Harun (AS) was the elder brother of Musa (AS), made a prophet in answer to his brother's prayer so that he could be his minister and spokesman before Pharaoh. Eloquent, gentle and beloved by the Children of Israel, he stood with Musa through the confrontation with Pharaoh and the Exodus. When Musa went up Sinai for forty nights, Harun was left in charge and faced the crisis of the Golden Calf, warning the people but holding back from a split that might have destroyed them. He died in the wilderness before his brother, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ later compared Ali's place in relation to himself to Harun's place in relation to Musa.
1. The Elder Brother
Harun (AS) was born in Egypt to the same parents as Musa, of the tribe of Levi, among the Children of Israel who lived as slaves under Pharaoh. The Quran calls him Musa's brother repeatedly, and once records Harun himself addressing Musa as 'O son of my mother' (Ta-Ha 20:94; Al-A'raf 7:150) – a phrase of tenderness, appealing to the bond of the womb. Ibn Kathir reports that Harun was the elder of the two, by about three years according to the People of the Book.
How did Harun survive when Pharaoh was killing the newborn sons of Israel? The commentators report that the killing was carried out in alternate years, so that Pharaoh's labour force would not be wiped out; Harun was born in a year of respite and Musa in a year of slaughter. This explanation comes from tafsir reports and Isra'iliyyat and is not stated in the Quran or authentic hadith. It is a plausible account, but the reader should hold it lightly. What the Quran tells us is only that Musa had to be hidden, while nothing is said of any danger to Harun.
So Harun grew up among his own people while his younger brother grew up in Pharaoh's palace. When Musa killed the Egyptian and fled to Madyan, Harun remained in Egypt, sharing the hardships of the Children of Israel for the ten or more years of his brother's absence. He was known among them, trusted by them, and – as later events show – loved by them more easily than his sterner brother.
The Quran gives us the clearest picture of Harun's gifts through the words of Musa himself. When Allah commanded Musa to go to Pharaoh, Musa said: 'And my brother Harun is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me. Indeed, I fear that they will deny me' (Al-Qasas 28:34). Musa had a 'knot' in his tongue (Ta-Ha 20:27); Harun had eloquence. Musa was the man of strength and force; Harun was the man of persuasion and gentleness. Together they made one complete messenger for one of the hardest missions in history.
It is worth pausing on what this tells us about Musa as well. A lesser man might have wanted the mission for himself alone. Musa asked Allah to share it with his brother and to raise his brother's rank: 'And appoint for me a minister from my family – Harun, my brother. Increase through him my strength and let him share my task' (Ta-Ha 20:29-32). Aishah (RA) is reported to have said that she knew of no brother who brought greater benefit to his brother than Musa did when he asked prophethood for Harun. Allah answered: 'And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Harun as a prophet' (Maryam 19:53).
Harun thus became a prophet not by his own petition but by his brother's love. He is listed in the Quran among the great prophets who received revelation (An-Nisa 4:163) and among the descendants of Ibrahim whom Allah guided (Al-An'am 6:84). His prophethood was real and independent – he received revelation, he was addressed by Allah together with Musa – even though in the mission to Pharaoh and the leadership of Israel he served as Musa's minister and deputy.
2. Minister Before Pharaoh
When Allah granted Musa's request at Tuwa, the command thereafter was addressed to both brothers together. 'Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not slacken in My remembrance. Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]' (Ta-Ha 20:42-44). The two of them answered as one: 'Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress.' And Allah reassured them as one: 'Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see' (Ta-Ha 20:45-46).
The commentators say that Allah inspired Harun in Egypt to go out and meet his brother as Musa returned from Madyan. Whether or not the meeting happened exactly so, the Quran shows them entering Pharaoh's court together: 'So go to him and say, "Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them"' (Ta-Ha 20:47). In Surah Ash-Shu'ara the dual form is kept throughout: 'Go both of you with Our signs… and say, "We are the messenger of the Lord of the worlds"' (Ash-Shu'ara 26:15-16). The single word 'messenger' for two men is noted by the commentators: they carried one message and spoke with one voice.
What role did Harun play in the debates? The Quran mostly records Musa's words, but it presents Harun as present and as a full participant in the mission. Pharaoh addressed them both: 'So who is the Lord of you two, O Musa?' (Ta-Ha 20:49). His chiefs accused them both: 'These are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic' (Ta-Ha 20:63). And the magicians, when they fell in prostration, declared: 'We have believed in the Lord of Harun and Musa' (Ta-Ha 20:70) – naming Harun first in Surah Ta-Ha, and 'the Lord of Musa and Harun' in Al-A'raf and Ash-Shu'ara. His eloquence had a share in the call that brought them to faith.
Harun was also with Musa in the prayer that sealed Pharaoh's fate. Musa prayed that Allah would harden the hearts of Pharaoh and his chiefs, and Allah answered both of them: 'Your supplication has been answered. So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know' (Yunus 10:89). The commentators explain that Musa supplicated and Harun said 'Amin', and Allah counted the one who said 'Amin' as a supplicant too – a point from which the scholars derive the virtue of saying 'Amin' to another's prayer.
Before the Exodus, Allah gave the two brothers a joint command for the community: 'And We inspired to Musa and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses [facing the] qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers"' (Yunus 10:87). In the years of the plagues, when open worship was dangerous, the brothers organised the Children of Israel into a hidden, praying community. Harun the gentle was well suited to this pastoral work.
Then came the night of departure and the morning at the sea. The Quran does not single Harun out in the account of the crossing, but he was with his brother and his people when the sea parted, and Allah lists him in the blessing: 'And We certainly conferred favour upon Musa and Harun. And We saved them and their people from the great affliction, and supported them so that it was they who overcame' (As-Saffat 37:114-116). From Egypt to the far shore, the two brothers stood together.
3. The Deputy and the Golden Calf
The defining test of Harun's life came when Musa went up Mount Sinai for the forty nights. Before leaving, Musa said to him: 'Take my place among my people, do right, and do not follow the way of the corrupters' (Al-A'raf 7:142). For the first time, Harun was alone at the head of a nation only recently freed from slavery, which had already asked for an idol on the road out of Egypt (Al-A'raf 7:138).
While Musa was away, as-Samiri made the calf of gold, and the people began to worship it. Harun did not keep silent. The Quran records his warning in full: 'O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order' (Ta-Ha 20:90). In one sentence he named the calf as a trial, reminded them of the mercy of the true Lord, and claimed his authority as their leader. Their answer was flat refusal: 'We will never cease being devoted to it until Musa returns to us' (Ta-Ha 20:91). And when he pressed further, they turned on him: 'Indeed, the people oppressed me and were about to kill me' (Al-A'raf 7:150).
What should he have done next? Here the Quran shows us Harun's reasoning, and it is one of the most important lessons in leadership in the Book. He had two choices. He could take the minority who remained faithful and separate from the worshippers, perhaps leave the camp to follow Musa to the mountain, or fight them. Or he could stay with the whole people, keep warning, prevent bloodshed, and hold them together until Musa returned. He chose the second. When Musa returned and seized him, he explained: 'Indeed, I feared that you would say, "You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe my word"' (Ta-Ha 20:94).
The scholars discuss this choice at length. Harun judged that a civil war among the Israelites, or the splitting of the nation into two camps in the wilderness, would have been a greater harm than tolerating the error for the few days until Musa came back with the authority to deal with it. He did not approve the calf; he denounced it publicly at the risk of his life. But he did not take a step that was not his to take. He understood that he was a deputy, and that the decisive judgement belonged to the leader Allah had appointed.
Musa's anger when he came down was intense. 'He threw down the Tablets and seized his brother by [the hair of] his head, pulling him toward him' (Al-A'raf 7:150). Harun's reply is full of gentleness: 'O son of my mother, indeed the people oppressed me and were about to kill me, so let not the enemies rejoice over me and do not place me among the wrongdoing people' (Al-A'raf 7:150). He did not defend himself with anger, nor accuse his brother of injustice. He appealed to kinship, explained his position, and asked not to be counted with the guilty.
The appeal worked at once. Musa's anger subsided and he prayed: 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful' (Al-A'raf 7:151). He asked forgiveness for himself first, for his haste, and included his brother. The Quran thus clears Harun entirely: he is never blamed by Allah for the calf; the blame falls on as-Samiri and on those who worshipped it. The tales in some earlier scriptures that make Aaron himself the maker of the calf are rejected by the Quran, which names as-Samiri as the culprit (Ta-Ha 20:85, 95-97), and Muslim scholars hold that a prophet of Allah could never have made an idol.
4. Death in the Wilderness
After the crisis of the calf, Harun continued at his brother's side through the long years of wandering in Sinai. The Quran includes him in the description of the Torah: 'And We had already given Musa and Harun the criterion and a light and a reminder for the righteous' (Al-Anbiya 21:48). And in Surah As-Saffat: 'And We gave them the explicit Scripture, and We guided them on the straight path' (As-Saffat 37:117-118). The Law of Musa was in a real sense the shared trust of both brothers, and the priesthood of the Children of Israel, according to the earlier scriptures and the historians cited by Ibn Kathir, remained in the descendants of Harun for generations.
When Musa prayed, at the border of the Holy Land, against the people who refused to enter it, he named only one other person as standing with him: 'My Lord, indeed I do not possess except myself and my brother, so part us from the defiantly disobedient people' (Al-Ma'idah 5:25). After everything, Harun was the one man Musa could count on absolutely.
Harun died during the forty years of wandering, before his brother. The Quran does not narrate his death, and there is no authentic hadith describing it. Ibn Kathir reports from the People of the Book and some early Muslim narrators that Musa and Harun went up a mountain together, that Harun died there, and that Musa buried him and came down alone. Some reports add that the Israelites accused Musa of killing his brother out of envy for the people's love of him, until Allah caused the angels to carry Harun's body before them so that they saw he had died naturally. These reports are not established and should not be told as fact. Traditionally, a mountain near Petra in southern Jordan, known as Jabal Harun, has been associated with his grave, and a shrine stands there; the identification is a matter of tradition, not of verified knowledge.
Some commentators connect a verse of the Quran to these accusations against Musa: 'O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Musa; then Allah cleared him of what they said' (Al-Ahzab 33:69). However, the authentic explanation of this verse given by the Prophet ﷺ concerns a different matter – the Israelites' claim that Musa had a bodily defect because he bathed covered, until Allah exposed their error (Sahih al-Bukhari 3404). The story connected to Harun's death is a secondary, weaker interpretation.
What the Quran does establish is the peace Allah bestowed on him. After telling the story of the two brothers in Surah As-Saffat, Allah says: 'And We left for them [favourable mention] among later generations: "Peace upon Musa and Harun." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, they were of Our believing servants' (As-Saffat 37:119-122). Harun's name is joined with his brother's in this blessing until the end of time.
The Prophet ﷺ met Harun on the Night Journey. In the hadith of the Mi'raj, he said that in the fifth heaven he found Harun, who welcomed him: 'Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207, 3887; Sahih Muslim 162). In some narrations the Prophet ﷺ described him as having a long beard, half of it white. The welcome is the same one given by the other prophets, and it places Harun in the company of the honoured messengers of the heavens.
5. "As Harun Was to Musa": His Legacy’
Harun's place in Islamic memory is captured in one famous hadith. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ set out for the campaign of Tabuk, he left Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) behind in Madinah to look after his family. Ali was distressed and said: 'Are you leaving me behind with the women and children?' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Are you not pleased to be to me in the position of Harun to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4416; Sahih Muslim 2404). The comparison was an honour for Ali, and it tells us how the Prophet ﷺ saw Harun: the beloved brother and deputy, trusted to look after the people while the leader was away.
The phrase 'except that there is no prophet after me' also clarifies something about Harun. He was not merely a minister; he was a prophet in his own right, which is precisely why the Prophet ﷺ had to make the exception. Ali would share Harun's role of trusted deputy and kinsman, but not his rank of prophethood, because prophethood ended with Muhammad ﷺ.
Harun's name was also known in a surprising context. When Maryam (AS) came to her people carrying the infant Isa, they said: 'O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste' (Maryam 19:28). When the Christians of Najran asked the companion al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah how Maryam could be called Harun's sister when Musa and Harun lived centuries before Isa, he took the question to the Prophet ﷺ, who explained: 'They used to name [people] after the prophets and righteous people who came before them' (Sahih Muslim 2135). Maryam was descended from the priestly house of Harun, or had a brother named after him; either way, his name was a mark of piety in Israel a thousand years after his death.
What, then, are the lessons of Harun's life? The first is that greatness does not always mean being first. Harun spent his prophethood as the second of two, speaking for his brother, deputising for him, and accepting his brother's leadership even when he was the elder. There was no rivalry between them, only a partnership blessed by Allah.
The second is the wisdom of preserving unity. In the crisis of the calf Harun spoke the truth openly, but he weighed the greater harm and chose to hold the community together rather than split it. Scholars across the centuries have cited his words – 'I feared that you would say, "You caused division among the Children of Israel"' – as a principle for leaders who must choose between two harms.
The third is gentleness under provocation. Harun met an idolatrous mob with reminders of Allah's mercy, and met his brother's rough anger with 'O son of my mother'. His soft answer turned away wrath and brought forth a prayer for forgiveness for both of them.
The fourth is the beauty of brotherhood in faith. Musa asked Allah to make his brother a prophet, and Harun spent his life supporting that mission. When Musa prayed, Harun said 'Amin', and Allah counted them as praying together. Few relationships in the Quran are described with such warmth.
Lessons
- Greatness does not require being first; Harun served faithfully as his brother's minister though he was the elder.
- Brotherhood in faith is a blessing: Musa's love made his brother a prophet (Maryam 19:53).
- Eloquence is a gift to be used in Allah's service, as Harun's speech supported his brother's message (Al-Qasas 28:34).
- Saying 'Amin' to another's supplication is itself a share in the prayer (Yunus 10:89).
- When facing wrongdoing, speak the truth openly, as Harun did: 'You are only being tested by it' (Ta-Ha 20:90).
- A leader may have to weigh two harms; preserving the unity of the community can be the lesser evil until proper authority acts (Ta-Ha 20:94).
- A deputy should not overstep the authority entrusted to him.
- Answer anger with gentleness and an appeal to kinship: 'O son of my mother' (Al-A'raf 7:150).
- The Quran clears Harun of making the calf; prophets are protected from idolatry.
- The Prophet ﷺ honoured Ali by comparing him to Harun, showing the rank of a trusted helper (Bukhari 4416).
