Speech and Social Conduct

🗣️ Halal & Haraam

The tongue can earn great reward or great sin, so Islam sets clear limits on what we say about and to others.

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent' (Bukhari 6018). Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness to Paradise, while lying leads to wickedness and wickedness to the Fire (Bukhari 6094). Lying is haram, including 'white lies' to make people laugh, false reviews, exaggerated advertising and lying to children. The Prophet ﷺ permitted saying what is not literally true only in three situations: reconciling between people, in war, and between spouses to keep affection (Muslim 2605), and scholars limit this to what harms no one's rights.

Backbiting (ghibah) is forbidden: 'Do not spy or backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it' (49:12). The Prophet ﷺ defined it: 'Mentioning your brother with what he dislikes.' If what you say is true, it is backbiting; if it is false, it is slander (buhtan) (Muslim 2589). Exceptions recognised by scholars include seeking justice from an authority, asking for a fatwa, warning someone about a person before marriage or business, and reporting a crime, done honestly and only as needed. Carrying tales to cause discord (namimah) is a major sin.

Slander and false accusation, especially accusing chaste people of immorality, are major sins with severe punishment in this world and the next (24:4, 24:23). Spreading unverified news and rumours is also prohibited: 'If a sinful person comes to you with news, verify it' (49:6), and 'It is enough lying for a person to narrate everything he hears' (Muslim 5). This applies strongly to forwarding messages on social media.

Mocking and insulting: 'Let not a people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them... and do not insult one another or call each other by offensive nicknames' (49:11). Cursing is not the habit of a believer: 'The believer is not one who slanders, curses, is obscene or foul-mouthed' (Tirmidhi 1977, hasan). Abusing others online is the same as doing it face to face.

Keeping promises and trusts: breaking promises and betraying trust are signs of hypocrisy (Bukhari 33), and Allah commands: 'Fulfil the covenant; indeed the covenant will be questioned about' (17:34). Private conversations are a trust (Abu Dawud 4869, hasan), so sharing someone's secrets, screenshots of private chats or personal information without permission is not allowed, except to prevent serious harm.
