whole face, washing both arms including the elbows, wiping (masah) at least a quarter of the head, and washing both feet including the ankles. Other schools add intention and doing them in order (Shafi'i, Hanbali) or without long breaks (Maliki, Hanbali). Saying Bismillah, washing the hands, rinsing the mouth and nose, using miswak and washing each part three times are sunnah. Make sure no spot is left dry — the Prophet ﷺ warned about dry heels.

What breaks wudu?

All scholars agree that wudu breaks with anything coming out of the front or back passage (urine, stool, wind, madhi), deep sleep while lying or leaning, and losing consciousness. In the Hanafi school it also breaks with blood, pus or vomit (a mouthful) that flows out of the body, and with laughing aloud during prayer. Touching one's private part or the opposite gender breaks wudu in the Shafi'i school (and in some cases for Malikis and Hanbalis), but not in the Hanafi school. Eating camel meat breaks wudu only in the Hanbali school.

I keep doubting whether my wudu has broken. What should I do?

Certainty is not removed by doubt. If you know you made wudu and only doubt whether it broke, your wudu is still valid; the Prophet ﷺ said not to leave the prayer unless you hear a sound or notice a smell. Ignore such doubts, especially if they are frequent, as acting on them only increases waswasa. If you are sure you made wudu but doubt whether you washed a part, and the doubt comes after finishing, ignore it.

When is ghusl (full bath) obligatory?

Ghusl becomes fard after janabah (sexual intercourse, even without ejaculation, or discharge of semen with desire, including a wet dream), after a woman's menstruation (haiz) ends, and after post-natal bleeding (nifas) ends. Most scholars also require it for a non-Muslim on accepting Islam if they were in janabah, and recommend it in any case. Ghusl is sunnah for Jumu'ah, the two Eids, ihram and the day of Arafah. Until you take ghusl, you cannot pray, touch the Quran or (in janabah) recite it.

How do I perform ghusl correctly?

In the Hanafi school ghusl has three fard acts: rinsing the mouth thoroughly, putting water into the nose up to the soft part, and washing the entire body so that not even a hair's breadth stays dry. The sunnah way, as Aisha described the Prophet's ﷺ ghusl, is: make the intention, wash the hands, wash the private parts and any impurity, make wudu, pour water over the head three times, then over the right and left sides of the body. Remove anything that stops water reaching the skin, and women with braided hair need only make sure water reaches the roots.

When can I do tayammum instead of wudu or ghusl, and how?

Tayammum is allowed when water is not available (in the Hanafi school, about a mile or more away), or when using it would cause illness or delay recovery, or there is only enough for drinking. Make the intention, strike both palms on clean earth, dust or stone, wipe the whole face, strike again and wipe both arms up to and including the elbows (the Hanafi method; some others wipe only the hands once). The same tayammum works for both wudu and ghusl, and it ends with whatever breaks wudu or when you can use water again.

Can I wipe over my socks instead of washing my feet?

Yes, wiping over leather khuffs is established from the Prophet ﷺ, provided you put them on after a complete wudu. The time limit is one day and night for a resident and three days and nights for a traveller, starting from the first time wudu breaks. In the Hanafi school this applies only to leather socks or thick socks that stay up by themselves, do not let water through and can be walked in; ordinary thin cotton or nylon socks are not valid for masah in the Hanafi view, though some scholars of other schools allow them.

What is istinja and what are the toilet etiquettes?

Istinja is cleaning the private parts after urinating or passing stool, with water, or with clean stones or tissue, and best of all tissue followed by water. Use the left hand, do not face or turn your back to the Qibla (especially in open spaces), and avoid getting urine splashes on your body or clothes. Enter with the left foot reciting the dua "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith" and leave with the right foot saying "Ghufranak."

Some urine or blood got on my clothes. Can I pray in them?

Your body, clothes and place of prayer must be clean of najasah. In the Hanafi school, heavy impurity (such as urine, stool or flowing blood) up to the size of a dirham (about the size of the palm's hollow) is excused, though praying with it is disliked and it should be washed; more than that makes the prayer invalid. Wash the affected area until the impurity and its traces are gone (three times is the common practice for invisible impurity). If you only discover it after praying, the Hanafi view is to repeat the prayer if the amount was more than the excused limit.

Is wudu valid with nail polish or waterproof makeup?

No. Wudu and ghusl require water to reach every part that must be washed, and ordinary nail polish, waterproof makeup or a thick layer of paint forms a barrier, so the wudu is not valid until it is removed. Henna (mehndi) only leaves colour and does not block water, so it is fine. So-called "breathable" polishes are disputed; many scholars advise caution, so ask a trusted local scholar before relying on them.

What may a woman not do during her period, and does she make up prayers?

During haiz and nifas a woman does not pray or fast, does not perform tawaf, and (in the majority view) does not touch or recite the Quran; marital intercourse is also not allowed. After she becomes pure she takes ghusl and makes up the missed Ramadan fasts, but not the missed prayers — this is a mercy from Allah, as Aisha explained. She can still make dhikr, dua and durood, and listen to the Quran. Bleeding outside the normal pattern (istihadah) is treated differently, so for irregular cycles consult a female scholar or a trusted mufti.

Fasting & Ramadan

What breaks the fast?

The fast is broken by deliberately eating, drinking or having intercourse between true dawn (Subh Sadiq) and sunset. Deliberately vomiting a mouthful, smoking, and (in the Hanafi school) anything intentionally entering the stomach or brain through a body opening, such as nasal or ear drops, also break it. Swallowing your own saliva, tasting food without swallowing, a bath, applying oil, kohl or eye drops, and involuntary vomiting do not break the fast in the Hanafi school.

Reference: Al-Baqarah 2:187 · Sunan Abi Dawud 2380

I ate or drank by mistake while fasting. Is my fast broken?

No. If you genuinely forgot you were fasting, your fast is still valid; the Prophet ﷺ said Allah fed you and gave you drink, so complete your fast. Stop as soon as you remember and spit out what is in your mouth. This is the view of the Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools; the Maliki school requires making it up for an obligatory fast.

Who is exempt from fasting in Ramadan?

Fasting is obligatory on every adult, sane, healthy, resident Muslim. Travellers and people who are ill (where fasting would harm them or delay recovery) may leave the fast and make it up later; women in haiz or nifas must not fast and make it up later. Pregnant or breastfeeding women who fear for themselves or the baby may also postpone. The elderly and the chronically ill who can never fast give fidyah instead. Children are not obliged until puberty, but should be gently trained.

Reference: Al-Baqarah 2:183-185 · Jami at-Tirmidhi 715

What is fidyah and who pays it?

Fidyah is a compensation for a fast that a person can never make up, such as a very elderly person or someone with a permanent illness with no hope of recovery. For each missed fast, they feed one poor person; in the Hanafi school the amount equals one sadaqat al-fitr (half a sa' of wheat or its value), which is announced each year in Pakistan. Someone who is only temporarily ill or travelling does not pay fidyah — they must make up the fasts later. If a person who paid fidyah later regains the strength to fast, the Hanafi view is that they should make up the fasts.

What is the kaffarah for deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast?

All four schools agree that breaking a Ramadan fast by intercourse requires kaffarah as well as making up the day. In the Hanafi and Maliki schools, deliberately eating or drinking without excuse also requires kaffarah; in the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools it requires only qaza (plus repentance). The kaffarah, as in the hadith of the man who came to the Prophet ﷺ, is to free a slave; if not possible, fast 60 consecutive days; if unable, feed 60 poor people. Breaking a voluntary fast or a qaza fast requires only a make-up, not kaffarah.

What are the sunnahs of suhoor and iftar, and do I need to say the niyyah aloud?

The Prophet ﷺ said: take suhoor, for there is blessing in it — even a sip of water — and delaying it close to dawn is sunnah. He also said people remain upon good as long as they hasten the iftar, so break your fast as soon as the sun sets, ideally with dates or water. Intention is in the heart; waking up for suhoor is already an intention, and saying it aloud is not required. In the Hanafi school the intention for a Ramadan fast may be made the night before or even during the day before midday, while the majority require it before dawn.

When is Laylat al-Qadr and what should I do on it?

Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months; the Quran was revealed on it. The Prophet ﷺ told us to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th); many hope for the 27th, but its exact date is hidden so that we strive on all of them. Spend it in prayer, Quran recitation, dhikr and sincere dua; the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha to say "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni." Whoever stands in prayer on it with faith and hope of reward is forgiven his past sins.

What is Taraweeh and how many rak'at is it?

Taraweeh is the night prayer of Ramadan, prayed after Isha and before Witr. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan with faith and hope of reward will have his past sins forgiven, and Umar (RA) gathered the people behind one imam. The Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold it is 20 rak'at, a strongly emphasised sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) for men and women; some scholars hold 8 rak'at is also sufficient. Completing the whole Quran in Taraweeh during the month is a cherished practice.

Do injections, eye drops, inhalers or toothpaste break the fast?

In the Hanafi school eye drops do not break the fast, and most contemporary scholars say injections into the muscle or vein for medicine do not break it, while nutritional drips are disputed. Asthma inhalers are considered to break the fast by many Hanafi scholars in the subcontinent, while some other scholars disagree; if you need one, you may be among those excused, so consult a mufti and your doctor. Miswak is fine; toothpaste is disliked (makruh) in the Hanafi school and breaks the fast if any is swallowed, so it is better used before dawn.

Should a pregnant or breastfeeding woman fast?

If she fears harm to herself or her baby, she may leave the fast; the Prophet ﷺ said Allah has relieved the pregnant and nursing woman of fasting. In the Hanafi school she only makes up the missed days later, with no fidyah. In the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, if she left it only out of fear for the baby, she makes up the days and also pays fidyah. Her doctor's advice is an important part of the decision.

Which voluntary (nafl) fasts are recommended?

Recommended fasts include six days of Shawwal after Eid (with Ramadan, like fasting the whole year), the Day of Arafah for non-pilgrims (expiates two years of sins), the Day of Ashura (10th Muharram, which expiates the previous year, preferably with the 9th or 11th), Mondays and Thursdays, and the three "white days" (13th, 14th and 15th) of each lunar month. Fasting on the two Eid days is forbidden. A wife should fast voluntary fasts with her husband's consent when he is present.

What is i'tikaf in Ramadan?

I'tikaf is staying in the mosque with the intention of worship. The Prophet ﷺ observed it in the last ten days of Ramadan every year until he passed away. In the Hanafi school, i'tikaf of the last ten days is sunnah mu'akkadah 'ala al-kifayah — if at least one person in the area does it, the rest are relieved. Men do it in a mosque where congregational prayer is held; in the Hanafi school a woman may do it in a dedicated prayer place at home. One leaves only for necessities such as wudu, the toilet or Jumu'ah.

Zakat & Charity

Who has to pay zakat?

Zakat is obligatory on an adult, sane Muslim who owns wealth equal to or above the nisab, beyond basic needs and debts, for one full lunar (Islamic) year. In the Hanafi school a child's or insane person's wealth is exempt, while the majority say zakat is due on it and the guardian pays. It is a pillar of Islam and a right of the poor in the wealth of the rich, not a favour.

What is the nisab for zakat?

The nisab for gold is 7.5 tola (about 87.48 grams) and for silver 52.5 tola (about 612.36 grams), based on 20 dinars and 200 dirhams in the hadith. If someone owns only gold, the gold nisab applies. If they own a mix of cash, savings, business stock, silver or gold, Hanafi scholars combine it all and compare it with the silver nisab, which is lower and better for the poor. Check the current silver price to know the nisab in rupees; HolyWayz has a zakat calculator for this.

How much zakat is due, and on which assets?

Zakat on money is 2.5% (one fortieth) of the total zakatable wealth on your zakat date. Zakatable assets include cash, bank balances, gold and silver, business stock (at sale value), money others owe you that you expect back, and shares or investments held for trade. Your home, car, furniture, personal clothes and tools of work are not zakatable. Livestock and crops (ushr) have their own separate rules.

Who can receive zakat?

Allah names eight categories in Surah At-Tawbah: the poor (fuqara), the needy (masakin), zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be won over, freeing captives, people in debt, those striving in the path of Allah, and stranded travellers. In practice in Pakistan, zakat mostly goes to poor and needy Muslims who do not themselves own nisab-level wealth, and to debtors who cannot repay. Deserving poor relatives are the best recipients, as you get the reward of both zakat and keeping family ties.

Can I give zakat to my parents, children, spouse, or to build a mosque?

You cannot give your zakat to your parents and grandparents, your children and grandchildren, or (in the Hanafi school) your spouse, because supporting them is already your duty; support them from your other money. Siblings, uncles, aunts, nephews and in-laws may receive it if they are deserving. Zakat also cannot be given to a non-Muslim, to descendants of the Prophet ﷺ (Banu Hashim), or to someone who owns the nisab. In the Hanafi school zakat must be handed into the ownership of a deserving person (tamleek), so it cannot be used directly to build mosques, roads or hospitals; ask madrasas and charities how they use it.

Is zakat due on a woman's gold jewellery that she wears?

In the Hanafi school, yes: gold and silver jewellery is zakatable whether worn or stored, once it reaches nisab, based on hadiths such as the woman with gold bangles whom the Prophet ﷺ asked about her zakat. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold that permissible jewellery worn regularly is not zakatable, though jewellery kept as savings is. The jewellery belongs to whoever owns it — if it is the wife's, the zakat is on her, though her husband may pay it on her behalf with her permission.

What is Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana), how much, and when is it given?

Sadaqat al-Fitr is a charity at the end of Ramadan that purifies the fasting person from idle talk and feeds the poor on Eid. In the Hanafi school it is wajib on every Muslim who owns nisab-level wealth beyond basic needs, paid for themselves and their minor children; the majority say it is due on anyone who has food beyond the needs of Eid day. The amount is one sa' of dates, barley or raisins, or half a sa' of wheat (Hanafi); Hanafis allow paying its value in cash, and the rate is announced each year in Pakistan. It must be given before the Eid prayer, and giving it a few days early is allowed.

What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah?

Zakat is a fixed obligatory amount (2.5% of zakatable wealth) with set recipients, while sadaqah is any voluntary charity, of any amount, given to anyone in need — Muslim or not — including good causes like mosques and schools. Even a smile and removing harm from the road are sadaqah. The Prophet ﷺ said charity does not decrease wealth, and that sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity such as a well, a mosque or beneficial knowledge) continues to benefit you after death.

I have savings but also loans or committees (BC). How do I calculate zakat?

On your zakat date, add up all zakatable assets (cash, bank, gold, silver, trade stock, money owed to you that you expect back, and the instalments you have already paid into a committee). Then subtract debts that are due now, such as unpaid bills and instalments currently payable. If the remainder is at least the nisab, pay 2.5% of it. For long-term loans like a home loan, Hanafi scholars generally deduct only the instalments currently due, not the whole loan; ask a mufti for complex business cases.

When should zakat be paid? Can I pay it in Ramadan or in advance?

Zakat becomes due when one lunar year passes from the day you first owned the nisab; that date becomes your yearly zakat date. Many people in Pakistan fix it in Ramadan for the extra reward, which is fine as long as you do not delay beyond the due date. Paying in advance before the year completes is allowed in the Hanafi school and the majority, and you can give it in instalments over the year, then settle the balance on the due date. Make the intention of zakat when giving; you need not tell the recipient it is zakat.

Hajj & Umrah

When does Hajj become obligatory on a person?

Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime on every adult, sane, free Muslim who has the means: enough money for travel, stay and return beyond basic needs and the needs of their dependants, physical ability, and a safe route. For a woman, the Hanafi school additionally requires a mahram (husband or close male relative) for the journey. Once these conditions are met, it should not be delayed without reason.

What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?

Hajj is performed only on fixed days (8th–13th Dhul Hijjah) and includes staying at Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah, stoning the Jamarat and sacrifice; it is a pillar of Islam for those who can afford it. Umrah can be performed any time of year and is much shorter: ihram, tawaf of the Ka'bah, sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and shaving or trimming the hair. In the Hanafi school Umrah is a sunnah mu'akkadah, while Shafi'is and Hanbalis consider it obligatory once in a lifetime.

What are the essential parts (fara'id) of Hajj?

In the Hanafi school Hajj has three fard acts: entering ihram with intention, standing at Arafah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah (between noon and the dawn of the 10th), and Tawaf al-Ziyarah (Tawaf al-Ifadah). The other schools also count sa'i between Safa and Marwah as a pillar (Hanafis consider it wajib). Missing Arafah means the Hajj is missed — the Prophet ﷺ said "Hajj is Arafah." Missing a wajib act (such as staying at Muzdalifah or stoning) is compensated by a sacrifice (dam).

What are Tamattu', Qiran and Ifrad?

Ifrad is Hajj alone, without Umrah. Tamattu' is performing Umrah in the Hajj months, coming out of ihram, and then entering ihram again for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. Qiran is entering ihram for both Umrah and Hajj together and staying in ihram until the Hajj is complete. Tamattu' and Qiran require a sacrifice (hady); most pilgrims from Pakistan perform Tamattu' because it is easier. In the Hanafi school Qiran is the most virtuous, followed by Tamattu'.

What is forbidden in the state of ihram?

In ihram a pilgrim must avoid: perfume, cutting hair or nails, marital relations and anything leading to them, hunting, arguing and sinful talk. Men must not wear stitched clothes shaped to the body (such as shirts, trousers, socks) or cover their head, and wear two white sheets instead; women wear their normal modest clothes but must not cover their face with something touching it or wear gloves. Breaking these rules by mistake or need requires a compensation (sadaqah, fasting or sacrifice) depending on the act, so ask your group's scholar.

Can a woman go for Hajj or Umrah without a mahram?

The Prophet ﷺ said a woman should not travel (the distance of a journey) except with a mahram. On this basis, the Hanafi and Hanbali schools require a mahram for a woman's Hajj and Umrah travel. The Shafi'i and Maliki schools allow a woman to perform her obligatory Hajj with a trustworthy group of women when safety is assured. Saudi rules have also changed in recent years, but for the religious ruling, Hanafi women should follow the requirement of a mahram or consult a mufti about their specific situation.

Can I perform Hajj on behalf of my deceased or sick parent (Hajj-e-Badal)?

Yes. A woman from Khath'am asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she could perform Hajj for her elderly father who could not sit on a mount, and he said yes. Hajj-e-Badal is valid for someone who has died, or who is permanently unable to travel. The person performing it should already have done their own obligatory Hajj, according to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools; in the Hanafi school it is valid otherwise but disliked, so it is best to complete your own first.

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet ﷺ said an Umrah in Ramadan is equal in reward to Hajj (in one narration, "a Hajj with me"). Scholars explain it equals Hajj in reward, but it does not replace the obligatory Hajj for someone on whom Hajj is fard. He ﷺ also said one Umrah to the next is an expiation for the sins between them.

Is Qurbani (sacrifice at Eid al-Adha) obligatory?

In the Hanafi school Qurbani is wajib on every adult, sane, resident Muslim who owns nisab-level wealth beyond basic needs on the days of Eid al-Adha (10th–12th Dhul Hijjah); the majority of scholars consider it a strongly emphasised sunnah. One goat or sheep counts for one person, and a cow or camel can be shared by up to seven. It is done after the Eid prayer; the meat is commonly divided into three parts — for the family, relatives and friends, and the poor. Allah says it is not the meat or blood that reaches Him, but your taqwa.

Is visiting Madinah part of Hajj?

No, visiting Madinah is not a part of Hajj or Umrah, and the Hajj is complete without it. But it is a great blessing to travel to pray in Masjid an-Nabawi, one of the three mosques the Prophet ﷺ encouraged travelling to, and then to send salam upon him ﷺ and his two companions with respect. Pilgrims from Pakistan usually spend some days in Madinah before or after Hajj.

What are the steps of Umrah?

1) Before crossing the miqat (for Pakistanis flying in, usually Qarn al-Manazil or Yalamlam, announced on the plane), take a bath, wear ihram, pray two rak'at and make the intention, then recite the talbiyah. 2) In Masjid al-Haram, perform tawaf: seven rounds around the Ka'bah starting from the Black Stone, then pray two rak'at. 3) Perform sa'i: seven trips between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa. 4) Men shave or trim their hair, women cut a fingertip's length — and the Umrah is complete. HolyWayz has a step-by-step Umrah guide with duas.

What food is haram for Muslims?

The Quran forbids pork, carrion (animals that died without slaughter), blood that has flowed out, and meat slaughtered in a name other than Allah's; all intoxicants such as alcohol are also forbidden. In the Hanafi school, predatory animals and birds with claws are haram, and of sea creatures only fish is halal (prawns are disputed among Hanafis, while the majority of schools allow all seafood). When buying packaged foods, look for a reliable halal certification and be careful with gelatin and certain additives.

What are the sunnah etiquettes of eating?

Wash your hands, say "Bismillah" before eating, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you, as the Prophet ﷺ taught a young boy. If you forget Bismillah at the start, say "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu." Do not find fault with food, avoid wasting it, and fill no more than a third of your stomach with food. Finish by praising Allah: "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana muslimin."

Is bank interest (sood) haram? What about savings accounts?

Riba (interest) is clearly forbidden in the Quran, and the Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who takes it, the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two witnesses. Conventional interest on savings accounts and loans falls under this according to the vast majority of scholars. Prefer a current account or an Islamic bank account approved by a reliable Shariah board; if you have already received interest, give it away to the poor without the intention of reward. For mortgages, insurance and specific products, consult a qualified Islamic finance scholar.

What are the rights of parents in Islam?

Allah places kindness to parents right after His own worship: do not even say "uff" to them, speak to them gently, and pray "Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira." When asked who deserves the best companionship, the Prophet ﷺ said "your mother" three times, then "your father." Obey them in everything good, serve them, especially in old age, and keep praying for them after they pass away. You must not obey anyone, including parents, in disobeying Allah, but even then remain respectful.

What is the sunnah way of greeting with salam?

The Prophet ﷺ said spreading salam among yourselves creates love, which leads to faith and Paradise.

How do I pray Salat al-Istikhara before an important decision?

When you are deciding something permissible — a job, marriage proposal, business or move — pray two rak'at of nafl (not at a forbidden time), then recite the istikhara dua the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions, naming your matter where indicated. You do not need to see a dream; afterwards, go ahead with what your heart inclines to and Allah makes easy, and accept the outcome. Also consult wise, trustworthy people — istikhara and advice go together.

What is the virtue of sending durood on the Prophet ﷺ?

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and He commands believers to do the same. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever sends one salawat upon him, Allah sends ten upon that person. The best form is Durood-e-Ibrahimi, recited in every prayer, and it is especially recommended on Fridays and whenever his name is mentioned. Shorter forms like "Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam" are also good.

What counts as backbiting (gheebat), and how do I avoid it?

The Prophet ﷺ defined gheebat as mentioning your brother in a way he would dislike; if what you say is true, it is backbiting, and if it is false, it is slander (buhtan), which is worse. The Quran compares it to eating the flesh of your dead brother. Avoid it by changing the subject, defending the absent person, and speaking well or staying silent. If you have backbitten someone, repent and pray for them; if it caused harm, seek their forgiveness if doing so won't cause more harm.

What should I look for when choosing a spouse?

The Prophet ﷺ said a woman is married for four things — wealth, lineage, beauty and religion — and advised choosing the one with religion. The same applies to choosing a husband: good character and deen come first. Islam encourages making marriage easy, avoiding extravagant dowry (jahez) demands and wasteful customs, and the consent of both bride and groom is essential. Pray istikhara and consult family before deciding.

What are the sunnahs when a baby is born (aqiqah)?

It is customary to say the adhan softly in the baby's right ear, and to do tahneek (softening a date and rubbing it on the baby's palate). On the seventh day it is sunnah to give the baby a good name, shave the head and give silver equal to the hair's weight in charity, and do aqiqah: two goats for a boy and one for a girl (a share in a cow also suffices in the Hanafi school). In the Hanafi school aqiqah is mustahab (recommended); for some others it is a strongly emphasised sunnah.

What should we do when someone dies, and how is the funeral prayer offered?

On hearing of a death, say "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." The deceased should be washed (ghusl), shrouded and buried quickly; the funeral prayer is fard kifayah (if some do it, the rest are relieved). It is prayed standing, without ruku or sajdah, with four takbirs: after the first, Thana; after the second, Durood-e-Ibrahimi; after the third, the dua for the deceased; after the fourth, salam (Hanafi method). The Prophet ﷺ said whoever attends a funeral until the prayer gets a qirat of reward, and until burial two qirats, each like a mountain.

How do I change the app language?

Open Settings › Language and choose from 11 languages: English, Urdu, Arabic, French, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Pashto, Dutch, Japanese and Malay. The app's menus and text switch immediately to the language you pick.

The adhan notification comes late or doesn't play. How do I fix it?

Android sometimes delays or blocks alarms to save battery. On the Prayer tab, open "Make adhan arrive on time" and follow the steps: allow "Alarms & reminders", set HolyWayz's battery usage to "Unrestricted", and make sure notifications are turned on for the app. On Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and similar phones, also enable "Autostart" for HolyWayz in the phone's settings, otherwise the system may stop the adhan.

Prayer times in the app don't match my local mosque. What should I check?

First check your location is correct (Location screen, or turn on Auto-detect location). Then open Prayer settings and choose the right calculation method for your country (for Pakistan, usually University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi) and set the Asr method to Hanafi or Standard (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) as your mosque follows. If a time is still a few minutes off, use Manual adjustments (minutes) for that prayer. Remember that many mosques also set their jama'at times later than the start time.

Will prayer times update automatically when I travel?

Yes, if Auto-detect location is turned on in the Location screen and you have allowed location permission, HolyWayz updates your city and prayer times when you move. If you prefer, you can turn it off and search for or set a city manually — useful when location services are off or you want times for another place.

The Qibla compass seems wrong. How can I make it accurate?

Phone compasses need calibration: move your phone slowly in a figure-8 motion a few times until the reading settles. Hold the phone flat, and keep it away from metal objects, magnets, cars, speakers and electrical appliances, which disturb the sensor. Make sure your location is correct, since the Qibla direction is calculated from it.

Can I read the Quran in the Indo-Pak script instead of Uthmani?

Yes. Turn on "Indo-Pak script" in Settings (or from the Aa button in the Quran reader) to see the familiar South-Asian style with its markings; turn it off for the Uthmani/Madani script used in the Arab world. Both are the same Quran — only the writing style and symbols differ.

How do I change the translation, tafseer or reciter?

In the Quran reader, tap the Aa button to choose the translation, tafseer or reciter; the same options are also in Settings. Some extra translations and tafseers are downloaded once (about 1–2 MB each) and then work offline.

Does HolyWayz work without internet?

Yes. The Quran text, duas, guides and prayer times work fully offline. Hadith collections, tafseer and extra translations are downloaded once and then also work offline. Internet is only needed for those one-time downloads, books you open for the first time, and sending feedback.

How do I back up my bookmarks and move them to a new phone?

Go to Settings › Backup & restore and tap "Back up" to save your bookmarks, notes, favourite duas and tasbeeh counts to a file (holywayz-backup.json). Keep that file safe, for example in Google Drive or by sending it to yourself. On your new phone, install HolyWayz, open Settings › Backup & restore, tap "Restore" and choose the file.

How does the Salah Tracker work?

In the Salah Tracker, mark each prayer as you pray it to build a daily record and see your consistency. The qaza counter lets you enter how many prayers you owe for each salah and count them down as you make them up. Your tracker data stays on your phone.

I found a mistake in the app. How do I report it?

Please use the "Suggest a correction" form (in Settings, and on content screens), describe the mistake and where you saw it, and send it — it goes to suggestions@holywayz.com. We review every report, and corrections in Quran, hadith and Islamic content are checked carefully before updating. Jazakallahu khairan for helping improve HolyWayz.

Is HolyWayz free? Does it show ads or collect my data?

HolyWayz is completely free, with no ads and no account or sign-up needed. Your bookmarks, settings, tracker and other data stay on your phone. The only thing that leaves your device is what you choose to send through the feedback form.

Is there a HolyWayz website?

Yes — holywayz.com has the same content as the app: Quran with translations, hadith, duas, guides, prayer times and more, so you can read it on a computer or share links with family and friends.
