The youngest daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, who defended her father in Makkah, lived a life of patience and simplicity, and was given the glad tidings of being the leader of the women of Paradise.
Fatimah az-Zahra (RA) was the youngest daughter of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah (RA). She was born in Makkah, a few years before prophethood according to the commonly held view, and as a young girl she saw the hardships her father faced for his message.
One day, while the Prophet ﷺ was prostrating near the Ka'bah, some leaders of Quraysh had the waste and entrails of a slaughtered camel placed on his back, and they laughed until they leaned on one another. He stayed in prostration. Young Fatimah came running, removed the filth from his back and turned to them with sharp words. She was a child, but she did not fear them.
She shared the hardships of the boycott in the valley of Abu Talib, lost her mother in the Year of Sorrow, and emigrated to Madinah. There, in 2 AH, she married Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA). Their home was simple and their work was hard. She ground grain with a hand-mill until her hands were sore. When some captives were brought to Madinah, she went to ask her father for a servant. He came to them at night and said: "Shall I not teach you something better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say SubhanAllah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. That is better for you than a servant." Ali (RA) said he never abandoned this remembrance afterwards.
She was the mother of al-Hasan and al-Husain (RA), of whom the Prophet ﷺ said that they are the leaders of the youth of Paradise, and of Zaynab and Umm Kulthum.
The love between father and daughter was deep. Aishah (RA) said she had not seen anyone more like the Prophet ﷺ in manner, bearing and speech than Fatimah. When she came to him, he would stand to welcome her, kiss her and seat her in his own place, and she would do the same for him. He said: "Fatimah is a part of me; whoever angers her angers me."
During his final illness, he called her and whispered something to her, and she wept. Then he whispered again, and she smiled. After his death Aishah (RA) asked her about it. She said: "He told me first that he would die in this illness, so I wept. Then he told me that I would be the first of his family to follow him, and asked whether I was not pleased to be the leader of the women of the believers, so I smiled."
It happened as he said. She passed away in Madinah about six months after her father, in 11 AH, and was buried at night. Her life teaches that true honour lies in faith, patience and devotion, not in worldly comfort.
