Food and Drink Basics

🍽️ Halal & Haraam

A short overview of the food rules; the Halal Foods section of the app covers them in full detail.

Allah says: 'O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah' (2:172). The default for food and drink is that it is halal, except what Allah has specifically forbidden: 'He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah' (2:173, see also 5:3).

The main prohibited categories are: pork and its by-products; carrion (animals that died without proper slaughter); flowing blood; animals slaughtered in the name of other than Allah; intoxicating drinks; and, according to the Prophet's ﷺ teaching, predatory animals with fangs and birds with talons (Muslim 1934), as well as donkeys (Bukhari 5527). Seafood is halal by agreement of the majority (5:96); the Hanafi school permits only fish, while the other three schools permit all sea creatures.

Meat of permissible land animals must be slaughtered properly, with Allah's name mentioned, by a Muslim or by one of the People of the Book (5:5). Schools differ on details such as forgetting the tasmiyah, mechanical slaughter and stunning; these are explained in the Halal Foods section.

Good manners of eating are also part of halal living: saying Bismillah, eating with the right hand, eating from what is nearest (Bukhari 5376), not wasting, and not overeating (7:31).
