Any game or scheme where people stake money so that some win at the others' loss by chance is maysir, and it is haram.
Allah says: 'O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars and divining arrows are only an abomination of Satan's handiwork, so avoid it that you may succeed. Satan only wants to cause enmity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling and to turn you away from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer' (5:90-91). Earlier Allah said that in them is great sin and some benefit, but their sin is greater than their benefit (2:219).
The essence of gambling (maysir or qimar) is that each participant pays a stake and the outcome, decided wholly or mainly by chance, means one gains what others lose. It includes casinos, online betting, sports betting, poker and card games for money, slot machines, scratch cards and national lotteries. The Prophet ﷺ took even the invitation to gamble so seriously that he said: 'Whoever says to his companion, come, let me gamble with you, let him give charity' as expiation (Bukhari 4860, Muslim 1647).
Raffles and prize draws: if people buy tickets and the prize is funded by the ticket money, it is gambling, even for a charity. A free draw, where no one pays to enter, or a prize given by a shop to customers who would have bought anyway at the normal price, is generally permitted. Competitions where the prize is offered by a third party (such as a sponsor or the state) and entrants do not stake money are allowed by most scholars, especially for beneficial skills. The Prophet ﷺ allowed prizes in races of camels, horses and archery (Abu Dawud 2574, Tirmidhi 1700).
Games: games of pure chance such as backgammon (nard) were strongly condemned: 'Whoever plays nardashir is as if he dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig' (Muslim 2260). The majority view this as prohibited; chess is considered makruh by some and permitted by others if it does not involve money, distract from prayer or cause harm. Modern video games are judged by their content and effect; paid 'loot boxes' with random rewards resemble gambling and many scholars advise avoiding them.
Speculation: buying shares or assets for genuine investment is not gambling, because one owns a real asset whose value depends on actual performance. However, contracts that are pure bets on price movements without owning the asset, such as many binary options, contracts for difference and highly leveraged day-trading with interest, are considered by most scholars to be gambling or riba. Gambling destroys families and wealth; it is also impermissible to work in or profit from gambling businesses.
