No sin is too great for Allah's forgiveness; sincere repentance erases sins and can even turn them into good deeds.
Allah says: 'Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah forgives all sins. Indeed He is the Forgiving, the Merciful' (39:53). Every human falls into sin; what matters is turning back. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah rejoices more at the repentance of His servant than a man who lost his camel carrying his food and drink in the desert and then suddenly found it (Muslim 2747).
Scholars list the conditions of sincere repentance (tawbah nasuh, 66:8): stopping the sin immediately; feeling genuine regret, for 'regret is repentance' (Ibn Majah 4252, sahih); firmly resolving never to return to it; and doing so before death approaches and before the sun rises from the west (Tirmidhi 3537, hasan; 4:17-18). If a person falls into the sin again, they repent again; Allah's door remains open.
When a sin involves the rights of other people, a fourth condition is added: returning those rights. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever has wronged his brother in his honour or anything else, let him seek his pardon today, before there is no dinar or dirham' (Bukhari 2449). Stolen or wrongfully taken money should be returned to its owner or their heirs; if they cannot be found, it is given in charity on their behalf. For backbiting, scholars advise seeking forgiveness if this will not cause greater harm, and otherwise praying for the person and speaking well of them where they were spoken ill of.
Haram wealth: interest received, earnings from forbidden trades and similar income should be disposed of by giving it to charity or public welfare without intending reward, while one keeps only the lawful capital (2:279). A person who became Muslim keeps what they earned before Islam, because 'Islam wipes out what came before it' (Muslim 121).
Allah's generosity goes further: after mentioning shirk, murder and zina, He says: 'Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work; for them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful' (25:68-70). Repentance should be followed by good deeds, for 'good deeds remove bad deeds' (11:114), by changing the environment and friends that led to the sin, and by frequent istighfar, as the Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness more than seventy times a day (Bukhari 6307). A Muslim should never let past sins block them from returning to Allah, nor take Allah's mercy as permission to keep sinning.
