Prophet Yunus (AS) – The Companion of the Whale

Nineveh (near Mosul, in present-day Iraq) – after the prophets of the divided kingdom of Israel

Yunus ibn Matta (AS) was sent to the great city of Nineveh, whose people rejected him until he left them in anger before Allah had given him leave. He boarded a ship, was cast into the sea by lot, and was swallowed by a whale. In the darkness of its belly he called out, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers,' and Allah saved him. Meanwhile his people, seeing the signs of punishment, repented together, and theirs is the only city in the Quran whose faith averted a decreed torment. His prayer became the supplication by which every distressed believer is answered.

1. The Prophet of Nineveh

Yunus is named four times in the Quran, and a fifth time by a title that has become his own: Dhun-Nun, the Companion of the Fish, and once more as Sahib al-Hut, the Companion of the Whale. An entire surah, the tenth, bears his name. The Prophet ﷺ gave his full name: 'Yunus ibn Matta' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3413), and in that hadith the name Matta is his father's, though a few commentators have suggested it was his mother's; the hadith settles the matter in favour of the father.

The Quran says of his mission: 'And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more' (As-Saffat 37:147). The commentators, following Ibn Abbas and the historians, say that these were the people of Nineveh, the great Assyrian city on the eastern bank of the Tigris opposite present-day Mosul in northern Iraq. Nineveh was one of the largest cities of the ancient world, the capital of an empire that had conquered the northern kingdom of the Children of Israel and carried its tribes into exile. That Allah sent a prophet from among the Israelites to the capital of their conquerors is one of the remarkable features of his story, and it shows that the mercy of Allah is not confined to one nation.

The expression 'a hundred thousand or more' has been discussed by the scholars. Ibn Kathir notes that the 'or' here does not express doubt on Allah's part; it means 'rather, more,' and the reports from the Companions and Successors give the number as a hundred and ten, a hundred and twenty, or a hundred and thirty thousand. The point is the magnitude: Yunus was sent to one of the largest populations any single prophet had ever addressed.

The people of Nineveh were idolaters. The historians describe them as worshipping the gods of Assyria, and the Quran in Surah Yunus summarises Yunus's call to them in a single clause: they had been warned of a punishment. 'Then has there not been a single city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time' (Yunus 10:98). This verse, which is the climax of his story, tells us that his message to them was the universal message: worship Allah alone, or a punishment will come upon you.

The Quran does not narrate the details of his preaching, how long it lasted, or how exactly they answered him. The historians say that he called them for a long time and that they refused and mocked him, and that at last he was commanded to warn them that the punishment would descend upon them in three days (some say forty). What the Quran does tell us is what happened next, and it is told in a way that no other prophet's story is told: the focus falls not on the people's sin but on the prophet's own trial.

The Quran describes the beginning of this trial in Surah Al-Anbiya: 'And remember Dhun-Nun, when he went off in anger' (Al-Anbiya 21:87). From this moment the story of Yunus becomes the story of a man in the sea, in the dark, learning that there is no refuge from Allah except with Him.

2. He Went Off in Anger

'And remember Dhun-Nun, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree anything upon him' (Al-Anbiya 21:87). The Quran describes the fault of Yunus in these few words, and the scholars have been careful in explaining them, because they concern a prophet whom Allah honoured and whom the Prophet ﷺ forbade anyone to disparage.

Yunus had called his people and they had refused. According to the commentators, he had warned them of the coming punishment and then left the city before the appointed time, angry at their disbelief and, in the view of most scholars, before Allah had given him permission to leave. A prophet does not abandon his post without the command of his Lord. Musa remained with Pharaoh's people; Nuh remained with his for nine hundred and fifty years. Yunus departed, not out of fear or weakness, but out of anger at a people who would not listen, and the Quran names that anger as the beginning of his trial.

The words 'and thought that We would not decree anything upon him' have been understood in two ways. The majority read the verb (naqdira) in the sense of 'to constrain' or 'to restrict,' as in the verse 'Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts it' (Ar-Rad 13:26): Yunus thought that Allah would not constrain him or bring hardship upon him for leaving. Others read it in the sense of 'to decree.' What is not permissible is to understand it as meaning that Yunus thought Allah had no power over him; such a thought is disbelief and is unthinkable in a prophet. Ibn Kathir and the scholars of aqidah are unanimous on this.

The Quran is also clear that this fault, whatever its exact nature, did not expel him from the ranks of the messengers. In Surah As-Saffat, the account begins: 'And indeed, Yunus was among the messengers' (As-Saffat 37:139), and only then: 'when he ran away to the laden ship' (As-Saffat 37:140). The Arabic verb abaqa is the word used for a slave who flees from his master. Yunus is called, with tenderness rather than reproach, a runaway servant. He fled from his assignment, and he would learn that there is nowhere to flee from Allah except back to Him.

The Prophet ﷺ protected the honour of Yunus in words that every Muslim should know. He said: 'No one should say that I am better than Yunus ibn Matta' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3416; Sahih Muslim 2376), and in another narration, 'Whoever says I am better than Yunus ibn Matta has lied' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4604). The scholars explain this in several ways: that the Prophet ﷺ was forbidding boastful comparison between prophets; that he was defending Yunus specifically, since the trial of the whale might lead people to think less of him; and that he was teaching that a prophet's momentary lapse does not lower his rank, for Allah had forgiven it and chosen him again. If the Prophet ﷺ forbade even himself to claim superiority over Yunus, no one else has the right to speak of Yunus except with reverence.

So Yunus walked from Nineveh to the coast, and there he found a ship loading cargo and passengers. He boarded it. He did not know that the sea into which he was sailing would be the place where Allah would bring him back.

3. The Ship, the Lot and the Whale

'When he ran away to the laden ship, and he drew lots and was among the losers; then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy' (As-Saffat 37:140-142). Three verses carry Yunus from the deck of a ship into the belly of a whale, and each verse contains a judgement.

The ship was 'laden,' full of people and cargo. The commentators relate that once it had put out to sea, it was struck by a storm, or that it stopped and would not move, and that the sailors concluded, according to the custom of the time, that there was a runaway slave aboard whose presence was the cause. They cast lots to find him. The Quran says 'he drew lots,' using the verb for a lottery of arrows (sahama), and the name of Yunus came out. The reports say that the lot was cast three times and fell on him each time, and that he then declared himself to be the runaway servant and was cast into the sea, or threw himself in. The Quran says only that 'he was among the losers,' those whom the lot condemned, and that the fish then swallowed him.

The phrase 'while he was blameworthy' (mulim) has been explained by the scholars as meaning that he had done something for which he blamed himself, not that he was a sinner in the sense of a wrongdoer against Allah's command of a major kind. The Arabic distinguishes between one who is blamed (malum) and one who has done something deserving of self-reproach (mulim). Yunus belonged to the second category. He had left his post in anger and he knew it, and he accepted the lot without protest because he recognised in it the hand of Allah.

The creature that swallowed him is called in the Quran al-hut, the great fish. In English it is usually rendered 'whale,' and the Quran gives no description of its size or species. Allah had commanded it, as the reports say, not to harm him: 'Do not eat his flesh and do not break his bones,' though this wording is from the commentators and not from a hadith. What the Quran states is the central fact: the fish swallowed him and he remained alive inside it.

There he found himself in what the Quran calls 'the darknesses': 'And he called out within the darknesses' (Al-Anbiya 21:87). The commentators enumerate them: the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the belly of the fish. Some add the darkness of the sea's depths, for the fish dived with him. No human being before or since has prayed from such a place. Yunus had gone off in anger thinking that Allah would not constrain him, and now he was constrained in the narrowest prison on earth, in a darkness in which nothing could be seen and nothing could be done.

The Quran does not say how long he remained there. The reports range from a few hours to three days to forty, and none is established; the number is not important. What matters is what he did in that time, and the Quran turns to that immediately. Of all the places from which a man might despair, the belly of a whale in the depths of the sea at night is the most hopeless, and it was from there that Yunus spoke the words that have become the most famous supplication of distress in the history of the world.

4. The Call from the Darknesses

'And he called out within the darknesses: There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers' (Al-Anbiya 21:87). The Arabic is twelve words: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min az-zalimin. In them is a complete theology and a complete repentance.

The first part is tawhid: 'There is no deity except You.' In the belly of the whale, Yunus did not ask for rescue first; he declared the oneness of Allah first. He affirmed that no one else could help him, that no one else was worthy of being called upon, that the sea and the fish and the darkness were all in the hand of One. The second part is tanzih, glorification: 'Exalted are You.' Whatever had happened to him, Allah was free of any injustice; the fault was not in the decree but in the servant. The third part is confession: 'Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' No excuse, no explanation, no mention of the stubbornness of Nineveh. He placed himself among the wrongdoers and left the rest to his Lord.

The Quran describes what happened next in words that have comforted every believer who has read them: 'So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers' (Al-Anbiya 21:88). The rescue of Yunus is presented not as a special case but as a law: 'thus do We save the believers.' Whoever calls on Allah as Yunus called on Him can expect what Yunus received.

The Prophet ﷺ made this explicit. Sad ibn Abi Waqqas narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The supplication of Dhun-Nun when he called out while in the belly of the whale: There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers. No Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything except that Allah answers him' (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3505; graded sahih by al-Albani and others; also in Musnad Ahmad). This hadith has made the prayer of Yunus one of the most frequently recited supplications in the Muslim world. It is said in illness, in debt, in grief, in fear, in every form of distress, and its power lies in its content: it asks for nothing and affirms everything, and Allah answers it because it is the prayer of a servant who has understood his position.

Surah As-Saffat adds a detail that explains why Yunus was answered. 'And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected' (As-Saffat 37:143-144). The phrase 'those who exalt Allah' (al-musabbihin) is understood in two ways, and both are true. The first is that his tasbih inside the whale, his 'exalted are You,' was the means of his deliverance. The second, reported from Ibn Abbas and others, is that he had been a man of much worship and remembrance before his trial, and that Allah remembered him in his distress because he had remembered Allah in his ease. The Prophet ﷺ expressed this as a general principle: 'Know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship' (Musnad Ahmad; Jami at-Tirmidhi 2516, in the long hadith of Ibn Abbas).

The whale, as the verse says, could have been his tomb until the Day of Resurrection. The One who kept him alive inside it was the One he had fled from. In the darkness he discovered what every believer eventually learns: that the only escape from Allah is to Allah, and that the moment a servant says 'I have been of the wrongdoers' with a true heart, the door that seemed sealed opens.

5. The Shore, the Gourd and the Return

'But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine' (As-Saffat 37:145-146). The whale brought Yunus to land and cast him out on a bare shore, al-ara, an empty place with no tree or shelter. The commentators describe his condition: his skin had been softened by the digestive heat of the fish so that he was like a newborn chick, unable to bear the touch of the sun or the wind. The Quran says simply that he was 'ill,' saqim.

Allah's care for him did not end with his rescue. 'We caused to grow over him a gourd vine,' yaqtin. The scholars identify this with the gourd or pumpkin plant, whose broad leaves grow quickly, shade well and are not settled upon by flies. The Prophet ﷺ himself loved gourd, as Anas narrated: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ searching for gourd around the edges of the dish, and I have loved gourd ever since' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5379). Under this vine Yunus recovered, sheltered from the sun, and the reports add that a wild goat came to him and he drank its milk, though this detail is not from a sound hadith.

The picture of the prophet lying weak under a plant that Allah had grown for him is deliberately humble. The man who had been sent to a hundred thousand was now helpless, and the Lord who had rescued him from the sea now rescued him from the sun. Every stage of his story shows the same thing: that he was entirely in the hand of Allah, in the city, on the ship, in the whale and on the shore.

When he was well, he was sent back. 'And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more, and they believed, so We gave them enjoyment of life for a time' (As-Saffat 37:147-148). The commentators differ on whether this means that Allah sent him to Nineveh a second time or whether the verse simply recapitulates his original mission; but the outcome is the same in either case. He returned to the city he had left in anger, and he found it transformed.

In the verses of Surah Al-Qalam, Allah addresses the Prophet ﷺ himself with the example of Yunus. The Makkan disbelievers were mocking him and rejecting the Quran, and Allah said: 'Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed. If not that a favour from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured. And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous' (Al-Qalam 68:48-50). The Prophet ﷺ was told not to leave his people as Yunus had left his. But the same verses honour Yunus: the favour of his Lord overtook him; he was not left on the shore censured; his Lord chose him, ijtabahu, the same word used for the election of prophets, and made him among the righteous.

The lesson is complete. Yunus had fled from the task; Allah brought him back to it. He had thought he would not be constrained; he was constrained and then released. His moment of anger had become, through his prayer in the darkness, the occasion of his being chosen again. 'And his Lord chose him' is the last word of the Quran on the trial of Yunus, and it tells us that the trial did not diminish him but was the road to his honour.

6. The City That Believed

While Yunus was in the sea, something happened in Nineveh that had never happened before and that the Quran singles out as unique in the history of nations. 'Then has there not been a single city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time' (Yunus 10:98).

The commentators, following Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Qatadah and others, describe what took place. After Yunus had left, the signs of the promised punishment began to appear. A dark cloud of smoke covered the sky, or the sky turned the colour of fire, and the people realised that what their prophet had warned of was true. They searched for Yunus and could not find him. Then they did what no other people had done in the face of punishment: they repented together. They went out into the open country, men, women and children, with their animals; they separated the mothers from their young so that the crying of the beasts would rise with the crying of the people; they put on sackcloth, prostrated, wept and called upon Allah with sincerity, declaring their faith and begging Him to lift the punishment. And Allah accepted. The cloud withdrew, the sky cleared and the city was spared.

The details of the sackcloth and the separated animals come from the historians and are not from a sound hadith; they should be read as the way the early narrators understood the event rather than as established fact. The Quran itself gives three certainties: the people believed, their faith was accepted, and the punishment was removed. These three facts are enough to make Nineveh unique.

Why unique? Because the law of Allah with other nations had been otherwise. 'But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment' (Ghafir 40:85). Pharaoh declared his faith as he drowned and was told, 'Now? And you had disobeyed before' (Yunus 10:91). The people of Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut and Shuayb all saw the signs of punishment and were destroyed. Faith at the moment of seeing the torment is normally rejected, because it is not faith in the unseen but surrender to the seen. The people of Yunus were the exception. The scholars explain that their repentance came when the punishment was approaching but had not yet descended, while the door was still open, and that it was sincere and complete. Allah knew the truth of their hearts and spared them.

The verse ends with 'and gave them enjoyment for a time.' Their reprieve was not eternal; no nation's is. They lived out their appointed term in the mercy of Allah, and the historians record that generations later Nineveh fell to other conquerors, as every city falls. But the generation that repented with Yunus received what no other generation received, and their story is placed in the Quran as a lesson for the Makkans who were hearing it: the door is open now, before the punishment comes, and whoever enters it will be received.

When Yunus returned and found his city believing, his story came full circle. He had left because they would not believe; he came back to a people whose faith had been accepted. The anger that had taken him to the sea was answered by the mercy that had saved the city, and the Quran concludes: 'and they believed, so We gave them enjoyment of life for a time' (As-Saffat 37:148).

During the hardest period of his mission, at Taif, the Prophet ﷺ asked a Christian servant named Addas where he was from, and when Addas said Nineveh, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'The town of the righteous man Yunus ibn Matta' (reported in the Sirah of Ibn Ishaq; the chain is discussed by the scholars). Whether or not that particular report is established, the Prophet ﷺ in the sound hadiths called him 'Yunus ibn Matta' with the respect due to a brother, and told his ummah never to claim superiority over him. The companion of the whale, the runaway servant, the man who prayed from the darknesses, is to be spoken of only as Allah speaks of him: 'His Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.'

Lessons

  • The prayer of Yunus, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers,' is answered for any Muslim who calls with it (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3505).
  • There is no fleeing from Allah except to Allah; every road away from Him leads back to His door.
  • A caller to Allah must not abandon his people in anger before Allah gives him leave (Al-Qalam 68:48).
  • Allah saves the believers in distress as He saved Yunus: 'And thus do We save the believers' (Al-Anbiya 21:88).
  • Remember Allah in ease and He will remember you in hardship; Yunus was saved because he 'was of those who exalt Allah' (As-Saffat 37:143-144).
  • Sincere repentance before the punishment descends can avert it even for a whole nation, as it did for the people of Nineveh (Yunus 10:98).
  • A prophet's momentary lapse does not diminish his rank; the Prophet ﷺ forbade anyone to say he was better than Yunus ibn Matta (Sahih al-Bukhari 3416).
  • Allah's care continues after rescue: the gourd vine on the shore teaches that He heals as well as saves.
  • No excuse is needed in repentance; Yunus confessed 'I have been of the wrongdoers' and said nothing of his people's stubbornness.
  • Allah's mercy is not limited to one nation; a prophet of the Israelites was sent to the capital of their conquerors, and they were saved.
