مـWaqf Lazim (compulsory stop)وقف لازم
وقف لازم
Stop here. Do not join this phrase to the next one.یہاں ضرور ٹھہریں، اس عبارت کو اگلی عبارت سے نہ ملائیں۔
The small meem marks a place where the sentence is complete and joining it to what follows would give a wrong or even opposite meaning. If you continue without stopping, the next words may appear to belong to the same statement, changing its sense. It is the strongest stop sign in the mushaf, so recite the phrase, stop, take a breath, and begin the next phrase afresh.
«Only those who listen will respond ۘ» — then «and the dead, Allah will raise them». Stopping at 'yasma'un' separates the two statements. Reading straight on could suggest 'those who listen and the dead' respond together, which is the opposite of the intended meaning.
«صرف وہی لوگ قبول کرتے ہیں جو سنتے ہیں ۘ» پھر «اور مُردوں کو اللہ اٹھائے گا»۔ «یسمعون» پر رکنے سے دونوں جملے الگ ہو جاتے ہیں۔ ملا کر پڑھنے سے یہ گمان ہو سکتا ہے کہ سننے والے اور مُردے دونوں قبول کرتے ہیں، جو مقصود کے بالکل خلاف ہے۔
لاLa (do not stop)لا (یہاں نہ رکیں)
لا وقف
Do not stop here; if you must stop for breath, go back and resume from a suitable earlier word.یہاں نہ رکیں؛ اگر سانس کے لیے رکنا پڑے تو پیچھے سے مناسب لفظ سے دوبارہ پڑھیں۔
The sign 'la' means 'no' — the words before and after it are tied together in meaning or grammar, so pausing here would leave the sentence incomplete or misleading. It usually appears where a sentence is still running on. If you run out of breath, it is not sinful to stop, but you should return a word or two and read the phrase again so that the meaning is joined. In the Indo-Pak mushaf 'la' is sometimes printed at the end of an ayah; the Madinah (Arabic) convention is that stopping at an ayah end remains allowed even then, since the Prophet ﷺ paused at the ends of ayat.
«This Qur'an guides to that which is most upright ۙ and gives glad tidings to the believers…». The 'la' after 'aqwam' shows that the glad tidings are part of the same description of the Qur'an; stopping there would cut the sentence in half.
«یہ قرآن اس راستے کی ہدایت دیتا ہے جو سب سے سیدھا ہے ۙ اور مومنوں کو خوشخبری دیتا ہے…»۔ «اقوم» کے بعد «لا» بتاتی ہے کہ خوشخبری دینا قرآن کی اسی صفت کا حصہ ہے؛ وہاں رکنے سے جملہ آدھا رہ جائے گا۔
جWaqf Jaiz (permissible stop)وقف جائز
وقف جائز
You may stop or continue; both are equally acceptable.رکنا اور ملانا دونوں برابر جائز ہیں۔
The letter jeem stands for 'ja'iz' (permitted). The phrase before it is complete enough to stand alone, yet it is also connected to what follows, so neither stopping nor continuing harms the meaning. Many teachers advise beginners to stop at jeem, because it gives a natural breathing point and keeps the recitation clear. In the Madinah mushaf the same sign is used, and it is by far the most common stop mark in the Qur'an.
«Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you ۚ but if you return, We shall return». The jeem after 'yarhamakum' lets you pause after the promise of mercy or carry on into the warning — the meaning is safe either way. Note that the same ayah later has a waqf lazim (ۘ) after 'udna', where you must stop.
Stopping is recommended; the sentence is complete here and a fresh one begins.رکنا بہتر ہے؛ یہاں جملہ مکمل ہو جاتا ہے اور نیا جملہ شروع ہوتا ہے۔
The letter ta marks a 'mutlaq' (unrestricted) stop: the preceding words form a complete thought, and what comes next starts a new idea, often a new subject or address. It is not compulsory like meem, but stopping is better than continuing, and no repetition is needed when you resume. This sign is mainly used in the Indo-Pak and Turkish mushafs; the Madinah mushaf usually prints a jeem or a 'qala' (ۗ) in the same places.
«…so that We might show him some of Our signs ۗ Indeed He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.» The account of the Night Journey ends at 'ayatina'; the closing words are a separate declaration about Allah, so a stop here is preferred.
Prefer to continue; you may stop if you need to, without harming the meaning.ملا کر پڑھنا بہتر ہے؛ ضرورت ہو تو رکنا بھی جائز ہے اور معنی خراب نہیں ہوتا۔
'Sila' is short for 'al-wasl awla' — joining is preferable. The two parts are closely linked, so the flow of meaning is best kept together, but the first part is complete enough that a stop does not distort it. Use it as a breathing point only when the sentence is long. In the Madinah mushaf the same meaning is shown by the small 'sala' ligature (ۖ).
«And fulfil the covenant ۖ indeed the covenant will be asked about.» The command and its reason belong together, so read them in one breath; a pause after 'bil-'ahd' is tolerated but less fitting.
«اور عہد پورا کرو ۖ بے شک عہد کے بارے میں پوچھا جائے گا»۔ حکم اور اس کی وجہ ایک ساتھ ہیں، اس لیے ایک سانس میں پڑھیں؛ «بالعہد» کے بعد رکنا برداشت تو ہے مگر کم مناسب ہے۔
قلےAl-waqf awla (stopping is better)الوقف اولیٰ (رکنا بہتر)
الوقف أولى
Stopping is better; continuing is allowed.رکنا بہتر ہے؛ ملانا جائز ہے۔
'Qila' stands for 'al-waqf awla' — the stop is preferable. It is the mirror of 'sila': the first part is complete and the second begins a somewhat new thought, so a pause makes the meaning clearer, yet nothing is lost if you join them. The Madinah mushaf prints this as the small ligature ۗ (qaf-lam-ya); in Indo-Pak copies the same places often carry ط or ج instead, which is why this exact sign is rare in South Asian prints.
In Ayat al-Kursi, after «…who can intercede with Him except by His permission ۗ» the Madinah mushaf marks 'qila': the question is complete, and the next words «He knows what is before them…» begin a new description, so a stop reads best.
آیت الکرسی میں «…کون ہے جو اس کی اجازت کے بغیر اس کے پاس سفارش کرے ۗ» کے بعد مدینہ کے مصحف میں «قلے» ہے: سوال مکمل ہو گیا اور اگلے الفاظ «وہ جانتا ہے جو ان کے آگے ہے…» نئی صفت بیان کرتے ہیں، اس لیے رکنا زیادہ موزوں ہے۔
زWaqf Mujawwaz (allowed, but continuing is better)وقف مجوّز
وقف مجوَّز
Stopping is allowed, but it is better to continue.رکنا جائز ہے مگر ملانا بہتر ہے۔
The letter zay is 'mujawwaz' — a stop that has been judged acceptable, but weaker than jeem. The grammar permits a pause, yet the sense flows on, so continuing keeps the recitation smoother. Treat it as an emergency breathing point rather than a planned stop. It is specific to the Indo-Pak and Ottoman systems of waqf signs.
«…in it is darkness, thunder and lightning ز they put their fingers in their ears…». The description of the storm could end at 'barq', but the people's reaction is part of the same picture, so reading on is better.
«…جس میں اندھیرے، گرج اور بجلی ہے ز وہ اپنی انگلیاں کانوں میں ٹھونس لیتے ہیں…»۔ طوفان کا بیان «برق» پر ختم ہو سکتا ہے مگر لوگوں کا ردِ عمل اسی منظر کا حصہ ہے، اس لیے ملا کر پڑھنا بہتر ہے۔
صWaqf Murakhkhas (licensed stop for breath)وقف مرخّص
وقف مرخَّص
A concession: you may stop here to take breath in a long passage, without needing to repeat.رعایت ہے: لمبی عبارت میں سانس لینے کے لیے یہاں رک سکتے ہیں اور دہرانے کی ضرورت نہیں۔
The letter sad stands for 'murakhkhas' (given licence). It is placed in long sentences where there is no natural stop for a while, so the reciter is allowed to pause for breath even though the words are still connected. Because the phrase before it carries enough meaning, you may continue from the next word without going back. Do not treat it as a stop to aim for — it exists only so that a tired reciter is not forced to break the sentence at a worse place.
In the long ayah «Who made the earth a bed for you and the sky a canopy ص and sent down water from the sky…» the Indo-Pak mushaf allows a breath after 'bina'an' before the blessings continue.
لمبی آیت «جس نے تمہارے لیے زمین کو بچھونا اور آسمان کو چھت بنایا ص اور آسمان سے پانی اتارا…» میں برصغیر کا مصحف نعمتوں کا سلسلہ جاری رہنے سے پہلے «بناءً» کے بعد سانس لینے کی اجازت دیتا ہے۔
ق / قفQeela (a stop has been reported) / Qif (stop)قیل علیہ الوقف / قف
قيل عليه الوقف / قف
ق: some scholars allowed a stop here, but continuing is preferred. قف: a stop is recommended here even if you would not expect one.ق: بعض علماء نے یہاں وقف کی اجازت دی ہے مگر ملانا بہتر ہے۔ قف: یہاں رکنا بہتر ہے اگرچہ بظاہر وقف کی توقع نہ ہو۔
These are two different signs. The single qaf means 'qeela 'alayhi al-waqf' — 'it has been said that one may stop here': the stop is reported from some scholars of waqf but most prefer to continue, so it is a weak stop. The word 'qif' is the command 'stop!': it is written where a reader might rush past a place that is actually a good stop, so pausing there is recommended. Both belong to the Indo-Pak and Ottoman systems; the Madinah mushaf does not use them.
In Indo-Pak prints 'qif' appears in some ayat such as «…then bring a surah like it قف and call your witnesses…», reminding the reader that the challenge is complete before the call to witnesses. A single 'qaf' appears, for instance, in long narrative ayat of Surah Yusuf where a pause is tolerated but not preferred.
سSaktah (brief pause without breath)سکتہ
سكتة
Pause the voice for a moment without taking a breath, then continue.آواز کو ایک لمحے کے لیے روکیں، سانس نہ لیں، پھر آگے پڑھیں۔
Saktah is a short silence (about the length of two counts) made without breathing, after which the recitation continues. It is not a stop: the breath is held, so the words stay joined, but the slight break prevents a wrong meaning or a wrong sound-joining. In the reading of Hafs from 'Asim (used in most of the world) there are exactly four saktahs that must be observed: 18:1 between 'iwaja' and 'qayyiman', so 'crooked' is not understood as 'straight'; 36:52 between 'marqadina' and 'hadha', separating the words of the disbelievers from the reply; 75:27 between 'man' and 'raq', so the two words are not merged into one; and 83:14 between 'bal' and 'rana', for the same reason. Some readers also observe optional saktahs between Surah al-Anfal and at-Tawbah, and in 69:28-29.
«…and has not placed in it any crookedness ۜ (He made it) straight». Without the saktah, 'qayyiman' could sound like it describes the crookedness; the silent pause makes clear it describes the Book.
«…اور اس میں کوئی کجی نہیں رکھی ۜ (اسے) سیدھا (بنایا)»۔ سکتے کے بغیر «قیّماً» کجی کی صفت معلوم ہو سکتا ہے؛ خاموش وقفہ واضح کر دیتا ہے کہ یہ کتاب کی صفت ہے۔
∴ ∴Mu'anaqah (stop at one of the pair, not both)وقفِ معانقہ
وقف المعانقة
Two triple-dot signs close together: stop at either one, but never at both.تین تین نقطوں کی دو علامتیں قریب قریب: کسی ایک پر رکیں، دونوں پر ہرگز نہیں۔
Mu'anaqah ('embracing') marks a phrase that can attach either to the words before it or to the words after it, and both readings are correct. Stopping at the first sign joins the phrase to what follows; stopping at the second joins it to what came before. Stopping at both would leave the middle phrase hanging on its own, so the rule is: one or the other, never both. It is also called 'waqf al-muraqabah' (the watched stop). Continuing through both signs is also allowed.
«That is the Book, there is no doubt ۛ in it ۛ a guidance for the God-fearing». Stop at the first sign: 'no doubt — in it is guidance'. Or stop at the second: 'no doubt in it — a guidance'. Both are sound; stopping at both would isolate 'in it'.
«یہ وہ کتاب ہے جس میں کوئی شک نہیں ۛ اس میں ۛ متقیوں کے لیے ہدایت ہے»۔ پہلی علامت پر رکیں: «کوئی شک نہیں — اس میں ہدایت ہے»۔ یا دوسری پر: «اس میں کوئی شک نہیں — ہدایت ہے»۔ دونوں درست ہیں؛ دونوں پر رکنے سے «فیہ» اکیلا رہ جائے گا۔
۩Sajdah Tilawat (prostration of recitation)سجدۂ تلاوت
سجدة التلاوة
At this sign a prostration is due for the reciter and for whoever listens attentively.اس علامت پر پڑھنے والے اور غور سے سننے والے پر سجدہ واجب ہوتا ہے۔
The sajdah sign (often with a line over the word, and 'sajdah' in the margin) marks an ayah of prostration. After reciting it, say the takbir, prostrate once with the usual conditions of prayer (wudu, facing the Qiblah, covering the body), say 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la' at least three times, and rise with the takbir; no tashahhud or salam is needed. In the Hanafi school it is wajib for the reciter and for anyone who hears the ayah, whether or not they intended to listen; in the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools it is a confirmed sunnah. The 14 places marked in Indo-Pak and Madinah mushafs are: 7:206 (al-A'raf), 13:15 (ar-Ra'd), 16:50 (an-Nahl), 17:109 (al-Isra), 19:58 (Maryam), 22:18 (al-Hajj), 25:60 (al-Furqan), 27:26 (an-Naml), 32:15 (as-Sajdah), 38:24 (Sad), 41:38 (Fussilat; Hanafis prostrate at the end of 41:38, others at 41:37), 53:62 (an-Najm), 84:21 (al-Inshiqaq) and 96:19 (al-'Alaq). Hanafis count these 14 and do not count 22:77 (the second sajdah of al-Hajj). Hanbalis count 15, adding 22:77. Shafi'is also include 22:77 but treat 38:24 as a prostration of thanks outside prayer, giving 14. Malikis count 11, leaving out 22:77 and the three in the short surahs (53:62, 84:21, 96:19). If several sajdahs are missed, they may be made up later; a woman in menstruation does not perform it.

«And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility ۩». After finishing the ayah, the reciter and listeners prostrate once, following the example of those described in the verse.
«اور وہ روتے ہوئے ٹھوڑیوں کے بل گر پڑتے ہیں اور یہ ان کی عاجزی بڑھا دیتا ہے ۩»۔ آیت مکمل کرنے کے بعد پڑھنے والا اور سننے والے ایک سجدہ کرتے ہیں، آیت میں بیان کردہ لوگوں کی پیروی میں۔
عRuku' (section mark)رکوع
ركوع
A section ends here; a good place to stop, and the traditional unit for reading in prayer.یہاں ایک حصہ ختم ہوتا ہے؛ رکنے کی اچھی جگہ اور نماز میں پڑھنے کی روایتی اکائی۔
The letter 'ayn in the margin marks the end of a ruku', a thematic section of the Qur'an. The whole Qur'an is divided into 558 rukus. The division is attributed to scholars of the early centuries and is designed so that a reciter who reads one ruku' in each rak'ah of Tarawih can complete the Qur'an by the 27th night of Ramadan. Each ruku' ends at a complete meaning, so the 'ayn is always a sound place to stop. Next to the 'ayn three small numbers are usually printed: the number of this ruku' within the surah (on top), the number of ayat it contains (in the middle), and the number of the ruku' within the juz' (below). The ruku' system is used in Indo-Pak, Iranian and some Turkish mushafs; the Madinah mushaf does not print it.
The first ruku' of Surah al-Baqarah ends at ayah 7; the margin shows 'ayn with 1 (first ruku' of the surah), 7 (seven ayat) and 1 (first ruku' of the juz').
سورۂ بقرہ کا پہلا رکوع آیت ۷ پر ختم ہوتا ہے؛ حاشیے میں «ع» کے ساتھ ۱ (سورت کا پہلا رکوع)، ۷ (سات آیات) اور ۱ (پارے کا پہلا رکوع) لکھا ہوتا ہے۔
End of ayahآیت کا اختتام
رأس الآية
Stopping at the end of every ayah is the Sunnah, even where the meaning continues into the next ayah.ہر آیت کے آخر پر رکنا سنت ہے، اگرچہ معنی اگلی آیت میں جاری ہو۔
The round mark with the ayah number shows the end of a verse. Umm Salamah described the recitation of the Prophet ﷺ as cut off ayah by ayah: he would say «Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin» and stop, then «Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim» and stop. Because of this, scholars of tajweed consider stopping at ayah ends a sunnah in itself, even when the grammar runs on — this is called 'waqf sunnah' or 'waqf al-ta'rif'. It also helps the listener recognise where each ayah ends. Joining ayat is allowed, and in places where a 'la' is printed at the ayah end some Indo-Pak scholars advise joining, but following the Sunnah of stopping is never wrong. When you stop, apply the rules of stopping (a sukun on the last letter, and so on).
«Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin » — the Prophet ﷺ stopped here before beginning «Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim», although the second ayah describes Allah mentioned in the first.
«الحمد للہ رب العالمین » — نبی ﷺ یہاں رک کر پھر «الرحمٰن الرحیم» شروع فرماتے، حالانکہ دوسری آیت پہلی میں مذکور اللہ ہی کی صفت ہے۔
خ / عFive- and ten-ayah margin marksپانچ اور دس آیتوں کے حاشیائی نشان
التخميس والتعشير
Counting aids only; they do not tell you to stop or continue.صرف گنتی کی مدد کے لیے ہیں؛ رکنے یا ملانے کا حکم نہیں دیتے۔
Older and some modern mushafs mark every fifth ayah with a small 'kha' (for khams, five) and every tenth with an 'ayn (for 'ashr, ten) or a decorated rosette in the margin. These marks, called takhmis and ta'shir, were introduced early for counting and memorising and have no bearing on waqf. Do not confuse the 'ayn of ta'shir with the 'ayn of ruku': the ruku' 'ayn comes with section numbers, while ta'shir only counts. Modern printed mushafs mostly give the ayah number inside the end-of-ayah mark instead, along with juz', hizb and quarter-hizb (rub') marks in the margin, which are likewise reading aids rather than stop signs.
In a mushaf with ta'shir, the tenth ayah of al-Baqarah carries the ten-mark in the margin; it changes nothing about how the ayah is recited.
تعشیر والے مصحف میں سورۂ بقرہ کی دسویں آیت کے حاشیے میں دس کا نشان ہوتا ہے؛ اس سے آیت پڑھنے کے طریقے میں کوئی فرق نہیں آتا۔
Where not to stopکہاں نہ رکیں
The Qur'an is Arabic speech, and stopping in the middle of a tightly bound phrase can leave the meaning incomplete or make it say something false. Scholars of waqf and ibtida' list the following places where a deliberate stop is avoided. Running out of breath is not a sin — but when it happens you must resume correctly.
- Between a mudaf and its mudaf ilaih (a possessive pair). In 1:4 «Maliki yawmid-din» do not stop at 'Maliki' (Master of…) — 'Master' needs 'the Day of Judgement' to be complete.
- Between a verb and its subject or object. In 2:30 «wa idh qala Rabbuka lil-mala'ikah», stopping at 'qala' (He said) leaves the speaker unnamed and the sentence hanging.
- Right after a conjunction such as wa (and), fa (so) or thumma (then). The conjunction promises more words; in 2:3 do not stop after the 'wa' of «wa mimma razaqnahum yunfiqun».
- Between a condition and its answer. In 2:38 «fa man tabi'a hudaya fa la khawfun 'alayhim» the stop after 'hudaya' separates 'whoever follows My guidance' from its promise 'no fear shall be upon them'.
- Between a noun and its adjective, or 'inna' / 'kana' and their predicate. In 2:20 «inna Allaha 'ala kulli shay'in qadir», stopping at 'inna Allaha' states nothing at all.
- Wherever the sign 'la' (ۙ) is printed, and generally in the middle of a word — a word must never be broken by a stop.
- Before 'illa' (except) in a negation. 'La ilaha' on its own means 'there is no god' — the sentence is only true with 'illa Allah'. In 47:19 and 37:35 read «la ilaha illa Allah» in one breath; likewise 2:163 «la ilaha illa Huwa».
- On a word that, left alone, gives a false meaning — such as stopping at «innallaha la yahdi» (Allah does not guide) in 5:51 before «al-qawma az-zalimin» (the wrongdoing people), or at «la taqrabus-salah» (do not approach prayer) in 4:43 before «wa antum sukara» (while you are intoxicated).
- If breath runs out at a bad place, this is 'waqf idtirari' (a stop of necessity). It is excused — but do not start again from the very next word. Go back to a word from which the meaning is complete and read the phrase again.
- The Madinah and Indo-Pak mushafs do not print a sign at every bad stop; where no sign is given, the reciter relies on the sense of the ayah and the ayah ending.

How to resume (ibtida')دوبارہ کیسے شروع کریں (ابتداء)
Ibtida' is the science of where to begin again after a stop. It matters as much as the stop itself: a poor starting point can make the Qur'an appear to say something it never says. The rule of thumb is that a new start must be a complete, true thought on its own.
ابتداء اس علم کا نام ہے کہ وقف کے بعد دوبارہ کہاں سے شروع کیا جائے۔ یہ وقف جتنا ہی اہم ہے: غلط جگہ سے شروع کرنے سے قرآن بظاہر وہ بات کہتا معلوم ہو سکتا ہے جو اس نے کبھی نہیں کہی۔ بنیادی اصول یہ ہے کہ نئی ابتداء بذاتِ خود ایک مکمل اور درست بات ہو۔
- After a good stop (tam or kafi), begin from the very next word — no repetition is needed.
- After a hasan stop (grammatically complete but joined in meaning), go back and repeat from the start of the phrase. In 1:2, if you stopped at «Al-hamdu lillah», resume from «Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin», not from «Rabbil-'alamin» alone.
- After a forced stop at a bad place (waqf idtirari), return to the last word from which the sense is complete. If breath failed at 'Maliki' in 1:4, restart from «Maliki yawmid-din».
- Never begin from a word that leaves out the subject or speaker. In 2:116 «wa qalu ittakhadha Allahu waladan» do not start at 'ittakhadha Allahu waladan' (Allah has taken a son) — those are the words of the disbelievers, and the ayah must be read with 'wa qalu' (and they said).
- Never begin from a word that drops a negation. In 5:64 «wa qalatil-yahudu yadullahi maghlulah» starting at 'yadullahi maghlulah' (the hand of Allah is tied) states the very claim the ayah is condemning.
- Do not begin with a conjunction alone or with 'illa' alone; if you stopped before 'illa' by necessity, go back to the negation so that «la ilaha illa Allah» is read whole.
- When resuming after a saktah or mu'anaqah there is nothing to repeat — those are not stops.
- In prayer and in reviewing memorisation, scholars recommend stopping and starting at ayah ends or at ruku' marks so that both waqf and ibtida' are sound by default.
- If you are unsure, the safe practice is to go back a little further than you think necessary; repeating correct words costs nothing, while starting at the wrong word can spoil the meaning.

The four types of waqfوقف کی چار قسمیں
Classical scholars, following Ibn al-Jazari, grade every possible stopping place by two questions: is the phrase complete in grammar, and is it complete in meaning? The answers give four grades, from the best stop to the one that must be avoided.
قدیم علماء نے ابن الجزری کی پیروی میں ہر ممکنہ وقف کی جگہ کو دو سوالوں سے پرکھا: کیا عبارت گرامر میں مکمل ہے، اور کیا معنی میں مکمل ہے؟ ان کے جوابوں سے چار درجے بنتے ہیں، بہترین وقف سے لے کر اس تک جس سے بچنا ضروری ہے۔
- Waqf Tam (complete): the phrase is complete in both grammar and meaning, and what follows is not linked to it. Stop here and begin from the next word. Example: the end of 2:5 «wa ula'ika humul-muflihun» before the new subject «innal-ladhina kafaru» in 2:6. Most surah endings and story endings are tam.
- Waqf Kafi (sufficient): grammatically complete, but linked to what follows in meaning. Stop here and continue from the next word without repeating. Example: 2:6 «…am lam tundhirhum la yu'minun» — the sentence is complete, yet 2:7 explains why they do not believe.
- Waqf Hasan (good): a complete sentence, but what follows is attached to it in grammar as an adjective, relative clause or the like. You may stop, but you should resume from the beginning of the phrase. Example: 1:2 «Al-hamdu lillah» is a complete sentence, while «Rabbil-'alamin» describes Allah, so after stopping go back to «Al-hamdu lillah». At an ayah end, a hasan stop is still a sunnah stop.
- Waqf Qabih (ugly): the phrase is incomplete, or its meaning on its own is wrong. Do not stop deliberately. Examples: 1:4 at 'Maliki'; 5:51 at «innallaha la yahdi» (Allah does not guide); 2:8 at «wa minan-nasi man yaqulu amanna billahi wal-yawmil-akhir» before «wa ma hum bi-mu'minin» (and they are not believers).
- A stop is only sinful if the reciter intends the distorted meaning; forced stops from breath, sneezing or forgetting are excused, provided one resumes correctly.
- The printed signs are a practical summary of this grading: meem and ta mark tam and kafi stops, jeem usually a kafi stop, sila a hasan stop, and 'la' a qabih stop.
- Scholars sometimes differ on the grade of a particular place, which is why the Madinah and Indo-Pak mushafs occasionally show different signs for the same ayah; both are based on recognised works of waqf.

Breath and paceسانس اور رفتار
Allah commands: «and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation (tarteel)» (73:4). 'Ali (RA) explained tarteel as 'giving the letters their due and knowing the stops'. Good breathing is what makes both possible.
اللہ کا حکم ہے: «اور قرآن کو ٹھہر ٹھہر کر (ترتیل سے) پڑھو» (۷۳:۴)۔ حضرت علیؓ نے ترتیل کی وضاحت یوں کی: «حروف کا حق ادا کرنا اور وقف کی جگہوں کو جاننا»۔ درست سانس ہی ان دونوں کو ممکن بناتی ہے۔
- Tarteel means an unhurried, clear recitation in which every letter is pronounced from its correct place and every rule is given its time. The Prophet ﷺ recited slowly and distinctly, so that a listener could count the letters if he wished.
- Scholars describe three permitted speeds: tahqiq (slow, for learning), tadwir (moderate) and hadr (fast but still correct). All three must keep the rules of tajweed; speed that swallows letters or shortens the madd is not recitation.
- Breathe only at a waqf. Taking breath in the middle of a phrase — even silently — breaks the sentence; this is why the saktah is done without breath.
- Plan your breath for the length of the ayah. Before a long ayah, take a full breath; where the mushaf prints sad (murakhkhas) or jeem, use that as your breathing point rather than stopping at a worse place later.
- Tanaffus (taking a breath) at a word that ends with a madd 'arid should be done after the madd is complete, not during it; the length of the madd (2, 4 or 6 counts) is chosen before you stop and kept consistent through the recitation.
- Do not read so fast that ayat run together without stops; the Prophet ﷺ paused at the ends of ayat, and the Companions disliked 'hadhdh' — rushing through poetry-style.
- Pause to reflect. Hudhayfah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ, when he passed an ayah of mercy, would ask for mercy, and at an ayah of punishment would seek refuge — the stops are also moments of thought.
- A calm, even voice carries the meaning better than loud or dramatic delivery; beautify the voice within the limits of tajweed, as the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Beautify the Qur'an with your voices.'
- Beginners should read with a teacher: the correct lengths of stops, saktahs and madd are learnt by listening and repeating, not from text alone.

Tajweed reminders at the stopوقف کے وقت تجوید کی یاد دہانیاں
Waqf is part of tajweed, and the way a word is pronounced changes when you stop on it. These are the rules a reciter applies most often, with the changes that happen at a stop.
وقف تجوید ہی کا حصہ ہے، اور کسی لفظ پر رکنے سے اس کا تلفظ بدل جاتا ہے۔ یہ وہ قواعد ہیں جو قاری سب سے زیادہ استعمال کرتا ہے، ان تبدیلیوں کے ساتھ جو وقف پر ہوتی ہیں۔
- Madd (lengthening): natural madd (madd tabi'i) is 2 counts. Madd muttasil (hamzah in the same word) is 4-5 counts; madd munfasil (hamzah in the next word) 2-5 counts, kept consistent. Madd lazim (a permanent sukun or shaddah after the madd letter, as in «ad-dallin» and the opening letters of surahs) is 6 counts.
- Madd 'arid lis-sukun: when you stop on a word whose last letter follows a madd letter — «al-'alamin», «ar-Rahim», «nasta'in» — the madd may be stretched to 2, 4 or 6 counts because of the stop; when you continue, it is only 2. Madd lin (waw or ya with sukun after a fathah, as in «bayt», «khawf») is treated the same at a stop.
- Ghunnah (nasal sound) of 2 counts is compulsory on every noon and meem with shaddah («inna», «thumma»), and in idgham with ghunnah, iqlab and ikhfa.
- Noon sakinah and tanween: izhar (clear noon) before the throat letters ء ه ع ح غ خ; idgham (merging) into ي ر م ل و ن — with ghunnah for ي ن م و, without for ل ر; iqlab (noon becomes a hidden meem) before ب; ikhfa (hidden noon with ghunnah) before the remaining fifteen letters.
- Meem sakinah: ikhfa shafawi before ب, idgham shafawi before another م, izhar shafawi before all other letters, taking care not to add ghunnah before ف and و.
- Qalqalah (echo) on ق ط ب ج د when they carry sukun. It is light in the middle of a word («yaj'alun»), stronger when stopping on the letter («ahad», «muhit»), and strongest when the stopped letter has a shaddah («al-haqq», «tabb»).
- Heavy letters (tafkhim): خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ are always pronounced with a full mouth; ra is heavy with fathah or dammah and light with kasrah; lam is heavy only in the name of Allah after a fathah or dammah («qalallah», «rasulullah»). Alif follows the letter before it.
- What changes when you stop on a word: the last vowel is dropped and the letter is read with sukun («ar-Rahimi» becomes «ar-Rahim»); a tanween with fathah becomes a plain alif («'aliman» becomes «'alima», «ahadan» becomes «ahada»); other tanween is simply dropped («'alimun» becomes «'alim»); a ta marbutah is read as ha («rahmatan» becomes «rahmah», «al-jannata» becomes «al-jannah»).
- A few words have special stops in the Hafs reading: the alif of «ana» is pronounced only at a stop; words written with a small alif or ya (like «as-sabil» in 33:67 with an extra alif at the stop) follow the printed sign; in 18:38 «lakinna» is read with the alif at a stop. Learn these individually from a teacher.
- Rawm and ishmam (indicating the dropped vowel with a faint sound or a lip shape) are advanced options at some stops; beginners should stop with a clean sukun.
