Halal is not only what we eat but how we eat. The Prophet ﷺ taught simple manners that turn every meal into worship: beginning with Allah's name, using the right hand, sitting humbly, sharing, not wasting and praising Allah at the end.
Begin with Bismillah. The Prophet ﷺ said to Umar ibn Abi Salamah: "Young boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376; Sahih Muslim 2022). If you forget at the start, say "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu" when you remember (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1858). Satan shares food over which Allah's name is not mentioned (Sahih Muslim 2017).
Use the right hand. "When one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, for Satan eats and drinks with his left" (Sahih Muslim 2020).
Sit humbly. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I do not eat while reclining" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5398). He sat on the ground, ate with three fingers and licked his fingers and the plate before wiping them, saying one does not know in which part of the food the blessing lies (Sahih Muslim 2033). If a morsel falls, remove any dirt and eat it rather than leave it for Satan (Sahih Muslim 2033). Drinking while standing is disliked except for need; the Prophet ﷺ drank zamzam standing (Sahih al-Bukhari 1637), which shows it is not forbidden. Breathe outside the cup and drink in three breaths (Sahih Muslim 2028).
Do not waste or overeat. "Eat and drink, but do not be excessive; indeed He does not like the excessive" (7:31). The Prophet ﷺ said: "The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. It is enough for him to eat a few morsels to keep his back straight; if he must, then one third for food, one third for drink and one third for breath" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2380, sahih). Take only what you will eat, and share leftovers.
Never criticise food. "The Prophet ﷺ never criticised any food. If he liked it he ate it, and if he disliked it he left it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5409).
Eat together. "Food for two is enough for three, and food for three is enough for four" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5392). Eating together brings blessing, and feeding others is among the best deeds (Sahih al-Bukhari 12).
Wash and praise. Washing the hands before and after eating is a good practice from the Companions, and rinsing the mouth after eating is Sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari 5390). End by praising Allah: "Allah is pleased with His servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and drinks a drink and praises Him for it" (Sahih Muslim 2734). Make dua for your host (Sahih Muslim 2042). The supplications are listed in the duas section below.
