Dress and Adornment

👕 Halal & Haraam

Islam encourages beauty and cleanliness while setting limits of modesty and avoiding arrogance.

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah is beautiful and loves beauty' (Muslim 91), and Allah says: 'O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prayer' (7:31). Wearing clean, good clothes is permitted and encouraged. The general rule is that any clothing is halal provided it covers the awrah, is not specifically forbidden, is not worn out of arrogance, and does not imitate the opposite sex or what is a distinctive religious symbol of other faiths.

Awrah: for men, the majority of scholars define the awrah as from the navel to the knee; the Hanafis include the knee itself. For women in front of non-mahram men, the majority hold that the whole body is covered except the face and hands, with the Hanafis also excluding the feet; some Hanbali and other scholars hold that covering the face is also required or strongly recommended. Allah commands believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty (24:30), and believing women to lower their gaze, guard their modesty, not display their adornment except what ordinarily appears, and draw their head-coverings over their chests (24:31). He also tells the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (33:59). Clothing should be loose and opaque enough not to reveal the shape of the body.

Silk and gold for men: the Prophet ﷺ said that silk and gold are forbidden for the males of his ummah and permitted for its females (Abu Dawud 4057, Tirmidhi 1720, sahih). Small amounts of silk (up to four fingers' width) and silk for medical need are allowed; a silver ring is permitted for men (Bukhari 5866). Men are also warned against letting garments trail out of pride (Bukhari 5787); scholars differ on whether lowering the garment below the ankles without pride is haram or makruh.

Body alterations: 'Allah has cursed women who tattoo and those who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck facial hair (eyebrows) and those who have it plucked, and those who file their teeth for beauty, changing the creation of Allah' (Bukhari 5931). Permanent tattoos and plucking or shaping the eyebrows for beauty are therefore prohibited by the majority, while removing unusual or excessive hair that causes harm is allowed by many scholars. Cosmetic surgery purely to change appearance is generally prohibited, but surgery to correct defects, injuries or deformities is permitted. Hair extensions made from human hair are forbidden (Bukhari 5934). Dyeing grey hair is recommended, avoiding pure black according to many scholars (Muslim 2102).

Perfume is encouraged for men. Women may wear perfume at home and among women and mahrams, but the Prophet ﷺ forbade a woman passing by men while wearing perfume so that they notice its scent (Abu Dawud 4173, Nasa'i 5126, hasan). Men may not imitate women and women may not imitate men in dress and manner (Bukhari 5885), and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever imitates a people is one of them' (Abu Dawud 4031, hasan), which scholars apply to dress that is a religious symbol of another faith, not to ordinary clothing shared by all.
