Islamic History & Geography

From pre-Islamic Arabia to the present: 12 eras, 138 dated events and 60 important places. See the places →

Islamic history begins in the Arabian Peninsula in the early seventh century CE, when Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation of the Quran in the Cave of Hira near Makkah. Within a single generation the message had united the tribes of Arabia, and within a century Muslim rule stretched from the Atlantic coast of Spain to the borders of China and the Indus valley. Over the following fourteen centuries Muslims built great cities and universities, preserved and advanced the sciences, created distinctive traditions of art and architecture, and carried the faith by trade, teaching and migration to Africa, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia, China and Europe. Today more than 1.9 billion people around the world identify as Muslims.

This section offers a neutral overview of that story. It is divided into twelve eras, each with a short summary, a dated timeline of key events, and a gazetteer of the places that matter most, from the holy cities of Makkah, Madinah and Jerusalem to the historic capitals of Damascus, Baghdad, Cordoba, Cairo, Istanbul, Delhi and Samarkand. Dates are given in both Hijri (AH) and Common Era (CE) years. Where historians or Muslim traditions differ on a point, the text presents the matter as reported rather than as a judgement. The aim is to help readers of every background understand where Islam came from, how it spread, and why these places and events remain meaningful to Muslims today.

Pre-Islamic Arabia (to 610 CE)

c. 500 – 610 CE

Before Islam, Arabia was a land of nomadic and settled tribes with no central state, wedged between the Byzantine and Sasanian empires. Makkah grew as a trading town around the Kaaba, which Muslims believe was built by Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ismail but had by then been filled with idols. Muslims call this period the Jahiliyyah, the 'age of ignorance', marked by tribal feuds, poetry, pilgrimage fairs and the practice of female infanticide. In about 570 CE the Abyssinian governor Abraha marched on Makkah with an elephant army and was turned back; the Quran recalls this in Surah al-Fil, and the Prophet ﷺ was born in that 'Year of the Elephant'.

  1. Ancient () – Ibrahim and Ismail raise the Kaaba
According to the Quran, Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail raised the foundations of the House in the valley of Makkah and prayed for a messenger to arise from their descendants. Muslims trace the rites of Hajj and the well of Zamzam to this family.

  2. c. 570 (53 BH) – The Year of the Elephant
Abraha, the Abyssinian ruler of Yemen, marched on Makkah with an army including war elephants, intending to destroy the Kaaba. The Quran relates that the army was destroyed by flocks of birds, and Arabs dated events from this 'Year of the Elephant'.

  3. c. 570 (53 BH) – Birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah into the clan of Banu Hashim of the tribe of Quraysh, most commonly dated to Rabi al-Awwal in the Year of the Elephant. His father Abdullah had died before his birth, and he was nursed among the Banu Sa'd by Halimah.

  4. c. 590 (c. 32 BH) – The Pact of the Virtuous (Hilf al-Fudul)
Several clans of Quraysh pledged to defend anyone wronged in Makkah, whether native or stranger, after a Yemeni merchant was cheated. The young Muhammad ﷺ took part and later said he would still answer such a call in Islam.

  5. c. 595 (c. 28 BH) – Marriage to Khadijah
At about twenty-five, Muhammad ﷺ, known as al-Amin ('the trustworthy'), married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, a respected merchant whose caravans he had led to Syria. She was his only wife for some twenty-five years and the mother of most of his children.

  6. c. 605 (c. 18 BH) – Rebuilding of the Kaaba and the Black Stone
When Quraysh rebuilt the Kaaba after flood damage, the clans nearly fought over who would replace the Black Stone. Muhammad ﷺ resolved the dispute by placing the stone on a cloth that the chiefs lifted together, then setting it in place with his own hands.

The Prophetic era (610–632 CE)

1 BH – 11 AH / 610–632 CE

In 610 CE Muhammad ﷺ, then forty years old, received the first verses of the Quran in the Cave of Hira. For thirteen years he preached monotheism in Makkah under growing persecution, before migrating with his followers to Yathrib, renamed Madinah, in 622 CE, the event from which the Islamic calendar is counted. In Madinah the first Muslim community took shape, defended itself at Badr, Uhud and the Trench, and concluded the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Makkah was taken peacefully in 630 CE and the Kaaba cleared of idols. The Prophet ﷺ performed his Farewell Hajj in 632 CE and passed away in Madinah later that year, by which time nearly all of Arabia had accepted Islam.

  1. 610 (13 BH) – The first revelation
In Ramadan, while in retreat in the Cave of Hira, Muhammad ﷺ was visited by the angel Jibril, who commanded 'Read in the name of your Lord who created'. Khadijah comforted him and became the first to believe, followed by Ali, Abu Bakr and Zayd ibn Harithah.

  2. 613 (10 BH) – The call goes public
After about three years of private preaching, the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to warn his near kin and then called Quraysh openly from Mount Safa. Opposition grew, and the weak among the believers, such as Bilal and the family of Yasir, faced severe persecution.
    📍 Makkah
  3. 615 (8 BH) – Migration to Abyssinia
To escape persecution, a group of Muslims emigrated to the Christian kingdom of Aksum (Abyssinia), whose ruler, the Negus, was known for justice. When Quraysh demanded their return, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib recited from Surah Maryam and the Negus granted them protection.
  4. 616–619 (7–10 BH) – The boycott of Banu Hashim
Quraysh agreed to boycott the clans of Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, refusing trade and marriage with them. For about three years the Prophet ﷺ and his kin endured hunger in the valley of Abu Talib until the pact collapsed.

He paired each emigrant (Muhajir) with a helper (Ansari) in brotherhood and agreed a covenant, often called the Constitution of Madinah, with the city's tribes including its Jewish clans.

The Rightly Guided Caliphs (632–661 CE)

11 – 40 AH / 632–661 CE

After the Prophet's ﷺ passing, the community was led in turn by four of his closest companions: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), known to Sunni Muslims as the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Abu Bakr held Arabia together during the Ridda wars and ordered the Quran to be collected in one volume. Under Umar, Muslim armies took Syria, Jerusalem, Egypt and Persia from the Byzantine and Sasanian empires and founded the garrison cities of Kufa, Basra and Fustat. Uthman had standard copies of the Quran sent to the provinces. The caliphate of Ali was marked by civil war (the first fitna), ending with his assassination in 661 CE; Shia Muslims regard Ali as the first Imam.

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was chosen as the first caliph at the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah. He confronted tribes that withheld zakat or followed claimants to prophethood, and by 633 CE Arabia was reunited.
    📍 Madinah
  2. 633 (12 AH) – First compilation of the Quran
After many Quran memorisers were killed at the Battle of Yamamah, Umar urged Abu Bakr to have the Quran collected in a single volume. Zayd ibn Thabit gathered it from written materials and the memories of the companions, and the sheets (suhuf) were kept by Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Hafsah.

The Umayyad Caliphate (661–750 CE)

41 – 132 AH / 661–750 CE

Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan founded the Umayyad dynasty and moved the capital to Damascus, making the caliphate hereditary. The Umayyads expanded Muslim rule to its greatest territorial extent: across North Africa to Spain (711 CE), east to Transoxiana and Sindh, and to the gates of Constantinople. They built the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the Great Mosque of Damascus, made Arabic the language of administration and minted the first Islamic coins. The period also saw the tragedy of Karbala (680 CE), the revolt of Ibn al-Zubayr and growing discontent among non-Arab Muslims, which the Abbasid revolution harnessed to overthrow the dynasty in 750 CE.

The Abbasid Caliphate (750–1258 CE)

132 – 656 AH / 750–1258 CE

The Abbasids, descended from the Prophet's ﷺ uncle al-Abbas, founded Baghdad in 762 CE and presided over what is often called the Islamic Golden Age. Under caliphs such as Harun al-Rashid and al-Mamun, the House of Wisdom translated Greek, Persian and Indian works, and scholars like al-Khwarizmi, al-Kindi, al-Razi, Ibn Sina and al-Biruni advanced mathematics, medicine, astronomy and philosophy. The great collections of hadith and the four Sunni schools of law matured in this era. From the tenth century real power passed to regional dynasties (Buyids, Seljuks, Ghaznavids) while the caliph remained a symbolic head, until the Mongols sacked Baghdad in 1258 CE.

Al-Andalus: Muslim Spain (711–1492 CE)

92 – 897 AH / 711–1492 CE

Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa in 711 CE and within a few years most of the Iberian Peninsula was under Muslim rule. In 756 CE the Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman I, fleeing the Abbasids, founded an independent emirate at Cordoba, which his descendant Abd al-Rahman III raised to a caliphate in 929 CE. Tenth-century Cordoba, with its Great Mosque, libraries and scholars, was among the largest and most cultured cities in Europe, and Muslims, Christians and Jews contributed to its learning. After the caliphate fragmented into taifa kingdoms, the Almoravids and Almohads ruled from Marrakesh, while Christian kingdoms advanced from the north. The Nasrid kingdom of Granada, builder of the Alhambra, was the last Muslim state, surrendering in 1492 CE.

The Mamluks and the Mongols (1250–1517 CE)

648 – 923 AH / 1250–1517 CE

In 1258 CE the Mongol prince Hulagu sacked Baghdad and killed the last Abbasid caliph, a catastrophe long remembered in Muslim memory. Two years later the Mamluks of Egypt under Qutuz and Baybars defeated the Mongols at Ain Jalut in Palestine, the first decisive check on their advance. The Mamluks expelled the last Crusaders from the Levant in 1291 CE, hosted a shadow Abbasid caliphate in Cairo and built magnificent mosques, madrasas and hospitals. Meanwhile the Mongol successor states themselves embraced Islam: the Ilkhanate under Ghazan Khan (1295 CE) and the Golden Horde under Berke and Uzbeg Khan. Timur (Tamerlane) built a new empire from Samarkand, and scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Khaldun, Ibn Battuta and Ibn Hajar flourished.

The Ottoman Empire (1299–1922 CE)

699 – 1341 AH / 1299–1922 CE

Founded by Osman I in Anatolia around 1299 CE, the Ottoman state grew into one of history's longest-lived empires. Mehmed II conquered Constantinople in 1453 CE, fulfilling a long-held Muslim aspiration, and made it the capital, Istanbul. Selim I defeated the Mamluks in 1517 CE and brought Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz under Ottoman protection, after which the sultans styled themselves caliphs and Custodians of the Two Holy Mosques. Under Suleiman the Magnificent the empire reached from Hungary to Yemen and Algiers, and the architect Sinan built the Suleymaniye and Selimiye mosques. 907 – 1274 AH / 1501–1857 CE

Islam had reached the Indian subcontinent in 711 CE through Sindh and spread further under the Ghaznavids, the Delhi Sultanate and the teaching of Sufi saints such as Muinuddin Chishti of Ajmer. In 1526 CE Babur, a descendant of Timur, defeated the Delhi Sultan at Panipat and founded the Mughal Empire, which Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb expanded over most of India; Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal at Agra and the Badshahi Mosque was raised in Lahore. In Persia, Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid dynasty in 1501 CE and made Twelver Shia Islam the state religion, with Isfahan becoming a jewel of Islamic architecture under Shah Abbas. The Mughal state declined after Aurangzeb's death in 1707 CE and was formally ended by the British in 1857 CE.

The modern Muslim world (1947 – today)

1366 AH – present / 1947 CE – present

After the Second World War most Muslim-majority countries gained independence: Pakistan in 1947, Indonesia in 1949, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Malaysia and Algeria in the following years, and the Central Asian republics in 1991. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation was founded in 1969 after an arson attack on Masjid al-Aqsa, and today has 57 member states. The Two Holy Mosques have been expanded many times to receive millions of pilgrims, and Muslim communities have grown in Europe, the Americas and Australia. The era has also seen conflicts, including those over Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Syria, alongside remarkable growth in Islamic education, finance, media and digital access to the Quran and hadith. Muslims today number about a quarter of humanity.
