Sentence Types and Case Endings جملوں کی اقسام اور اعراب

A nominal sentence starts with a noun (al-hamdu lillah – praise belongs to Allah); a verbal sentence starts with a verb (khalaqa Allah – Allah created). The last vowel of a noun shows its role: -u for the subject, -a for the object, -i after a preposition or in idafah.

جملہ اسمیہ اسم سے شروع ہوتا ہے (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ – تعریف اللہ کے لیے ہے) اور جملہ فعلیہ فعل سے (خَلَقَ اللَّهُ – اللہ نے پیدا کیا)۔ اسم کی آخری حرکت اس کا کردار بتاتی ہے: پیش فاعل یا مبتدا کے لیے، زبر مفعول کے لیے، اور زیر حرفِ جار یا اضافت کے بعد۔

praise is for Allah (nominal sentence) تعریف اللہ کے لیے ہے (جملہ اسمیہ)
al-hamdu lillah
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Subject al-hamdu (-u) + predicate lillah.

مبتدا الْحَمْدُ (پیش) + خبر لِلَّهِ۔

Allah is the Eternal Refuge (nominal) اللہ بے نیاز ہے (جملہ اسمیہ)
Allahu as-samad
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

Two nouns with -u make a full sentence; 'is' is understood.

پیش والے دو اسم مل کر پورا جملہ بناتے ہیں؛ 'ہے' خود سمجھا جاتا ہے۔

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (nominal) محمد اللہ کے رسول ہیں (جملہ اسمیہ)
Muhammadun rasulu Allah
مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِ

Subject + idafah as the predicate.

مبتدا + خبر (اضافت کی صورت میں)۔

Allah created the heavens (verbal sentence) اللہ نے آسمان پیدا کیے (جملہ فعلیہ)
khalaqa Allahu as-samawat
خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ

Verb + doer Allahu (-u) + object. Feminine plural objects take -i instead of -a.

فعل + فاعل اللَّهُ (پیش) + مفعول۔ جمع مؤنث سالم کا نصب زیر سے ہوتا ہے۔

Allah has sealed their hearts (verbal) اللہ نے ان کے دلوں پر مہر لگا دی (جملہ فعلیہ)
khatama Allahu ʿala qulubihim
خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ

Verb, doer, then a prepositional phrase.

فعل، فاعل، پھر جار مجرور۔

He taught Adam the names اس نے آدم کو نام سکھائے
ʿallama Adama al-asma'a
عَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ

Two objects, both with -a (accusative).

دو مفعول، دونوں منصوب (زبر)۔

indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful بے شک اللہ بخشنے والا مہربان ہے
inna Allaha ghafurun rahim
إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Inna changes the subject to -a: Allahu → Allaha.

إِنَّ کے بعد مبتدا منصوب ہو جاتا ہے: اللَّهُ ← اللَّهَ۔

Allah is ever Knowing and Wise اللہ علم والا حکمت والا ہے
kana Allahu ʿaliman hakima
كَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

Kana changes the predicate to -a / -an.

كَانَ کے بعد خبر منصوب ہو جاتی ہے۔

in the name of Allah اللہ کے نام سے
bismi Allahi
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Genitive -i: ism after bi-, Allah as the second noun of idafah.

مجرور: بِـ کے بعد اسم، اور اللہ مضاف الیہ۔

the three cases of the same word ایک ہی لفظ کی تین حالتیں
Allahu / Allaha / Allahi
اللَّهُ / اللَّهَ / اللَّهِ

-u subject (nominative), -a object or after inna (accusative), -i after a preposition (genitive).

پیش: رفع (فاعل/مبتدا)، زبر: نصب (مفعول یا إِنَّ کے بعد)، زیر: جر (حرفِ جار کے بعد)۔

Tips

  • Nominal sentences describe a state or truth; verbal sentences describe an action.
  • 'Is/are' is not written in Arabic present-tense nominal sentences.
  • Subject and doer: -u. Object: -a. After prepositions and in idafah: -i.
  • Inna and its sisters make the subject -a; kana and its sisters make the predicate -a.
  • In a verbal sentence the verb often stays singular even with a plural doer.
