Thamud inherited the land after ‘Ad and became famous for carving homes out of solid rock in the valley of al-Hijr. Allah sent them their brother Salih (AS), a man they had once admired, to call them to worship Allah alone and to abandon the arrogance of their leaders. When they demanded a miracle, Allah gave them a she-camel as a clear sign and forbade them to harm her; instead, nine corrupt men plotted, and the most wretched of them hamstrung her with the people’s approval. After three days of warning, a mighty blast and earthquake destroyed them in their homes, while Salih and the believers were saved.
1. Thamud: The People Who Carved the Mountains
When the wind had swept ‘Ad from the earth, another Arab people rose to take their place. Salih (AS) would remind them of it: “And remember when He made you successors after the ‘Ad and settled you in the land, [and] you take for yourselves palaces from its plains and carve from the mountains, homes” (Al-A’raf 7:74). These were Thamud, whose lineage the genealogists trace to Thamud son of ‘Athir son of Iram son of Sam son of Nuh, making them cousins of ‘Ad; the names come from the historians, while the Quran simply calls them the successors of ‘Ad.
The Quran names their homeland al-Hijr – “the rocky tract” – and calls them “the companions of al-Hijr” (Al-Hijr 15:80). It lies in the north-west of the Arabian Peninsula on the ancient road between Madinah and Syria, in the region of today’s al-‘Ula, where the sandstone cliffs rise abruptly out of the desert. The great tombs carved into the rock there today, commonly called Mada’in Salih, are the work of the later Nabataeans; but the valley itself is the land the Quran describes, and Muslims have always associated it with Thamud, as the Prophet ﷺ himself did when he passed through it.
Their skill was stone. “And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley” (Al-Fajr 89:9). “And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:149). Where ‘Ad had raised towers on every high place, Thamud cut their houses into the living rock, as though the mountains themselves had become their fortresses. “And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure” (Al-Hijr 15:82). Security was the feeling those houses gave them: no wind, they thought, could carry away a home cut out of a mountain.
Their land was fertile. Salih listed its gifts: “Will you be left in what is here, secure, within gardens and springs, and crops and palm trees with softened fruit?” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:146–148). Wells and springs watered their valley, and their date palms were of the finest kind, with clusters so ripe and tender that the commentators said the fruit almost broke under its own softness.
But like ‘Ad they turned Allah’s gifts into a cause for pride. They worshipped idols, they followed leaders who “cause corruption in the land and do not amend” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:152), and they lived as if their stone homes would shelter them forever. Ibn Kathir notes that they had seen, or certainly heard of, what had happened to ‘Ad, their own kin, only a short time before, and yet they walked the same road.
Into this confident, prosperous and complacent society, Allah sent a man from among them. “And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih” (Al-A’raf 7:73; Hud 11:61). His very name means “the righteous one,” and by every account he had been known for righteousness long before he was given the message.
2. The Call of Salih: “You Were Our Hope”
Salih’s message was the message of Nuh and Hud: “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive” (Hud 11:61). Two phrases in that verse stand out. The first reminds them that Allah brought them out of the very earth they were so proud of carving: the rock they cut was His creation, and so were they. The second is a promise of closeness: “my Lord is near and responsive.” The God Salih called them to was not distant; He was near to anyone who turned to Him and ready to answer.
The response of his people is unique among the stories of the prophets for its note of disappointment. “They said: O Salih, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt” (Hud 11:62). “A man of promise” – marjuww – means one in whom people had placed their hopes. The commentators explain that Thamud had seen in Salih intelligence, wisdom and nobility, and had expected him to become a leader of their community. They were not shocked that a stranger had come with a new religion; they were shocked that their own brightest son had turned against the gods of their fathers.
Salih answered with the gentle reasoning of a man who would not trade his Lord for his people’s approval: “O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss” (Hud 11:63). Their hopes for him were worldly: status, leadership, influence. To follow those hopes he would have had to abandon the truth, and nothing they could give him would protect him from Allah.
In Surah Ash-Shu’ara his call takes the same form as that of the other prophets: “Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me. And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:142–145). And he named the true source of their troubles: “And do not obey the order of the transgressors, who cause corruption in the land and do not amend” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:151–152). The disease of Thamud, like that of ‘Ad, was not only belief in idols but obedience to corrupt leaders.
The chiefs replied with the familiar charges. “They said: You are only of those affected by magic. You are not but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:153–154). In Surah Al-Qamar their reasoning is spelled out: “Is a human being from among us, one individual, whom we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness. Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar” (Al-Qamar 54:24–25).
Yet Salih’s call did not fall entirely on deaf ears. A group believed, and the community split. “And We had certainly sent to Thamud their brother Salih, [saying]: Worship Allah. And at once they were two parties conflicting” (An-Naml 27:45). The arrogant chiefs turned to those whom they considered weak and who had believed, and asked mockingly: “Do you know that Salih is sent from his Lord?” The believers answered without fear: “Indeed we, in that with which he has been sent, are believers.” The arrogant said: “Indeed we, in that which you have believed, are disbelievers” (Al-A’raf 7:75–76). As with Nuh, the line ran between the proud and the humble, and as always, the humble had chosen the truth.
3. The She-Camel of Allah: A Clear Sign
Thamud demanded a sign, and Allah gave them one. “O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah – [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allah’s earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment” (Hud 11:64). She is called “the she-camel of Allah” in the same way the Ka’bah is called “the House of Allah”: not because Allah needs a camel or a house, but to mark her as belonging to Him, sacred and inviolable, so that to harm her would be to defy Him directly.
How did she appear? The Quran does not describe her origin, saying only that she was “a clear sign” (mubsirah, “giving sight”) (Al-Isra 17:59). Ibn Kathir, following the early commentators, records that the people gathered at a great rock and demanded that Salih bring forth from it a pregnant she-camel of a particular description, and that the rock split open and the camel came out before their eyes, soon giving birth to a calf. This narration is widely reported in the tafsirs and histories, but its details do not come from an authentic hadith; it may be mentioned as the account the early scholars gave, without certainty about its particulars. What is certain is that she was a miracle – unlike any ordinary camel – and that everyone in Thamud recognised her as a sign from Allah.
Along with the camel came a test. The water of their land was to be divided: “This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, on a known day” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:155). “And inform them that the water is shared between them, each turn of drinking attended” (Al-Qamar 54:28). On her day she would drink the entire well; on their day the well was theirs. The commentators report that on the day she drank she gave milk enough for the whole community; again, this is from the reports and not from the Quran, but it fits the description of her as a blessing as well as a test.
This was a test precisely fitted to Thamud. Their pride was in their property: their wells, their crops, their palms, their land. Now a creature that belonged to Allah walked freely among their fields, grazed where she wished, and on alternate days took all their water. Every day she walked among them, she reminded them that the land and the water were not truly theirs. The Quran describes Allah’s purpose: “Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them and be patient” (Al-Qamar 54:27).
Salih warned them clearly and repeatedly: “Do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:156). He reminded them of the bounties they had received: “So remember the favours of Allah and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption” (Al-A’raf 7:74).
For a time the arrangement held. The camel grazed, the water was shared, and the people of Thamud lived with a living miracle in their midst. But for the arrogant chiefs her presence was intolerable. She was a constant proof that Salih was a messenger, and every day that she remained, their claim that he was a liar became harder to sustain. Ibn Kathir notes the bitter irony: they had demanded a sign, received exactly what they demanded, and then could not bear to have it among them.
4. The Nine Conspirators and the Killing of the Camel
The Quran tells us that there were in the city “nine family heads causing corruption in the land and not amending” (An-Naml 27:48). The word used, raht, means a band or a group of chiefs; the commentators understood it as nine men, each the head of a clan. These nine became the leaders of the conspiracy, first against the camel and then against Salih himself.
One man in particular is singled out. In Surah Ash-Shams Allah says: “Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, when the most wretched of them was sent forth. And the messenger of Allah said to them: [Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink. But they denied him and hamstrung her” (Ash-Shams 91:11–14). The Prophet ﷺ described this man in a sermon: “When the most wretched of them was sent forth – a man who was mighty, wicked and powerful among his people, like Abu Zam’ah” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4942; Sahih Muslim 2855). His name, according to the commentators, was Qudar ibn Salif; the name is from the historians.
The Quran is careful to show that although one man struck the blow, the whole community bore the guilt. “But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung her” (Al-Qamar 54:29). They called him; he acted on their behalf. And so the Quran says repeatedly, “they hamstrung her” (Al-A’raf 7:77; Hud 11:65; Ash-Shu’ara 26:157; Ash-Shams 91:14), in the plural. Ibn Kathir explains that the killing was carried out by one, with the agreement of the chiefs and the consent of the people, so all of them were treated as killers. A crime that a community approves is the crime of the whole community.
The early reports add further details: that two women of Thamud, angered by the camel’s grazing on their land, offered themselves or their daughters to the men who would kill her; that the killers ambushed her on her way to the water, one shooting her with an arrow and the other striking her legs with a sword; and that her calf fled up the mountain crying out three times. These details are from the commentators and historians, drawing on sources that cannot be verified, and should be treated as reports rather than established facts.
After the killing, the arrogance of Thamud reached its peak. They went to Salih and taunted him: “O Salih, bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the messengers” (Al-A’raf 7:77). They had removed the sign and now dared the punishment. Salih gave them his final warning: “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied” (Hud 11:65).
But the nine were not content with the death of the camel. They now plotted to kill the messenger. “They said: Take a mutual oath by Allah that we will kill him by night, he and his family. Then we will say to his guardian: We did not witness the destruction of his family, and indeed, we are truthful” (An-Naml 27:49). They planned a night assassination, followed by a collective oath of innocence to escape the vengeance of Salih’s clan. Allah’s answer to their plan is one of the most striking verses in the Quran: “And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not. Then look how was the outcome of their plan – that We destroyed them and their people, all” (An-Naml 27:50–51). Ibn Kathir records reports that the plotters were crushed by a falling rock as they went out by night to carry out their plan, before the general punishment fell; this detail is from the commentators.
5. Three Days, Then the Blast
“Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days” (Hud 11:65). The commentators describe those three days as days of visible dread: on the first their faces turned pale, on the second red, on the third black. This description comes from the early reports rather than from the Quran or an authentic hadith, but the Quran itself makes clear that the punishment was announced in advance and arrived exactly as promised.
Then it came. The Quran names it in several ways, each describing a different aspect of a single overwhelming event. It was a sayhah – a mighty shout or blast: “And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes fallen prone, as if they had never prospered therein” (Hud 11:67–68). It was a rajfah – a violent trembling of the earth: “So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home fallen prone” (Al-A’raf 7:78). It was a sa’iqah – a thunderbolt: “And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn” (Fussilat 41:17). And it was a taghiyah – an event of overwhelming excess: “As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast]” (Al-Haqqah 69:5). Ibn Kathir explains that these descriptions are not contradictory: a deafening blast from the sky and a trembling of the earth beneath came together.
The homes they had carved into the mountains, in which they had felt so secure, became their tombs. They were found “fallen prone” within them, “as if they had never prospered therein.” Surah Al-Qamar gives the starkest image: “Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek, and they became like the dry twig fragments of a fence-builder” (Al-Qamar 54:31) – like the dry, crumbled brushwood that a herdsman piles up to make a pen for his animals. A people of stone became like scattered twigs.
Surah Ash-Shams describes the completeness of it: “So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. And He does not fear the consequence thereof” (Ash-Shams 91:14–15). Allah did not need to fear any retaliation or consequence; there was no one left to retaliate.
And Salih and the believers were saved. “So when Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [saved them] from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might” (Hud 11:66). “And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah” (An-Naml 27:53). The early historians report that Salih led the believers out of al-Hijr before the punishment, and that they settled elsewhere; some say in Palestine, some in Makkah, where he is said to have lived until his death. These reports are not established, and his place of burial is not known with certainty.
As Salih turned away from the ruined city, he spoke to its dead, as the Prophet ﷺ would one day speak to the dead of Quraysh at Badr: “So he turned away from them and said: O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors” (Al-A’raf 7:79). It is the voice of a man grieving for a people he had tried to save – the brother in whom they had once placed their hopes.
6. Passing Through al-Hijr: The Prophet ﷺ and the Legacy of Thamud
Centuries later, in the ninth year after the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led an army of thousands north towards Tabuk, and the road took them through al-Hijr, the land of Thamud. What he did there has been preserved in the most authentic collections, and it is the most vivid commentary we have on Salih’s story.
Abdullah ibn ‘Umar reported that the people camped at al-Hijr, drew water from its wells and kneaded dough with it. The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to pour away the water they had drawn and to feed the dough to the camels, and he commanded them to draw water only from the well from which the she-camel used to drink (Sahih al-Bukhari 3378, 3379; Sahih Muslim 2981). Fourteen centuries had not erased the distinction between the well of the camel of Allah and the wells of those who had killed her.
He also told them how to pass through such places: “Do not enter upon these people who were punished except weeping. If you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest what befell them befall you” (Sahih al-Bukhari 433, 4419; Sahih Muslim 2980). Ibn ‘Umar added that the Prophet ﷺ covered his head and hurried his mount until he had passed through the valley. The land of a punished people is not a place for sightseeing and amusement; it is a place for tears, humility and haste.
In a hadith reported by Jabir ibn Abdullah, when they passed al-Hijr the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not ask for signs. The people of Salih asked for them, and the she-camel used to come in by this path and go out by that path; then they defied the command of their Lord and hamstrung her… and a shout seized them, and Allah destroyed everyone of them beneath the sky, except one man who was in the sacred precinct (of Makkah)” – he was asked who, and said, “Abu Righal; when he left the sanctuary, what had struck his people struck him” (Musnad Ahmad 14160; graded sahih by some scholars, and with the last part discussed). The lesson the Prophet ﷺ drew was that demanding miracles is no path to faith: those who refuse to believe on the evidence they have will rarely believe when shown more.
The Quran itself makes the same point: “And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her” (Al-Isra 17:59). When the Quraysh demanded that the Prophet ﷺ turn Mount Safa to gold or bring forth springs in the desert, this verse explained why Allah did not send such signs: the pattern of Thamud showed that a demanded miracle, denied, brings immediate destruction.
Salih (AS) is named nine times in the Quran, and the story of Thamud is told or referred to in more than twenty surahs. Thamud became a byword in the Quran for a people who asked for clear proof, received it, and destroyed it. Their ruined dwellings, seen by every caravan on the road to Syria, were a lesson for the Arabs: “So those are their houses, desolate because of the wrong they had done. Indeed in that is a sign for people who know” (An-Naml 27:52).
And the voice of Salih, turning away from the city, remains with every caller to the truth: “I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors.” May the peace of Allah be upon him.
Lessons
- Security does not come from stone houses or fertile land; Thamud felt safe in homes carved from mountains, and those homes became their graves.
- Standing for the truth may cost a person the hopes and admiration of his own community, as it cost Salih; the approval of people cannot protect anyone from Allah.
- Allah is near and responsive to whoever seeks His forgiveness and turns to Him.
- Demanding miracles is no path to faith: those who reject the evidence they have rarely believe when shown more, and a denied sign brings swift punishment.
- Whatever is marked as belonging to Allah – His sanctities, His signs, His commands – must be respected; violating them is open defiance of Him.
- A crime approved by a community is the crime of the whole community; one man hamstrung the camel, but the Quran says 'they hamstrung her'.
- Corrupt leaders who 'cause corruption and do not amend' lead their people to ruin; obedience to them is a share in their guilt.
- Those who plot against Allah’s messengers are outplanned by Allah: 'They planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not.'
- The ruins of punished nations should be passed through with tears and humility, not with amusement, as the Prophet ﷺ taught at al-Hijr.
- A sincere advisor is often unwelcome; the caller’s duty is to convey and advise, even if people 'do not like advisors'.
