Seafood: Fish, Shrimp, Crab and Squid

🐟 Halal Foods

All fish are halal and need no slaughter. The schools differ on other sea creatures such as shrimp, crab, lobster, squid and oysters. Here is what each school says, so that you can follow your school with understanding and respect those who differ.

The Qur'an says: "Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food, as provision for you and the travellers" (5:96). When asked about making wudu with sea water, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Its water is pure and its dead are lawful" (Sunan Abi Dawud 83; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 69, graded sahih). Fish found dead, floating or washed up are therefore halal: the Companions ate a huge whale-like fish (al-anbar) that the sea cast up and the Prophet ﷺ ate from what they brought back (Sahih al-Bukhari 4362, Sahih Muslim 1935).

Fish. Every kind of fish with fins and scales or without them (tuna, salmon, cod, sardine, catfish, eel, shark, swordfish) is halal in all four schools. No slaughter or tasmiyah is required; you may buy fish from anyone. Fish eggs (caviar, roe) follow the fish. Fish gelatin is halal.

Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali view. These schools understand "the game of the sea" to include every creature that lives only in water. Shrimp, prawn, lobster, crab, squid, octopus, oysters, mussels, clams and scallops are all halal. The Hanbali school excludes animals that are harmful (such as poisonous species) and the Maliki school excludes none, though Malikis dislike eating creatures that live in both water and land, like frogs and crocodiles, and Shafi'is forbid frogs, crocodiles and sea snakes.

Hanafi view. The Hanafi school permits only fish (samak) from the sea, based on the general prohibition of "filth" (7:157) and the hadith of the two dead things, where only fish is named (Ibn Majah 3314). So crab, lobster, octopus, squid and shellfish are not eaten. Shrimp is debated inside the school: many Hanafi scholars, including most in Pakistan and India, treat shrimp as a kind of fish and allow it, while others consider it an insect-like creature and avoid it. The common Pakistani practice of eating prawns reflects the first view. A Hanafi who wants to be safe may avoid shrimp; one who follows the lenient opinion is on solid ground.

Practical guidance. In a Western or East Asian restaurant, fish dishes are the easiest halal choice as long as no wine or pork fat is used in cooking; ask about the sauce and the frying oil, since fish is sometimes fried in the same oil as pork products or battered with beer. Sushi: raw fish is halal; check for mirin (rice wine) in the sushi rice and sauces, and for imitation crab (surimi), which is fish paste that often contains additives. Fish sauce is fermented fish and salt, and is halal unless alcohol has been added. Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies and, in some brands, vinegar from alcohol, which most scholars accept, but a few brands add malt vinegar or other alcohol, so check.

If you follow a school that forbids shellfish, do not condemn those who eat it; the matter is one of legitimate difference. The Prophet ﷺ said the halal is clear, the haram is clear, and the doubtful lies between (Sahih al-Bukhari 52).
