Sumayyah bint Khayyat (RA): The First Martyr of Islam

Women

An elderly, poor woman without a tribe to protect her, who endured torture with her husband and son and gave her life rather than abandon her faith.

Sumayyah bint Khayyat (RA) lived in Makkah as a servant of Abu Hudhayfah ibn al-Mughirah of the Makhzum clan. She married Yasir ibn Amir, a man from Yemen who had settled in Makkah, and they had a son, Ammar. When the call of Islam came, the whole family, Yasir, Sumayyah and Ammar, accepted it in its earliest days. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) named Ammar and his mother Sumayyah among the first seven people to declare their Islam openly.

The family had no powerful tribe to protect them, so the leaders of Banu Makhzum, and Abu Jahl above all, made them targets of cruel torture. The seerah books describe how they were taken out into the burning heat of the Makkan midday and tormented to force them to give up Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ and the believers were themselves weak at that time and could not stop the oppression. It is reported that he passed by them while they were being tortured and said: "Be patient, O family of Yasir, for your promised meeting place is Paradise." This narration is recorded by al-Hakim and at-Tabarani, and several scholars have graded it acceptable.

Sumayyah was elderly and frail, yet her faith did not bend. The seerah books report that Abu Jahl, enraged by her firmness and her words, struck her with a spear and killed her. She thus became the first martyr in Islam. Her husband Yasir also died under the torture.

Their son Ammar was tortured so severely that he spoke words against the Prophet ﷺ under compulsion to escape. He came to the Prophet ﷺ in tears. The Prophet ﷺ asked him how he found his heart, and he said it was at peace with faith. The scholars of tafsir mention that it was concerning such cases that Allah revealed: "...except for one who is forced while his heart is secure in faith" (16:106). Ammar lived to become one of the great companions.

Abu Jahl was killed at the Battle of Badr in 2 AH. It is reported in the seerah that the Prophet ﷺ said to Ammar: "Allah has killed the killer of your mother."

The Quran explains that trials are part of faith: "Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe,' and they will not be tested? But We have certainly tested those before them" (29:2-3). Sumayyah (RA) showed, at the very dawn of Islam, that a woman who was poor, elderly and without a tribe could be stronger in faith than the most powerful men of Makkah. She had no wealth, no status and no army, yet her name is remembered with honour by Muslims everywhere, while her persecutors are remembered only for their cruelty. Her sacrifice reminds every believer that the price of faith may be high, but the reward with Allah is far greater.

Lessons

  • True strength is the strength of faith, not of body or wealth.
  • Allah's promise of Paradise makes worldly suffering bearable.
  • Women have been heroes of Islam from its very first days.
  • Allah does not hold a person accountable for what they say under severe compulsion while their heart is firm in faith.
  • Oppressors are humbled in the end, and the patient are honoured.
