Idafah: Possession اضافت: ملکیت اور نسبت

Idafah joins two nouns to mean 'the X of Y', like 'Lord of the worlds'. The first noun never takes al- or tanween; the second noun takes the kasra ending. It is one of the most common structures in the Quran.

اضافت دو اسموں کو ملا کر 'Y کا X' کا مطلب دیتی ہے، جیسے 'تمام جہانوں کا رب'۔ پہلے اسم (مضاف) پر نہ 'الـ' آتا ہے نہ تنوین؛ دوسرا اسم (مضاف الیہ) مجرور ہوتا ہے۔ یہ قرآن کی سب سے عام ترکیبوں میں سے ہے۔

Tips

  • Read idafah as 'X of Y': rabb al-ʿalamin = Lord of the worlds.
  • The first noun has no al- and no tanween, but it is still definite in meaning.
  • The second noun always ends in -i / -in (genitive).
  • An attached pronoun is also an idafah: rabbu-ka = the Lord of you = your Lord.
  • Chains are possible: malik + yawm + ad-din.
