The Year of the Elephant

Seerah

Abraha marched on Makkah with an army and elephants to destroy the Ka'bah, and Allah destroyed his army with flocks of birds. In that same year, the Prophet ﷺ was born.

A few weeks before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, an event took place in Makkah that the Arabs never forgot. They began to date their years from it, calling it the Year of the Elephant, around 570 CE.

At that time Yemen was ruled by Abraha al-Ashram, a governor on behalf of the Christian kingdom of Abyssinia. According to the seerah books, Abraha built a magnificent church in San'a, hoping to turn the pilgrimage of the Arabs away from the Ka'bah in Makkah. When this failed, and the Arabs continued to honour the House built by Ibrahim and Isma'il (AS), he became furious and resolved to destroy the Ka'bah. He marched north with a large army, and with it came one or more war elephants, a sight the Arabs had never seen before.

The tribes on the way could not stop him. Near Makkah his soldiers seized the camels of the Makkans, including two hundred camels belonging to Abd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ and the chief of Quraysh. The seerah books report that Abd al-Muttalib went to Abraha and asked only for his camels. Abraha was surprised that he did not plead for the Ka'bah. Abd al-Muttalib replied: "I am the owner of the camels, and the House has a Lord who will protect it." He then told the people of Makkah to withdraw to the mountains, and he held the door of the Ka'bah and prayed to Allah to defend His House.

When Abraha's army prepared to advance, the seerah reports that the lead elephant knelt down and refused to move towards the Ka'bah, though it would get up and walk in any other direction. Then Allah sent His response, as the Quran describes in Surah al-Fil:

"Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan go astray? And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay, and He made them like eaten straw" (105:1-5).

The army was destroyed. Abraha himself was struck and, according to the seerah, died as he was carried back towards Yemen. The Ka'bah stood unharmed, and Quraysh became even more respected among the Arabs as the people of the House that Allah had protected.

The Prophet ﷺ later referred to this event. At Hudaybiyyah, when his camel al-Qaswa knelt and would not move towards Makkah, he said: "She has not become stubborn; it is not her habit. Rather, she has been held back by the One who held back the elephant."

In this same year, in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah, on a Monday, as he himself mentioned when asked about fasting on Mondays. Allah protected His House, and in the same year He sent into the world the final Messenger who would purify that House of idols and restore it to the worship of Allah alone.

Lessons

  • Allah protects what He wills; no power can defeat His plan.
  • Arrogance and aggression against Allah's sacred House end in ruin.
  • Trust in Allah while also taking sensible steps, as the Makkans withdrew to the hills.
  • Allah prepares the world for great events in ways people do not expect.
  • Reflect on the history the Quran tells; it is a lesson for every age.
