At the age of forty, while worshipping in the Cave of Hira, Muhammad ﷺ was visited by the angel Jibril with the first words of the Quran: "Read in the name of your Lord who created."
As Muhammad ﷺ approached the age of forty, he began to love solitude. Aishah (RA) narrated that the revelation began with true dreams: every dream he saw came true like the brightness of dawn. Then seclusion was made beloved to him. He would go to the Cave of Hira, on a mountain outside Makkah, and spend many nights there in worship, taking provisions with him, then return to Khadijah (RA) to take provisions for more nights.
In the month of Ramadan, around 610 CE, while he was in the cave, the angel came to him and said: "Read!" He replied: "I am not one who reads." He said: "The angel seized me and pressed me until I could bear no more, then released me and said, 'Read!' I said, 'I am not one who reads.'" This happened three times. Then the angel said:
"Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not" (96:1-5).
These were the first verses of the Quran to be revealed. The Quran itself confirms that it was sent down in the month of Ramadan (2:185) and on a blessed night, the Night of Decree (97:1).
The Prophet ﷺ returned home with his heart trembling. He went to Khadijah (RA) and said: "Cover me, cover me!" They covered him until the fear left him. He told her what had happened and said: "I fear for myself." She replied with words of deep faith and love: "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep ties of kinship, you carry the burden of the weak, you give to the destitute, you honour the guest, and you help those afflicted by true calamities."
Khadijah took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, an elderly man who had become a Christian and could read the scriptures. When he heard the account, Waraqah said: "This is the Namus (the angel of revelation) whom Allah sent down to Musa. I wish I were young, and alive when your people drive you out." The Prophet ﷺ asked: "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah said: "Yes. No man has ever come with what you have brought except that he was treated with hostility. If I live to see your day, I will support you strongly." But Waraqah died soon after.
After this there was a pause in the revelation. Then, one day, the Prophet ﷺ saw the same angel sitting on a chair between the heavens and the earth, and Allah revealed: "O you who covers himself, arise and warn, and your Lord glorify, and your clothing purify, and uncleanliness avoid" (74:1-5). After that the revelation came frequently and continued for twenty-three years.
So began the final message to humanity, with a command to read and to seek knowledge in the name of Allah.
Lessons
- Islam began with the command to read; seeking knowledge is part of faith.
- Times of quiet reflection and worship prepare the heart for guidance.
- A supportive spouse and family are a great blessing.
- Good character is a sign of Allah's care and protection.
- Those who carry the truth should expect opposition and remain patient.
