The Farewell Sermon

Arafat, 9 Dhul-Hijjah 10 AH

The Farewell Sermon (Khutbat al-Wada') is the address the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ delivered during his only Hajj, the Farewell Pilgrimage, on Friday 9 Dhul-Hijjah 10 AH (March 632 CE). He spoke from the back of his camel, al-Qaswa, in the valley of Uranah at Arafat, and Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf repeated his words aloud so the crowd could hear. The pilgrims gathered with him that year are usually estimated at more than one hundred thousand, the largest assembly of Muslims in his lifetime. He repeated parts of the message on the Day of Sacrifice (10 Dhul-Hijjah) at Mina and again during the Days of Tashriq.

The sermon matters because it is the Prophet's ﷺ final public summary of his mission. He told the people he might never meet them again at that place, and roughly three months later he passed away. In a few short passages he declared the sanctity of human life, property and honour; abolished the blood feuds and usury of the pre-Islamic era, beginning with his own family; set out the mutual rights of husbands and wives; left the Book of Allah as the community's guide; and announced that no Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor a white over a black, except by God-consciousness. Many Muslims and non-Muslim scholars regard it as one of the earliest charters of human rights, and it was at Arafat that day that the verse "This day I have perfected your religion for you" (al-Ma'idah 5:3) was revealed.

How has the sermon reached us? The fullest single report is the hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah describing the whole Hajj, recorded in Sahih Muslim (1218). Other parts are preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari (the narrations of Abu Bakrah, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar and Jarir), Jami' at-Tirmidhi (3087, from Amr ibn al-Ahwas), Sunan Ibn Majah (3055), Musnad Ahmad (23489, the passage on equality between Arab and non-Arab) and the Sirah of Ibn Ishaq as edited by Ibn Hisham. Each companion recorded what he heard and remembered, so the reports differ in wording and in which sentences they include.

The long text that circulates today as "the Farewell Sermon" is therefore a compilation: scholars and authors have gathered the authentic sentences from these different narrations and arranged them as one continuous address. No single companion reported the full text in exactly that form. In this app each passage is given with its own source, and where a passage comes from a narration graded hasan or weaker, or from the Sirah literature rather than the hadith collections, this is stated in the reference line so that the reader knows the strength of every sentence.

Opening praise

He praised Allah and extolled Him, gave reminder and exhortation, then said: "Which day is most sacred? Which day is most sacred? Which day is most sacred?" The people said: "The day of the Greater Hajj, O Messenger of Allah."

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3087 and Sunan Ibn Majah 3055 (Amr ibn al-Ahwas) — graded hasan sahih by at-Tirmidhi. The narrator reports that the Prophet ﷺ opened with praise of Allah; the exact words of the opening praise are not preserved. The 'Khutbat al-Hajah' (al-hamdu lillahi nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu...) placed at the start of popular compilations is his general sermon opening (Abu Dawud 2118, Tirmidhi 1105), not a text transmitted specifically for this sermon.

A final address

O people, listen to my words, for I do not know whether I shall ever meet you again at this place after this year of mine.

Ibn Hisham, as-Sirah an-Nabawiyyah (from Ibn Ishaq) — Sirah report with a mursal chain, not in the Sahih collections. Its meaning is supported by the sahih hadith 'Take your rites from me, for perhaps I shall not perform Hajj after this Hajj of mine' (Sahih Muslim 1297, Jabir).

Sanctity of life, property and honour

Indeed your blood and your property are sacred to one another, like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. — In the narration of Abu Bakrah: Indeed your blood, your property and your honour are sacred to one another, like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours.

Sahih Muslim 1218 (Jabir ibn Abdullah, at Arafat); Sahih al-Bukhari 67 and 1741 (Abu Bakrah, Day of Sacrifice at Mina); Sahih al-Bukhari 1739 (Ibn Abbas). All sahih.

Trusts and personal responsibility

Whoever holds a trust, let him return it to the one who entrusted it to him. — In the hadith of Amr ibn al-Ahwas: No wrongdoer commits a crime except against himself; no father is answerable for the crime of his son, nor a son for the crime of his father.

First sentence: Ibn Hisham, as-Sirah an-Nabawiyyah (Sirah report, mursal); its ruling is established in Sunan Abi Dawud 3535 and Tirmidhi 1264 ('Return the trust to the one who entrusted you', hasan sahih). Second part: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3087 and Sunan Ibn Majah 3055 (Amr ibn al-Ahwas), hasan sahih.

Abolition of blood feuds and usury

Behold, everything of the affair of the Days of Ignorance is placed under my two feet and abolished. The blood-claims of the Days of Ignorance are abolished, and the first blood-claim of ours that I abolish is that of the son of Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, who was being nursed among Banu Sa'd when Hudhayl killed him. The usury of the Days of Ignorance is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our own usury, the usury of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib: all of it is abolished.

Sahih Muslim 1218 (Jabir ibn Abdullah), sahih. Also Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3087 and Sunan Abi Dawud 3334 (hasan sahih). The slain child is named Iyas (or Adam/Tammam) ibn Rabi'ah; Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith was the Prophet's cousin and Abbas his uncle, so he began the reform with his own family.

Satan despairs of being worshipped

Behold, Satan has despaired of ever being worshipped in this land of yours; but he will be obeyed in those deeds of yours that you consider insignificant, and with that he will be content.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2159 and 3087; Sunan Ibn Majah 3055 (Amr ibn al-Ahwas) — graded hasan sahih by at-Tirmidhi.

The calendar and the sacred months

Time has completed its cycle and returned to the form it had on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three in succession, Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and the Rajab of Mudar, which lies between Jumada and Sha'ban.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3197 and 4406; Sahih Muslim 1679 (Abu Bakrah, Day of Sacrifice). Sahih. This ended the pre-Islamic practice of nasi' (postponing sacred months), condemned in Surah at-Tawbah 9:36-37.

Rights of women and their rights over menعورتوں کے حقوق اور مردوں پر ان کے حقوق

Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them under the trust of Allah and intimacy with them has been made lawful to you by the word of Allah. Your right over them is that they do not allow anyone you dislike to sit on your bedding; if they do so, you may discipline them lightly, without causing harm. And their right over you is their provision and their clothing, in kindness.

Sahih Muslim 1218 (Jabir ibn Abdullah), sahih.

Kindness to women and mutual rights

Behold, accept my counsel to treat women well, for they are like partners in your care; you have no right over them beyond that, unless they commit a clear indecency... Behold, you have rights over your wives, and your wives have rights over you.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1163 and 3087; Sunan Ibn Majah 1851 and 3055 (Amr ibn al-Ahwas) — graded hasan sahih by at-Tirmidhi. 'Awan' literally means captives or dependants and is explained by the scholars as wives who are under the husband's care and protection.

Holding to the Book of Allah

I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after it: the Book of Allah. — In the report of Malik: I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet.

First wording: Sahih Muslim 1218 (Jabir ibn Abdullah), sahih — mentions only the Book of Allah. Second wording: Muwatta Malik, Kitab al-Qadar (1594/1661), a balagh (mursal report without full chain); it is also narrated with a connected chain in al-Hakim's Mustadrak 319 and graded hasan by al-Albani for its supporting routes. A separate sahih narration from Ghadir Khumm (Sahih Muslim 2408, Zayd ibn Arqam) has 'the Book of Allah and my household (ahl al-bayt)'.

Equality and brotherhood

O people! Behold, your Lord is One and your father is one. Behold, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a white person over a black, nor a black over a white, except by taqwa (God-consciousness). Have I conveyed the message? They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has conveyed it.

Musnad Ahmad 23489 (Abu Nadrah, from a companion who heard the Prophet ﷺ during the Days of Tashriq at Mina). Chain graded sahih by Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut (the unnamed companion does not weaken it) and by al-Albani (as-Silsilah as-Sahihah 2700); also in al-Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman. Note that this passage was delivered at Mina during the Days of Tashriq, not in the Arafat address itself.

Warning against fighting one anotherآپس میں لڑنے سے تنبیہ

Do not revert after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks.

Sahih al-Bukhari 121, 4405 and 7080; Sahih Muslim 65 (Jarir ibn Abdullah, Farewell Pilgrimage). Also Bukhari 1739 (Ibn Abbas) and 6166 (Ibn Umar). Sahih.

Obedience to lawful leadership

Listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave whose head is like a raisin is appointed over you. — In the hadith of Umm al-Husayn: Even if a slave is appointed over you who leads you by the Book of Allah, listen to him and obey.

Sahih al-Bukhari 7142 (Anas ibn Malik), sahih; the Bukhari narration does not itself state the occasion. Umm al-Husayn's narration in Sahih Muslim 1838 (also Tirmidhi 1706, Ibn Majah 2861) explicitly places this teaching in the Farewell Pilgrimage sermon.

Conveying the message

Behold, let those who are present convey to those who are absent, for perhaps the one present will convey it to someone who understands it better than he does. — In another narration: Let those present convey to those absent, for many a person to whom it is conveyed understands it better than the one who heard it.

Sahih al-Bukhari 67, 105 and 1741; Sahih Muslim 1679 (Abu Bakrah, Day of Sacrifice). Sahih.

The witness

"And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled and given sincere counsel." Then, raising his forefinger to the sky and pointing it down at the people, he said: "O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!" three times. — In the narration of Ibn Abbas: "O Allah, have I not conveyed? O Allah, have I not conveyed?"

Sahih Muslim 1218 (Jabir ibn Abdullah); Sahih al-Bukhari 1739 (Ibn Abbas) and 67 (Abu Bakrah: 'Have I conveyed?'). Sahih.

Revelation of the perfection of the religion

"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion." (5:3) — Umar said: We know that day and the place where it was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: he was standing at Arafat on a Friday.

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:3; Sahih al-Bukhari 45 and 4407; Sahih Muslim 3017 (Umar ibn al-Khattab, in reply to a Jewish man). Sahih.
