Humans are trustees on earth, responsible for animals, natural resources, neighbours and public property.
Allah made humans successors (khalifah) on earth (2:30) and warned: 'Do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order' (7:56). Polluting rivers, destroying habitats needlessly and harming the environment are forms of corruption (fasad). The Prophet ﷺ encouraged planting: 'No Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person or an animal eats, except that it is charity for him' (Bukhari 2320).
Kindness to animals is a duty. A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she locked up, neither feeding it nor letting it eat from the earth (Bukhari 3482), and a man was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog (Bukhari 2363). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah has prescribed excellence in everything; when you slaughter, slaughter well, sharpen your blade and spare the animal suffering' (Muslim 1955). Overloading animals, using them as targets (Muslim 1957), animal fighting for entertainment, and hunting for sport without using the meat are prohibited.
Waste and extravagance are forbidden: 'Eat and drink, but do not be wasteful; indeed He does not like the wasteful' (7:31), and 'Indeed the wasteful are brothers of the devils' (17:27). This includes wasting food, water, electricity and money. Scholars cite the Prophet's ﷺ moderation in water use for ablution (Bukhari 201) as a model even when water is plentiful.
Neighbours have great rights. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Allah, he does not believe' three times, and when asked who, he said: 'The one whose neighbour is not safe from his harm' (Bukhari 6016). Loud noise, blocking driveways, dumping rubbish and spying on neighbours are therefore sinful. Removing something harmful from the road is a branch of faith (Muslim 35), and the rights of the road include lowering the gaze, not causing harm, returning greetings and enjoining good (Bukhari 2465).
Public property belongs to everyone, so stealing from it, vandalising it or using it for private gain is a breach of trust (ghulul) (3:161). Using an employer's or the state's resources wrongly, tax fraud and fare evasion fall under taking wealth unjustly (4:29). Obeying lawful rules is part of obedience to those in authority (4:59) and keeping one's covenants: 'Hearing and obeying is due upon the Muslim in what he likes and dislikes, unless he is commanded to sin' (Bukhari 7144). Traffic laws, safety regulations and building codes protect lives, so speeding dangerously, driving under the influence or breaking safety laws are sinful, not merely illegal. Muslims living as citizens or residents in non-Muslim countries are bound by their agreement to follow the law, except where it compels a sin.
