In one year the Prophet ﷺ lost his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadijah (RA). He then went to Ta'if seeking support and was driven out with stones, yet he chose mercy over revenge.
In the tenth year of prophethood, around 619 CE, shortly after the boycott of Banu Hashim had ended, the Prophet ﷺ suffered two great losses.
The first was his uncle Abu Talib, who had raised him and protected him from Quraysh for years, though he never accepted Islam. As he lay dying, the Prophet ﷺ sat by him and urged him: "O uncle, say La ilaha illallah, a word by which I can plead for you before Allah." But Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah were present, and they kept asking: "Will you abandon the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" He died upon that religion. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply grieved, and Allah revealed: "Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills" (28:56).
Soon after, Khadijah (RA), his beloved wife and first believer, passed away. He had lost both his protector outside the home and his comfort inside it. That year became known in the seerah as the Year of Sorrow. With Abu Talib gone, Quraysh grew bolder in harming him.
Seeking support for the message, the Prophet ﷺ travelled to Ta'if, a town in the mountains about seventy miles from Makkah, accompanied, according to the seerah, by Zayd ibn Harithah (RA). He invited the leaders of the Thaqif tribe to Islam, but they rejected him harshly and set their slaves and youths against him. They lined the road and pelted him with stones until his feet bled.
Aishah (RA) once asked him whether he had ever faced a day harder than Uhud. He said that the hardest was the day he presented himself to Ibn Abd Yalil and was rejected. He walked away overwhelmed with grief, and only came to himself at Qarn ath-Tha'alib. He looked up and saw a cloud shading him, and in it was Jibril, who said: "Allah has heard what your people said to you and how they replied. He has sent the angel of the mountains for you to command as you wish." The angel of the mountains greeted him and said: "If you wish, I will bring together the two mountains upon them." The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Rather, I hope that Allah will bring from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him."
It is reported in the seerah that while he rested in a garden, a Christian servant named Addas brought him grapes, and when the Prophet ﷺ spoke of Yunus (AS) as his brother prophet, Addas kissed his hands. On the return journey, at Nakhlah, a group of jinn listened to his recitation of the Quran and believed, as Allah mentions in Surah al-Ahqaf (46:29-31) and Surah al-Jinn.
The Prophet ﷺ re-entered Makkah under the protection of al-Mut'im ibn Adi. His hope for Ta'if came true: some years later the people of Ta'if accepted Islam, and their descendants worship Allah to this day.
Lessons
- Guidance is in Allah's hands alone; our duty is to convey with love.
- Grief is natural, and even the Prophet ﷺ felt it deeply.
- Choose mercy and hope over revenge, even when you have the power.
- Rejection is not failure; the fruits of da'wah may come years later.
- After the darkest times, Allah opens new doors.
