The greatest haram of all is shirk, and Islam protects pure worship from superstition, magic and innovation.
Shirk, associating partners with Allah, is the gravest sin: 'Indeed Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills' (4:48), and 'Indeed shirk is a great injustice' (31:13). It includes worshipping, praying to, prostrating to or sacrificing for anyone other than Allah, believing that anyone else controls benefit and harm independently, and swearing by other than Allah, which the Prophet ﷺ forbade: 'Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or remain silent' (Bukhari 2679). Minor shirk includes showing off in worship (riya).
Fortune-telling and astrology: 'Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights' (Muslim 2230). 'Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad' (Abu Dawud 3904, sahih). This includes palm reading, tarot cards, horoscopes, coffee-cup reading and 'psychics'. Reading horoscopes for fun is still prohibited by scholars, because it normalises claims to knowledge of the unseen, which belongs to Allah alone (27:65).
Magic (sihr) is among the seven destructive sins (Bukhari 2766), and Allah condemns those who learn and practise it (2:102). Seeking a magician to harm someone or to break a spell is forbidden. The permissible protection is ruqyah: reciting the Quran and authentic supplications. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'There is no harm in ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk' (Muslim 2200).
Amulets and talismans: 'Ruqa (incantations of shirk), tama'im (amulets) and tiwalah (love charms) are shirk' (Abu Dawud 3883, sahih). Wearing beads, threads, 'evil eye' charms or objects believed to bring luck or protection is forbidden. Scholars differ on hanging amulets containing only Quranic verses: some early scholars permitted it, while many others forbade it to block the path to shirk and because of the risk of disrespect to the Quran; reciting the verses is the agreed method.
Superstitions: the Prophet ﷺ said: 'There is no contagion (by itself), no evil omen, no hamah and no Safar' (Bukhari 5757), and 'Taking evil omens is shirk' (Abu Dawud 3910, sahih). Believing that numbers, days, months (such as Safar), black cats, birds or broken mirrors bring bad luck has no place in Islam; good optimism (fa'l), such as hearing a pleasant word, is liked.
Innovation (bid'ah): 'Whoever introduces into this matter of ours something that is not from it, it will be rejected' (Bukhari 2697, Muslim 1718). Scholars agree that inventing new acts of worship, fixed rituals or beliefs without basis is forbidden. They differ in how they classify certain practices: many scholars divide innovations into good and bad, considering new means that serve established goals acceptable, while others hold that every innovation in worship is blameworthy. Some practices, such as celebrating the Mawlid, are disputed among Sunni scholars, and Muslims should discuss them respectfully. New worldly inventions, technologies and administrative methods are not bid'ah.
