Asiyah (AS): Faith in the Palace of Pharaoh

Women

The wife of the greatest tyrant of her age, who saved the baby Musa, believed in Allah, and asked for a house near her Lord in Paradise rather than the palace of Pharaoh.

Asiyah (peace be upon her), the wife of Pharaoh, lived in the palace of the most arrogant tyrant of her time, a ruler who proclaimed: "I am your lord, most high" (79:24). Her name is not mentioned in the Quran; it is known from the hadith, and the scholars give her full name as Asiyah bint Muzahim. Yet Allah made her an example for all believers until the end of time.

When Pharaoh was killing the newborn sons of the Children of Israel, Allah inspired the mother of Musa (AS) to place her baby in a chest and cast it into the river, promising to return him to her (28:7). The river carried the chest to Pharaoh's household, and they took it out. When Asiyah saw the child, Allah filled her heart with love for him. She said to Pharaoh: "A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son" (28:9). Through her mercy, the child who would one day bring an end to Pharaoh's tyranny was raised in Pharaoh's own palace. Allah then returned him to his mother to nurse, "so that she might be content and not grieve, and know that the promise of Allah is true" (28:13).

Years later, Musa (AS) came with the message of Allah and clear signs, and Pharaoh rejected them with arrogance. Asiyah, surrounded by all the luxury of the palace, believed in Allah, the Lord of Musa and Harun. She knew what this faith might cost her.

The Quran records her prayer: "And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, 'My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people'" (66:11). Scholars have noted that she asked to be near Allah before she asked for the house itself. She preferred a home with her Lord to the palace of the mightiest king on earth.

It is reported in narrations from early scholars of tafsir that Pharaoh had her tortured for her faith, and that she remained steadfast until she died. These details are found in the books of tafsir.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Many men attained perfection, but among women none attained perfection except Asiyah the wife of Pharaoh and Maryam daughter of Imran." In another narration he named the best of the women of Paradise as Khadijah, Fatimah, Maryam and Asiyah.

Her verse comes right after the verse about the wives of Nuh and Lut, who were married to righteous prophets but did not believe (66:10). Together they teach a powerful lesson: being close to a righteous person does not save someone who lacks faith, and being close to a wicked person does not harm someone who holds firmly to faith. Each soul will answer for its own belief and deeds.

Lessons

  • Faith can flourish even in the most hostile surroundings.
  • Mercy towards a helpless child can be part of Allah's great plan.
  • Seek nearness to Allah above every worldly comfort.
  • Each person is responsible for their own faith, whoever their family is.
  • Steadfastness in faith is rewarded with eternal honour.
