Prophet Yahya (AS) – Pure from Childhood

Palestine (Bayt al-Maqdis) – shortly before and alongside Isa; 1st century CE

Yahya (AS), known to Christians as John the Baptist, was the miracle son granted to the aged Zakariya (AS) in answer to a whispered prayer. Allah Himself chose his name, gave him wisdom while he was still a boy, and made him tender, pure, dutiful to his parents and free of arrogance. He confirmed the coming of Isa (AS), called the Children of Israel to tawhid, prayer, fasting, charity and remembrance, and was unjustly killed by his own people. Allah greeted him with peace on the day he was born, the day he dies and the day he will be raised.

1. A Prayer Whispered in Old Age

The story of Yahya (AS) begins before he was born, in the prayer-niche of an old man. Zakariya (AS) was a prophet of the Children of Israel who served in the sanctuary at Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). The Prophet ﷺ told us that Zakariya was a carpenter who worked with his own hands (Sahih Muslim 2379). He had grown old; his bones had weakened and his hair had turned white, and his wife had been barren throughout their marriage. By every ordinary measure, the chance of a child had passed.

Zakariya was also the guardian of Maryam, the daughter of Imran, who had been dedicated to the service of the sanctuary. Whenever he entered her chamber he found provision with her that he had not brought. When he asked where it came from, she replied that it was from Allah, who provides for whom He wills without measure (Al-Imran 3:37). The Quran links this moment directly to what followed: "At that, Zakariya called upon his Lord" (Al-Imran 3:38). Seeing fruit out of season in the hands of a young girl reminded him that the One who provides is not bound by seasons, nor by age.

Surah Maryam opens with his prayer, and describes it as "a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariya, when he called to his Lord a private call" (Maryam 19:2–3). He did not raise his voice. He said: "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy" (Maryam 19:4). He confessed his fear for the future: he had no heir to carry on the work of guidance after him, and his wife was barren. So he asked for "an heir who will inherit from me and inherit from the family of Yaqub, and make him, my Lord, pleasing to You" (Maryam 19:5–6). In Al-Imran his words are: "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication" (Al-Imran 3:38).

The answer came while he was standing in prayer. The angels called out to him in the mihrab: "Allah gives you good tidings of Yahya, confirming a word from Allah, and honourable, abstaining from women, and a prophet from among the righteous" (Al-Imran 3:39). In Surah Maryam the glad tidings carry a further honour: "O Zakariya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned to any before this name" (Maryam 19:7). Allah Himself chose the name, and declared that no one had carried it before him.

Zakariya was overwhelmed. "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" (Maryam 19:8). The reply was simple and complete: "So it will be; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing'" (Maryam 19:9). His question was not doubt; it was the wonder of a man who wanted to understand how the gift would come. He asked for a sign, and was told that for three nights he would be unable to speak to people, though he was sound in body. He came out to his people and signalled to them to glorify Allah morning and evening (Maryam 19:10–11; Al-Imran 3:41).

Surah Al-Anbiya sums up the whole episode in a few words: "And Zakariya, when he called to his Lord, 'My Lord, do not leave me alone, while You are the best of inheritors.' So We responded to him, and We gave to him Yahya, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive" (Al-Anbiya 21:89–90). Allah not only granted the son, He healed the mother. The child was an answer to a lifetime of sincere worship, and he came as a gift to a household that had never despaired of its Lord.

2. "O Yahya, Hold the Scripture Firmly""اے یحییٰ!

The Quran passes over the details of Yahya's birth and infancy and turns at once to what mattered most: the kind of person Allah made him. After the account of Zakariya's prayer, the next words of Surah Maryam are addressed to the child himself: "O Yahya, take the Scripture with determination" (Maryam 19:12). The Scripture here is the Tawrah, the Book revealed to Musa (AS), which the prophets of the Children of Israel were charged to preserve and apply. Yahya was commanded to hold it firmly, with strength and seriousness, neither diluting it nor neglecting it.

Then comes a statement that sets him apart: "And We gave him judgement while yet a boy" (Maryam 19:12). The word hukm has been understood by the commentators as wisdom, understanding of the Book and sound judgement. Allah granted it to him in childhood, before the age at which people normally acquire learning. Ibn Kathir records that when other children invited him to play, he would reply that he had not been created for play; this report comes through early narrators and is not from the Prophet ﷺ, but it reflects what the Quran itself says about his seriousness from a young age.

Allah describes four further qualities. "And affection from Us" (Maryam 19:13): the word hanan means tenderness and compassion, a gentle heart that Allah placed in him towards his Lord, his parents and the people. "And purity" (zakah): he was clean in body, soul and deeds, free of the sins that stain others. "And he was fearing of Allah" (Maryam 19:13): his tenderness never became softness towards wrongdoing; he was conscious of Allah in everything. "And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant" (Maryam 19:14): he honoured Zakariya and his mother, and he carried no trace of the arrogance that ruins the strong and the gifted.

These qualities were not merely the private virtues of a good man. They were the qualifications of a prophet. The angels had already told Zakariya that his son would be "a sayyid" – a chief, a leader whom people would follow in knowledge and worship – "and hasur", one who held himself back from women and from the desires of the world, "and a prophet from among the righteous" (Al-Imran 3:39). Scholars note that hasur does not mean he was incapable; it means he restrained himself, devoting his strength entirely to Allah. The Quran counts him among the prophets alongside his father: "And Zakariya and Yahya and Isa and Ilyas – and all were of the righteous" (Al-An'am 6:85).

Some narrations describe his way of life in greater detail: that he wore coarse clothing, ate from the plants of the earth, wept often from fear of Allah, and spent long hours in worship. Ibn Kathir collects such reports from the early generations, and they are consistent with the Quran's portrait, but they are not established from the Prophet ﷺ and should be read as the words of later narrators rather than as certain fact. A report in Musnad Ahmad states that Yahya "never committed a sin and never even thought of one"; its chain has been discussed by the scholars of hadith, and while the meaning – that he was protected from sin – matches the Quran's description of his purity, the wording itself is not firmly established.

What is certain is the seal Allah placed on his life: "And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive" (Maryam 19:15). These are the three moments at which a human being is most vulnerable and most alone – coming into the world, leaving it, and standing again before his Lord. For each of them, Allah granted Yahya safety and peace. Few people in all of history have been given such a greeting from their Creator, and it tells the reader that whatever happened to him afterwards at the hands of men, his end was secure with Allah.

3. The Prophet Who Confirmed the Word of Allah

Yahya (AS) was sent to the Children of Israel at a critical hour in their history. The Tawrah was in their hands but its teachings had been buried under the rulings and traditions of their scholars; the land was ruled by kings who feared no one; and the people were waiting, often without real hope, for the Messiah promised in their Scriptures. Into this setting Allah sent a young prophet whose first task, as the angels had told Zakariya, was to be "confirming a word from Allah" (Al-Imran 3:39).

The "word from Allah" is Isa (AS), whom the Quran calls "a word from Him" because he was created by Allah's command "Be" without a father (Al-Imran 3:45; An-Nisa 4:171). Yahya and Isa were close relatives on their mothers' side, born within months of each other, and the Prophet ﷺ described them as "the two maternal cousins" when he met them together on the night of the Mi'raj (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207; Sahih Muslim 162). Yahya was the older, and he was the first to proclaim that the Messiah was among them. In Christian scripture he is the one who baptises people in the River Jordan and points to Isa; the Quran does not go into these details, but it affirms his role as the one who bore witness to Isa and prepared the people for him.

Like every prophet, his message began with the oneness of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ narrated a hadith that gives us, in his own words, the heart of what Yahya taught. Allah commanded Yahya with five words to act upon and to command the Children of Israel to act upon. Yahya was about to delay, when Isa told him that he might be punished if he delayed, or that Isa would deliver the message in his place. So Yahya gathered the people in Bayt al-Maqdis until the sanctuary was full and people sat on the balconies, and he addressed them (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2863; graded sahih).

The first command was to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him. Yahya compared the one who commits shirk to a man who buys a servant with his own gold and silver, assigns him a house to work in, and then finds that the servant works for someone else and sends the earnings to a stranger. "Which of you would be pleased that his servant should be like that?" The second was prayer: when you pray, do not look around, for Allah turns His face towards the face of His servant as long as he does not turn away. The third was fasting, which he compared to a man in a group carrying a bag of musk; everyone is delighted by its scent, and the fragrance of the fasting person's breath is more pleasing to Allah than the scent of musk.

The fourth was charity. He compared it to a man captured by the enemy, who had his hands bound to his neck and was being led to execution, and who said: "I will ransom myself from you with little or much," and kept paying until he freed himself. The fifth was the remembrance of Allah, which he compared to a man pursued by an enemy who reaches a fortified stronghold and shuts himself inside; the servant is never safer from Shaytan than when he is engaged in the remembrance of Allah. In the same hadith the Prophet ﷺ added five commands of his own: to listen, to obey, to strive in Allah's cause, to migrate when required, and to hold to the community. The teaching of Yahya therefore became part of the teaching of Muhammad ﷺ.

This hadith gives the modern reader an unusually clear picture of Yahya as a preacher: vivid, concrete, and focused on the practical life of the believer rather than on abstract debate. He spoke to tradesmen and farmers in images they understood – servants, prisoners, perfume, fortresses. The Quran says of his household that "they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear" (Al-Anbiya 21:90), and his sermon shows the same spirit. He did not ask his people for anything new; he asked them to return to what their Book had always demanded, and to recognise the Messiah when he came.

4. The Martyrdom of Yahya

The Quran does not narrate the death of Yahya (AS) directly. What it does say, repeatedly and with great severity, is that the Children of Israel killed prophets. They are reproached for "killing the prophets without right" (Al-Baqarah 2:61; Al-Imran 3:112), and Allah says: "Is it that every time a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party you denied, and a party you killed" (Al-Baqarah 2:87). Isa (AS) himself was the target of a plot to kill him (Al-Imran 3:54). The early scholars of Islam were agreed that Yahya was one of those prophets who was murdered, and that his killing was among the worst crimes of that nation.

The details of his death come to us from the historians, not from the Quran or the sound hadith. Ibn Kathir, in Qasas al-Anbiya and Al-Bidaya wan-Nihaya, relates the account found in the reports of the early generations and in the Gospels: the king of the land wished to marry a woman who was not lawful for him – a close relative by marriage, according to most reports – and Yahya declared openly that such a marriage was forbidden. The woman, or her mother, bore a grudge against him, and at a moment when the king was pleased with her she asked for the head of Yahya as her reward. The king, who feared losing face more than he feared Allah, sent soldiers to the prison and had Yahya beheaded, and his head was brought to her on a platter.

Other reports give different reasons and different names, and some are clearly Isra'iliyyat – material taken from the People of the Book – which Muslim scholars record without vouching for it. Some narrations add that the blood of Yahya continued to boil on the ground until Allah sent Bukhtanassar (Nebuchadnezzar), who killed tens of thousands of the Children of Israel over it before it was stilled. Ibn Kathir himself notes the problem with this: Bukhtanassar lived centuries before Isa and Yahya, so the account cannot be historically correct, and it should be regarded as unreliable. Readers should hold to what is certain – that he was killed unjustly by his own people for upholding the law of Allah – and treat the rest as reports of uncertain value.

There is a hadith in Musnad Ahmad, narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, in which the Prophet ﷺ said that the people who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection include a man killed by a prophet or a man who killed a prophet. Several scholars have graded this hadith as acceptable, and it expresses a principle found throughout the Quran: the blood of a prophet is sacred, and to shed it is to invite the wrath of Allah. Whoever ordered the death of Yahya earned that wrath.

What makes the story so striking is the contrast between its two central figures. On one side stood a king with soldiers, palaces and the power of life and death, who was unable to say no to a request made at a banquet. On the other stood a young prophet in prison, who had everything to lose and nothing worldly to gain, and who would not soften a ruling of Allah to save his own life. He had been told by his Lord to "take the Scripture with determination" (Maryam 19:12), and he did so until the end. His death was not a defeat; it was the completion of his obedience.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that "the best jihad is a word of truth before a tyrannical ruler" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4344; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2174), and Yahya is the clearest example of this among the prophets. He did not raise an army or seek the throne. He simply refused to call the forbidden permissible, and he accepted the price. Through all of this the greeting Allah gave him remained in force: peace upon him on the day he dies. The sword of the king could reach his neck; it could not reach the peace that Allah had promised him.

5. Peace Upon Him in the Heavens – His Legacy

The last glimpse we have of Yahya (AS) is not on the earth but above it. On the night of the Isra and Mi'raj, when the Prophet ﷺ was taken from Makkah to Bayt al-Maqdis and then raised through the heavens, he met the prophets one by one. Jibril asked for the gate of the second heaven to be opened, and there the Prophet ﷺ found "the two maternal cousins, Isa son of Maryam and Yahya son of Zakariya." Jibril said: "This is Yahya and Isa, greet them." He greeted them, and they returned his greeting and said: "Welcome, O righteous brother and righteous prophet" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207; Sahih Muslim 162).

That scene is the fulfilment of the greeting Allah had spoken over him in the Quran: "And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive" (Maryam 19:15). He had been born in peace to a father who prayed for him. He had died in peace, though by violence, because he died obeying Allah. And he now rests in peace among the prophets, the companion of the very Messiah whose coming he was sent to confirm, waiting for the day he will be raised. The two cousins who were together in life are together in the heavens.

The Quran gives Yahya a place in the list of the great prophets who descended from Ibrahim: "And Zakariya and Yahya and Isa and Ilyas – and all were of the righteous" (Al-An'am 6:85). This is said in a passage that names eighteen prophets and then declares: "Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so from their guidance take an example" (Al-An'am 6:90). The command is addressed to Muhammad ﷺ and through him to every Muslim. The life of Yahya is therefore not only history; it is a model that this ummah has been told to follow.

What does that model consist of? First, seriousness about the Book of Allah from the earliest age. Second, tenderness of heart combined with fear of Allah, so that gentleness never becomes weakness. Third, purity in a corrupt society, holding oneself back from what others run after. Fourth, honouring one's parents – the Quran mentions this about Yahya specifically, and about Isa, as if to say that even prophets are measured by it. Fifth, plain speech about halal and haram before the powerful, whatever the cost. And sixth, the five pillars of his sermon: tawhid, prayer, fasting, charity and dhikr – the same five pillars on which the Prophet ﷺ built this community.

Christians honour Yahya as John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus. Muslims honour him as a prophet of Allah in his own right, a servant whom Allah praised in words He used for very few. The Quran mentions him by name five times, always with honour, and never records a single fault. He was given a name no one had carried, a wisdom no child had been given, and a greeting no ordinary person receives. His father's prayer – "make him, my Lord, pleasing to You" (Maryam 19:6) – was answered in full.

For the reader today, the story of Yahya is a reminder that a life can be short, outwardly unsuccessful and cut off by injustice, and still be counted by Allah among the greatest lives ever lived. He left no kingdom, no army and, so far as we know, no children. He left the truth spoken clearly and a heart that never bent. That was enough for his Lord to say: peace be upon him.

Lessons

  • No prayer is too late: Zakariya was answered in extreme old age, and Allah healed his wife as well.
  • Wisdom and seriousness about the Book of Allah can begin in childhood; Yahya was commanded to hold the Scripture firmly as a boy.
  • Tenderness of heart (hanan) and fear of Allah belong together; gentleness must never become softness towards wrongdoing.
  • Purity and self-restraint in a corrupt society are honoured by Allah above worldly success.
  • Kindness and obedience to parents are qualities Allah specifically praises in His prophets.
  • Tawhid, prayer, fasting, charity and the remembrance of Allah are the core of every prophet's message and the believer's fortress against Shaytan.
  • Speaking the truth before a tyrant, even at the cost of one's life, is among the highest forms of jihad.
  • A life cut short by injustice is not a failed life; Allah's peace was upon Yahya at his birth, his death and his resurrection.
  • The prophets are brothers: Yahya confirmed Isa, and both welcomed Muhammad ﷺ as a righteous brother.
