Entertainment and Media

🎬 Halal & Haraam

Lawful recreation refreshes the heart, but entertainment must not involve haram content or steal time from our duties.

Islam is not hostile to joy. The Prophet ﷺ raced with Aisha (Abu Dawud 2578), let her watch the Abyssinians play with spears in the mosque (Bukhari 950), and allowed young girls to sing on Eid, saying: 'Every people has a festival and this is our festival' (Bukhari 952, Muslim 892). Sports, swimming, archery, horse riding, wholesome humour and family outings are all permitted, and beneficial ones are rewarded.

Music is an area of genuine scholarly difference. The four Sunni schools, in their established positions, prohibit musical instruments other than the daff (frame drum), based on the hadith: 'There will be people of my ummah who will consider lawful zina, silk, intoxicants and musical instruments (ma'azif)' (Bukhari 5590). The daff is permitted by agreement at weddings and Eid: 'Announce the marriage and beat the daff for it' (Tirmidhi 1088, Ibn Majah 1896). A minority of scholars, such as Ibn Hazm and some contemporary scholars, permit music whose content and setting are clean, questioning the hadith's interpretation. All agree that songs with indecent, shirk-filled or immoral lyrics are haram, and that nasheeds and poetry with good content and no instruments are permitted.

Images and statues: the Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most severely punished people on the Day of Judgement will be the image-makers' (Bukhari 5950), and that angels do not enter a house containing a dog or images (Bukhari 3225). Scholars agree that three-dimensional statues of living beings are prohibited, except dolls for children (Bukhari 6130). Regarding hand-drawn pictures, the majority prohibit them except for necessity, children's education or images with heads removed. For photography and video, most contemporary scholars permit them for legitimate purposes (identity documents, education, news, memories), describing them as capturing a reflection rather than creating, while some scholars disallow photography except for need. Displaying pictures of living beings prominently on walls is discouraged by many.

Films, TV and online content are judged by their content: anything containing nudity, sexual scenes, promotion of shirk or immorality, or mockery of religion is haram to watch. Educational, documentary and wholesome content is permitted. Video games follow the same principle: they are allowed if their content is clean, they do not involve gambling, and they do not lead to neglect of prayer and duties.

Social media is a tool, rewarded when used for good and sinful when used for backbiting, showing off, immodest images, spreading lies or wasting hours. Time is a trust: 'There are two blessings in which many people are cheated: health and free time' (Bukhari 6412), and 'Part of a person's good Islam is leaving what does not concern him' (Tirmidhi 2317, hasan). A good test for any entertainment: does it involve anything haram, does it make me miss an obligation, and does it bring me closer to or further from Allah?
