Rules & Etiquette of Reading the Quran
The Qur'an is the word of Allah, and reading it is among the greatest acts of worship: every letter earns ten rewards. Its etiquette covers purity, intention, the manner of recitation, Sajdah Tilawat, and respect for the mushaf. This guide follows the Hanafi school, with brief notes on other views.
1
Sincere intention
Read the Qur'an to please Allah, to gain guidance and to act upon it — not to show off or for worldly praise. Actions are judged by intentions, and the Prophet ﷺ warned about one who recited the Qur'an only so that people would call him a qari.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1; Sahih Muslim 1905
2
Wudu for touching the mushaf
Be in wudu to touch the mushaf (the written Qur'an). You may recite from memory without wudu, and you may read without wudu if you do not touch the text — for example turning pages with a separate cloth or using a stand. The Prophet ﷺ remembered Allah in all his states.
La yamassuhu illal-mutahharun.
Meaning: None touch it except the purified.
The four schools agree that wudu is required to touch the mushaf, based on this verse and the letter of 'Amr ibn Hazm 'None should touch the Qur'an except one who is pure' (Muwatta Malik). Some scholars interpret the verse as referring to the angels and the Preserved Tablet. On a phone or tablet, many Hanafi muftis say: reading without wudu is allowed, but avoid touching the screen where verses are displayed. Children learning the Qur'an are given leniency.
Qur'an 56:79; Muwatta Malik, Kitab al-Qur'an; Sahih Muslim 373

Janabah and menstruation
A person in janabah (needing ghusl) must not recite the Qur'an, even from memory, nor touch it, until taking a ghusl. According to the Hanafi school and the majority, a woman in menstruation or post-natal bleeding also may not recite or touch the Qur'an. She may listen to recitation, do dhikr, recite durood, and read Qur'anic duas (such as 'Rabbana atina…') with the intention of dua, not recitation.
'Ali (RA) said nothing kept the Prophet ﷺ from the Qur'an except janabah. Hanafi: a menstruating teacher may teach children by spelling one word at a time. Malikis permit a menstruating woman to recite from memory (fearing she may forget), and some scholars agree with them.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 146; Sunan Abi Dawud 229; Nur al-Idah (Hanafi)

Clean place, clothes and posture
Recite in a clean place, in clean clothes, with a fresh mouth (use miswak or brush). It is preferable to face the Qiblah and sit with humility and calm, keeping the mushaf on a stand (rahl) or a pillow in the lap, higher than the ground.
Reciting while walking, lying down or travelling is permitted; facing the Qiblah is a recommended etiquette, not a condition. Do not recite in toilets or impure places.
Qur'an 3:191; Sahih al-Bukhari 297; Sunan Ibn Majah (miswak)
5
Ta'awwudh and Bismillah
Begin with the ta'awwudh, as Allah commands, then say Bismillah at the beginning of every surah except Surah at-Tawbah. If you start in the middle of a surah, the ta'awwudh is enough, though adding Bismillah is good.
Fa idha qara'tal-Qur'ana fasta'idh billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim.
A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim. Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.
Meaning: So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, the accursed.
I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, the accursed. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Hanafi: the ta'awwudh is Sunnah at the start of recitation; if you stop for worldly talk, repeat it.
Qur'an 16:98; Qur'an 9:1

Tarteel and Tajweed
Recite slowly and clearly (tarteel), pronouncing every letter from its correct makhraj and observing the rules of tajweed. Avoid rushing. Learn from a qualified qari, since major mistakes (lahn jali) can change the meaning. Whoever struggles with the Qur'an while learning gets a double reward.
Wa rattilil-Qur'ana tartila.
Meaning: And recite the Qur'an with measured, clear recitation.
See the Tajweed section in the Learn tab for the rules with examples.

Read with reflection
The Qur'an was revealed to be understood and acted upon. Read the translation and tafsir in Urdu or English alongside the Arabic, pause at verses of mercy to ask Allah for it and at verses of punishment to seek refuge, and think about how each verse applies to your life.
Kitabun anzalnahu ilayka mubarakun liyaddabbaru ayatihi wa liyatadhakkara ulul-albab.
Afala yatadabbarunal-Qur'ana am 'ala qulubin aqfaluha.
Meaning: A blessed Book We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses and that people of understanding may take heed.
Do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts?
Qur'an 38:29; Qur'an 47:24; Sahih Muslim 772

Beautify your voice
Recite in a pleasant, moving voice as far as you are able, without turning it into music or breaking the rules of tajweed. Do not raise your voice so much that it disturbs people who are praying, sleeping or working.
Zayyinul-Qur'ana bi-aswatikum.
Meaning: Beautify the Qur'an with your voices.
The Prophet ﷺ also said: 'He is not of us who does not recite the Qur'an in a pleasant tone.'
Sunan Abi Dawud 1468; Sunan an-Nasa'i 1015; Sahih al-Bukhari 7527

Listen attentively
When the Qur'an is being recited, listen silently and attentively — including in Salah behind the imam, on the radio or a recording. Do not chat or keep the recitation playing as background noise where people are not listening.
Meaning: And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and remain silent, so that you may receive mercy.
Hanafi: this is why the follower does not recite al-Fatiha behind the imam. Shafi'is hold that the follower recites al-Fatiha in every prayer.
Qur'an 7:204

The 14 places of Sajdah Tilawat
In the Hanafi school there are 14 verses of prostration, marked in Pakistani mushafs with the word 'السجدة' in the margin:
1. Al-A'raf 7:206
2. Ar-Ra'd 13:15
3. An-Nahl 16:50
4. Al-Isra 17:109
5. Maryam 19:58
6. Al-Hajj 22:18
7. Al-Furqan 25:60
8. An-Naml 27:26
9. As-Sajdah 32:15
10. Sad 38:24
11. Fussilat (Ha Mim as-Sajdah) 41:38
12. An-Najm 53:62
13. Al-Inshiqaq 84:21
14. Al-'Alaq 96:19
Shafi'is and Hanbalis also count 14, but include the second sajdah of Surah al-Hajj (22:77) and treat Sad 38:24 as a prostration of thanks rather than of recitation. The well-known Maliki view counts 11, excluding an-Najm, al-Inshiqaq and al-'Alaq.

How to perform Sajdah Tilawat
Hanafi: Sajdah Tilawat is wajib on the one who recites a verse of sajdah and on whoever hears it, even unintentionally. Its conditions are like Salah: wudu, clean body and place, covering the 'awrah and facing the Qiblah. Method: (preferably stand), say 'Allahu Akbar' without raising the hands, go into one sajdah, say 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la' at least three times, then say 'Allahu Akbar' and rise. There is no tashahhud or salam. Many also recite the dua below in the sajdah.
Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.
Sajada wajhiya lilladhi khalaqahu, wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu, bi-hawlihi wa quwwatih.
Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.
My face has prostrated to the One who created it and brought forth its hearing and sight by His might and power.
If the verse is recited in Salah, prostrate straight away (within about three verses). Outside Salah it may be delayed, but doing it soon is better. Repeating the same verse in one sitting needs only one sajdah. Shafi'is, Malikis and Hanbalis hold Sajdah Tilawat to be Sunnah, not wajib, citing 'Umar (RA) who recited a sajdah verse on the minbar and did not prostrate.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 580; Sunan Abi Dawud 1414; Sahih Muslim 81; Sahih al-Bukhari, Abwab Sujud al-Qur'an

Respect the mushaf
Keep the mushaf in a high, clean place; do not put it on the floor, place anything on top of it, stretch your feet towards it, or take it into the toilet. Hold it with respect, and close it and put it back on its shelf when you finish. Wrap old or torn copies in a clean cloth and bury them in a clean place where people do not walk (or follow the local arrangement for shaheed pages).
Closing the mushaf is good manners to protect it; the common saying that Shaytan reads an open mushaf has no basis. Kissing the mushaf out of love is permitted by many scholars and is reported from 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl (RA), but it is not a required act. 'Uthman (RA) had extra copies burned to protect the Qur'an (Sahih al-Bukhari 4987); Hanafis prefer burial.
Qur'an 22:32; Qur'an 56:77-79; Sahih al-Bukhari 4987; Sunan ad-Darimi
13
Ending the recitation
When you stop, you may simply stop at the end of a verse or a complete passage; the Prophet ﷺ told Ibn Mas'ud (RA) 'That is enough' when he wished him to stop. Many people say 'Sadaq Allahul-'Azim' at the end. Then make dua, as the time after reciting is a good time for dua.
Sadaq Allahul-'Azim.
Meaning: Allah the Magnificent has spoken the truth.
Saying 'Sadaq Allahul-'Azim' is a custom of later Muslims, not a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Its meaning is correct (Qur'an 3:95 'Say: Allah has spoken the truth'), so many scholars permit it occasionally, but it should not be treated as a required ending; some scholars discourage making it a fixed habit.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5050; Qur'an 3:95

Regular reading, khatam and reward of each letter
Read some Qur'an every day, even a little — the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done regularly. Aim to complete a khatam regularly, for example once a month (one para a day). The Qur'an will come on the Day of Judgement as an intercessor for its companions, and every letter you read earns ten rewards.
Man qara'a harfan min kitabillahi falahu bihi hasanah, wal-hasanatu bi'ashri amthaliha.
Meaning: Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah receives one good deed for it, and a good deed is multiplied ten times. I do not say that 'Alif Lam Mim' is one letter; rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.
The Prophet ﷺ advised 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (RA) to complete the Qur'an in a month, and allowed as little as seven days; finishing in less than three days without understanding is discouraged. 'The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027). Making dua with family at a khatam is reported from Anas (RA).
