The Shahadah is the testimony that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger. It is the first pillar of Islam, the key to Paradise and the words by which a person enters Islam. This guide explains the Kalima, its meaning, its seven conditions, how to accept Islam and its virtues.
The Kalima Tayyibah ('the pure word') is the shortest statement of Islam's belief. Every Muslim should know it by heart, understand it and say it often.
Meaning: There is no god (worthy of worship) except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Both halves are words of the Qur'an (47:19 and 48:29) and of many hadiths; joined together they are taught in Pakistan as the first of the 'Six Kalimas'.
In the Shahadah you bear witness — declare with your tongue what your heart believes. This is the wording recited in the dua after wudu and taught as the second Kalima.
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
A shorter authentic form is 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah'. The same testimony is part of the Tashahhud in every Salah.
Sahih Muslim 234; Sahih al-Bukhari 831

Meaning of 'La ilaha illallah'«
The Kalima has two parts: a negation and an affirmation. 'La ilaha' rejects every false god, idol, grave, person or desire that is worshipped, obeyed or called upon as only God should be. 'Illallah' affirms that all worship — prayer, dua, sacrifice, vows, fear, hope and reliance — belongs to Allah alone. Allah Himself, the angels and the people of knowledge bear this witness.
Shahidallahu annahu la ilaha illa huwa wal-mala'ikatu wa ulul-'ilmi qa'iman bil-qist. La ilaha illa huwal-'Azizul-Hakim.
Meaning: Allah bears witness that there is no god except Him, and so do the angels and those of knowledge, maintaining justice. There is no god except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Qur'an 3:18; Qur'an 2:256

Meaning of 'Muhammadur Rasulullah'«
Testifying that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah's servant and Messenger means: believing everything he told us, obeying what he commanded, avoiding what he forbade, and worshipping Allah only in the way he taught. He is a servant ('abd) — not divine — and a Messenger (rasul), the last of all Prophets; no prophet will come after him.
Ma kana Muhammadun aba ahadin min rijalikum wa lakin Rasulallahi wa Khataman-Nabiyyin.
Meaning: Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.
Belief in the finality of Prophethood (Khatm-e-Nubuwwat) is an essential part of this testimony.
Qur'an 33:40; Qur'an 4:80; Qur'an 3:31

Conditions 1–3: Knowledge, Certainty, Acceptance
Scholars have gathered from the Qur'an and Sunnah seven conditions for 'La ilaha illallah' to benefit a person:
1. Knowledge ('ilm): knowing what it negates and affirms, not saying it without understanding.
2. Certainty (yaqin): believing it firmly, without doubt.
3. Acceptance (qabul): accepting everything it requires with the heart and tongue, not rejecting any of it out of pride.
Fa'lam annahu la ilaha illallah.
Meaning: So know that there is no god except Allah.
Certainty: 'The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and then do not doubt' (49:15). Acceptance: the disbelievers 'were arrogant when told: there is no god but Allah' (37:35).
Qur'an 47:19; Qur'an 49:15; Qur'an 37:35; Sahih Muslim 26

Conditions 4–7: Submission, Truthfulness, Sincerity, Love
4. Submission (inqiyad): acting upon it — obeying Allah's commands and leaving what He forbade.
5. Truthfulness (sidq): saying it honestly, with the heart agreeing with the tongue, unlike the hypocrites.
6. Sincerity (ikhlas): saying and living it only for Allah, free from shirk and showing off.
7. Love (mahabbah): loving Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, this Kalima and its people, more than anything else.
Wa ma umiru illa liya'budullaha mukhlisina lahud-dina hunafa'.
Meaning: And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth.
This list of seven was compiled by later scholars from many verses and hadiths; it is not a single hadith. Some scholars add an eighth: rejecting everything worshipped besides Allah (2:256). Submission: 31:22; truthfulness: 29:2–3; love: 2:165.
The Shahadah is the foundation on which the other pillars stand. Saying it brings a person into Islam, and acting on the other pillars is its practical proof.
Meaning: Islam is built upon five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving zakah, Hajj, and fasting in Ramadan.

How a person accepts Islam
Anyone who wishes to become Muslim should: (1) sincerely believe in Allah alone and in Muhammad ﷺ as His final Messenger; (2) say the Shahadah with understanding, in Arabic if possible, and its meaning in his own language; (3) intend to leave every other religion and form of worship. No imam, mosque, ceremony or certificate is required — though two Muslim witnesses or a certificate from a mosque can help with Nikah, Hajj visas or official records.
Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A Christian (or Jew) entering Islam should also affirm that 'Isa (AS) is the servant and Messenger of Allah, not God or the son of God. Islam wipes out all sins committed before it (Sahih Muslim 121). There is no compulsion in religion (2:256).

After accepting Islam: ghusl and salah
It is recommended that a new Muslim take a ghusl (full bath), as the Prophet ﷺ instructed Qays ibn 'Asim (RA) when he accepted Islam. Then begin learning the five daily prayers, Surah al-Fatiha and a few short surahs, wudu, and the basics of halal and haram, step by step. Find a trustworthy local scholar or mosque for support.
Hanafi and Shafi'i: ghusl is recommended, but obligatory if the person was in a state of janabah before accepting Islam. Hanbali: obligatory in all cases. Salah becomes fard from the time of accepting Islam; past prayers are not made up.

Virtues of the Kalima
The Kalima is the key to Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever dies knowing there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise. 'La ilaha illallah' is the best dhikr, and whoever's last words are 'La ilaha illallah' will enter Paradise. Renew your faith by saying it often, and gently remind a dying person of it.
Meaning: Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.
Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the one sin Allah does not forgive if a person dies upon it (4:48), so protect the Kalima by avoiding all forms of shirk.
