Makkah

Saudi Arabia · holy city · map

Makkah is the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. At its heart stands the Kaaba inside Masjid al-Haram, the direction (qiblah) towards which Muslims pray and which, according to the Quran, was raised by Ibrahim and Ismail. The Prophet ﷺ began his mission here in 610 CE and returned as its leader in 630 CE. Today Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world, receiving millions of pilgrims each year for Hajj and Umrah; only Muslims may enter the city.

  • The Quran calls it 'the first House established for mankind' (3:96).
  • The Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad) is set in the Kaaba's eastern corner.
  • The well of Zamzam lies a few metres from the Kaaba.
  • Madinah

Saudi Arabia · holy city · map

Madinah, formerly Yathrib, is the second holiest city in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ migrated here in 622 CE and built the first Muslim community and state, and he is buried in the Prophet's Mosque (al-Masjid an-Nabawi). It served as the capital of the early caliphate until the time of Ali. Today the greatly expanded Prophet's Mosque, with its Green Dome and Rawdah, welcomes millions of visitors, and the cemetery of al-Baqi holds many companions and members of the Prophet's family.

  • The Islamic calendar begins with the Hijrah to Madinah in 622 CE.
  • The Prophet's Mosque was first built of mud brick and palm trunks.
  • Abu Bakr and Umar are buried beside the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Jerusalem (Al-Quds)

Palestine · holy city · map

Jerusalem, called al-Quds or Bayt al-Maqdis in Arabic, is the third holiest city in Islam and sacred also to Jews and Christians. Masjid al-Aqsa was the first qiblah of the Muslims and, according to the Quran and hadith, the destination of the Prophet's ﷺ Night Journey (Isra and Miraj). The city came under Muslim rule in 637 CE when Caliph Umar accepted its surrender; it was held by the Crusaders from 1099 until Salahuddin recovered it in 1187 CE. The al-Aqsa compound, including the Dome of the Rock built in 691 CE, remains a centre of prayer and of great political sensitivity today.

  • Muslims prayed towards Jerusalem for about 16–17 months after the Hijrah.
  • The Dome of the Rock is the oldest surviving major Islamic monument.
  • The compound is known as al-Haram al-Sharif.

    Ta'if طائف

Saudi Arabia · seerah site · map

Ta'if is a cool mountain town about 90 km south-east of Makkah, historically home to the Thaqif tribe. In 619 CE the Prophet ﷺ travelled here seeking support and was driven out with stones, an episode remembered for his patient supplication. After the Battle of Hunayn in 630 CE the Muslims besieged the town, and Thaqif accepted Islam the following year. Today it is a summer resort known for its roses, fruit and the Abdullah ibn Abbas Mosque.

    Badr بدر

Saudi Arabia · battlefield · map

Badr is a village and wells about 130 km south-west of Madinah on the old caravan route to Syria. Here in Ramadan 2 AH (March 624 CE) some 313 Muslims defeated a much larger Makkan army, the first major battle in Islamic history. The Quran calls the day 'Yawm al-Furqan', the Day of Criterion. A walled cemetery marks the graves of the fourteen Muslim martyrs of the battle.

  • Battle fought on 17 Ramadan 2 AH.
  • Abu Jahl was killed in the battle.
  • Mount Uhud

Saudi Arabia · battlefield · map

Uhud is a mountain on the northern edge of Madinah. In Shawwal 3 AH (625 CE) the Makkans returned to avenge Badr; after the archers left their post on a small hill, the Muslims suffered heavy losses and the Prophet ﷺ was wounded. Hamzah, the Prophet's uncle, was among about seventy martyrs buried at the foot of the mountain. The Prophet ﷺ said of it, 'Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it.' Visitors today see the martyrs' cemetery, the Archers' Hill (Jabal al-Rumah) and a modern mosque.

  • Uhud is about 7 km long.
  • The Quran discusses the battle in Surah Al Imran.
  • Hunayn حنین

Saudi Arabia · battlefield · map

Hunayn is a valley on the road between Makkah and Ta'if (its exact location is approximate). Shortly after the conquest of Makkah in Shawwal 8 AH (630 CE), the Hawazin and Thaqif tribes ambushed the Muslim army here. The Muslims, then numbering about 12,000, were at first thrown into confusion before regrouping around the Prophet ﷺ and winning. The Quran mentions the battle by name as a lesson against relying on numbers.

  • The battle is named in Quran 9:25.
  • Spoils were distributed at nearby al-Ji'ranah.
  • Tabuk

Saudi Arabia · seerah site · map

Tabuk is an oasis town in north-western Arabia near the Jordanian border. In Rajab 9 AH (630 CE) the Prophet ﷺ led some 30,000 men here in the summer heat to meet a reported Byzantine threat; no battle took place, but several northern towns made treaties with Madinah. The expedition was the Prophet's ﷺ last campaign and a test of sincerity discussed at length in Surah al-Tawbah. Today Tabuk is a provincial capital with the historic Mosque of the Repentance and an Ottoman fort.

  • The campaign is also called Jaysh al-'Usrah, 'the army of hardship'.
  • The Hejaz Railway passed through Tabuk.
  • Khaybar

Saudi Arabia · battlefield · map

Khaybar is a fertile oasis about 150 km north of Madinah, once home to Jewish tribes with a chain of strong fortresses. In 7 AH (628 CE), after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the Muslims besieged and took the forts; the traditions highlight the role of Ali ibn Abi Talib in the final assault. The inhabitants were allowed to remain and farm the land in return for half the harvest. The ruins of the Qamus fort and old Khaybar village can still be seen.

Saudi Arabia · seerah site · map

Al-Hudaybiyyah, today's al-Shumaisi, lies on the western edge of the Makkah sanctuary on the road to Jeddah. In Dhul-Qa'dah 6 AH (628 CE) the Prophet ﷺ and about 1,400 companions camped here intending Umrah and were stopped by Quraysh. Under a tree the companions pledged their loyalty (Bay'at al-Ridwan), and a ten-year truce was agreed whose terms seemed unfavourable but which the Quran calls 'a clear victory'. A mosque marks the site, which also serves as a miqat for pilgrims.

  • Surah al-Fath (48) was revealed on the return journey.
  • Suhayl ibn Amr negotiated for Quraysh.

Saudi Arabia · seerah site · map

The Cave of Hira is a small cave near the summit of Jabal al-Nour, 'the Mountain of Light', on the north-eastern edge of Makkah. Before his prophethood Muhammad ﷺ used to retreat here for reflection and worship. In Ramadan 610 CE the angel Jibril came to him in the cave with the first revealed words of the Quran, 'Read in the name of your Lord' (96:1–5). Pilgrims today climb about 640 m of steps and paths to reach it.

Saudi Arabia · seerah site · map

The Cave of Thawr is on Jabal Thawr, south of Makkah. During the Hijrah in 622 CE the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr hid here for three nights while Quraysh searched for them. The Quran recalls the moment when the Prophet ﷺ reassured his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.' Tradition adds that a spider's web and a dove's nest at the entrance turned the searchers away.
