Islam requires fairness, transparency and honesty in every sale, contract and market dealing.
Allah says: 'Woe to those who give less than due, who, when they take a measure from people, take in full, but if they give by measure or weight to them, they cause loss' (83:1-3). He also commands: 'Give full measure when you measure and weigh with an even balance; that is better and best in outcome' (17:35). Short-changing customers, hidden charges and selling underweight goods are forms of this sin, whether in a market stall or an online store.
Truthfulness brings blessing. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The buyer and seller have the option as long as they have not separated. If they are truthful and make things clear, their transaction will be blessed; if they lie and conceal, the blessing of their transaction will be erased' (Bukhari 2079). He warned that a false oath may promote a sale but erases its blessing (Bukhari 2087), and that among those whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Judgement is one who sells his goods with a false oath (Muslim 106).
Gharar, excessive uncertainty, invalidates a contract. The Prophet ﷺ forbade the 'pebble sale' and sales involving gharar (Muslim 1513), such as selling fish still in the sea, a crop before it is ripe, or goods whose quantity, quality or price is unknown. He also said: 'Do not sell what you do not have' (Abu Dawud 3503, Tirmidhi 1232). Minor uncertainty that cannot be avoided and that people customarily accept is forgiven by scholarly agreement.
Hoarding (ihtikar) is forbidden: 'No one hoards except a sinner' (Muslim 1605). This refers to withholding essential goods, especially food and medicine, to create scarcity and raise prices. Monopolies and price manipulation that harm the public, cartels and fake bidding to raise prices (najsh, Bukhari 2142) are prohibited. The Prophet ﷺ also forbade undercutting another's deal once agreed (Muslim 1412).
Contracts and debts should be written down (2:282) and promises kept (5:1). Delaying payment of a debt by someone able to pay is injustice (Bukhari 2287). Islam encourages leniency: 'May Allah have mercy on a man who is easy-going when he sells, when he buys and when he asks for repayment' (Bukhari 2076). Ethical business is therefore not only about avoiding haram but about earning trust and blessing.
