Verbs: Past, Present and Command افعال: ماضی، مضارع اور امر

Most Arabic verbs are built from a three-letter root. The past tense (faʿala) describes completed actions, the present (yafʿalu) ongoing or future ones, and the command (ifʿal) gives an order. The verb qala – yaqulu – qul is the best model to start with.

عربی کے اکثر افعال تین حرفی مادے سے بنتے ہیں۔ ماضی (فَعَلَ) مکمل کام، مضارع (يَفْعَلُ) جاری یا آئندہ کام، اور امر (اِفْعَلْ) حکم کے لیے آتا ہے۔ شروع کرنے کے لیے قَالَ – يَقُولُ – قُلْ بہترین مثال ہے۔

Tips

  • Past tense endings show the doer at the end: qala (he), qalat (she), qalu (they), qulna (we), qultum (you all).
  • Present tense prefixes show the doer at the start: ya- (he), ta- (you/she), a- (I), na- (we).
  • The command is made from the present: taqulu → qul, taʿbudu → uʿbud.
  • Find the three root letters to connect words: k-t-b gives kataba, kitab, maktub.
  • Qul appears over 300 times – each time Allah instructs the Prophet what to say.
