Aishah bint Abi Bakr (RA): The Scholar of the Ummah

Women

The beloved wife of the Prophet ﷺ and daughter of Abu Bakr (RA), whose innocence Allah declared in the Quran and who became one of the greatest teachers of Islam.

Aishah bint Abi Bakr (RA) was the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) and Umm Ruman (RA). She grew up in a household of faith from her earliest childhood. The Prophet ﷺ married her in Makkah after the death of Khadijah (RA), and she joined his household in Madinah after the Hijrah. She was the only one of his wives who had not been married before.

The Prophet ﷺ loved her dearly. When Amr ibn al-As (RA) asked him who was the most beloved of people to him, he said: "Aishah." He asked, "And among men?" He said: "Her father." The Prophet ﷺ also said: "The superiority of Aishah over other women is like the superiority of tharid over other food."

Her room was beside the mosque, and she witnessed much of the Prophet's daily life. She was intelligent, eloquent, blessed with an excellent memory, and she would keep asking until she fully understood. She narrated more than two thousand hadith and became one of the greatest scholars of the Ummah. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) said: "Whenever we, the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, found a hadith difficult and asked Aishah about it, we found that she had knowledge of it."

Through her, Allah brought ease to the Ummah. On one journey she lost a necklace, and the army stopped to search for it in a place without water. When the time of prayer came, Allah revealed the verse of tayammum, permitting purification with clean earth when water is unavailable (5:6). Usayd ibn Hudayr (RA) said: "This is not the first of your blessings, O family of Abu Bakr."

She also faced a severe trial. Returning from the expedition against Banu al-Mustaliq, she went to search for a lost necklace and the caravan left without her. The companion Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal (RA) found her and brought her back. The hypocrites, led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy, spread a slander against her. For about a month she suffered and wept until she could not sleep, and she said she could only say what the father of Yusuf said: "Patience is most fitting, and Allah is the One whose help is sought." Then Allah revealed the verses of Surah an-Nur declaring her innocence (24:11-20). She later said she had never imagined that Allah would reveal verses about her that would be recited until the end of time.

The Prophet ﷺ spent his final illness in her room, and passed away with his head resting against her chest. He was buried in that very room.

After him she taught for almost fifty years. Companions and students came to her with questions of Quran, hadith and fiqh, and she corrected misunderstandings with clear knowledge. She was also extremely generous; it is reported that she once gave away a large sum in charity in a single day while fasting, leaving nothing for her own iftar. She died in Madinah in 57 or 58 AH and was buried in al-Baqi'.
