Eating out and travelling in a non-Muslim country can feel difficult, but with a few habits it becomes easy: knowing what to order, how to ask, how to use halal apps and airline meals, and what the Shariah allows when nothing halal is available.
Restaurants. A restaurant that displays a certificate from a recognised halal body, or is run by practising Muslims who tell you their meat is halal, can be relied on; the Prophet ﷺ told the Companions who were unsure about meat brought by others to say Bismillah and eat (Sahih al-Bukhari 5507). Do not interrogate a Muslim host or shopkeeper without reason. In a non-halal restaurant, vegetarian, vegan and fish dishes are usually permissible; ask three questions: is there wine, beer or mirin in the sauce; is the dish cooked in animal fat or stock; and is the fish or chips fried in the same oil as pork or non-halal meat. Pizza chains: plain cheese and vegetable pizzas are generally fine, though some bases contain L-cysteine and pepperoni is pork. Burger and chicken chains: in the UK, some branches of major chains serve halal chicken; in North America most do not, so choose fish or vegetarian options and check the fryer. Many chains publish allergen and ingredient guides online that list gelatin, wine and pork.
Halal apps and websites. Apps such as Zabihah, HalalTrip, Scan Halal and local certifier directories list restaurants and products by country. Treat user reviews as helpful but not decisive; look for a named certifier. Many supermarket chains (for example in the UK, France, Germany, Canada and Australia) stock certified halal meat and frozen meals.
Airlines and hotels. Order a Muslim meal (IATA code MOML) when you book or at least 24 to 48 hours before departure. Airlines from Muslim countries serve halal food on all flights. Hotel breakfasts: eggs, bread, cheese, fruit, cereal, yoghurt and pastries are usually fine; avoid sausages, bacon, ham and cold cuts unless labelled halal, and watch for gelatin in fruit jellies and yoghurts.
Travelling in Asia. In Japan, Korea, China and Thailand, pork and alcohol (mirin, cooking wine) are widespread; seek Muslim-friendly restaurant lists. In Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore look for JAKIM, MUI, MUIS or the local halal logo. In India, many restaurants are vegetarian, which simplifies things, but check for alcohol.
When nothing halal is available. If you can find vegetarian food, bread, fruit, fish or eggs, you must eat those instead of non-halal meat. Necessity (darurah) applies only when you face real hunger with no lawful alternative: "But whoever is forced by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing, there is no sin upon him. Indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" (2:173; see also 5:3 and 6:119). In that case one may eat what is needed to remove the danger, not to feast. Being in a hurry or preferring meat is not necessity.
Meat of the People of the Book abroad. As explained in the meat article, kosher meat is lawful under 5:5. In countries where Christians do not slaughter religiously, the majority of scholars do not regard ordinary restaurant meat as halal. Some scholars have allowed it on the basis of 5:5, but the cautious and more widely held view is to avoid it.
