The brave daughter of Abu Bakr (RA) who tore her waistband in two to tie the provisions for the Hijrah, kept the secret of the journey, and lived a long life of faith and dignity.
Asma bint Abi Bakr (RA) was the elder daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) and the half-sister of Aishah (RA). She accepted Islam early in Makkah and married az-Zubair ibn al-Awwam (RA), one of the close companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr prepared secretly to emigrate to Madinah, Asma prepared food for their journey. She narrated: "I prepared the provisions of the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr in my father's house when they wanted to emigrate. We could not find anything with which to tie the food bag and the water skin. I said to Abu Bakr: 'By Allah, I find nothing to tie them with except my waistband.' He said: 'Cut it into two; tie the water skin with one and the food with the other.' So I did, and that is why I was called Dhat an-Nitaqayn, the one with two waistbands."
While the two hid in the Cave of Thawr, her brother Abdullah brought them the news of Makkah each night, and the seerah books report that Asma also carried food to them, keeping the secret despite the danger. It is reported in the seerah that Abu Jahl came to the house demanding to know where her father was, and when she said she did not know, he struck her face so hard that her earring flew off.
Her grandfather Abu Quhafah, who was blind and not yet Muslim, worried that Abu Bakr had taken all his wealth and left the family with nothing. The seerah books report that Asma placed stones in the niche where her father kept his money, covered them with a cloth and placed the old man's hand on them, so that he would be comforted. In truth her father had taken everything for the journey; she only wanted to put the old man at ease.
She later emigrated to Madinah while pregnant, and at Quba she gave birth to Abdullah ibn az-Zubair, the first child born to the emigrants after the Hijrah. The Prophet ﷺ chewed a date, placed it in the baby's mouth and prayed for him, and the Muslims rejoiced greatly.
Her early married life was poor. She cared for her husband's horse, fetched water and carried date stones on her head from land some distance away. During the truce with Quraysh, her mother, who was not a Muslim, came to visit her hoping for kindness. Asma asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she should keep ties with her, and he said: "Yes, keep good relations with your mother." The Quran affirms kindness to non-Muslims who do not fight the believers (60:8).
Asma lived to about a hundred years of age. She remained strong in faith and dignified through the trials of her later life, including the martyrdom of her son Abdullah in Makkah in 73 AH, and she passed away shortly after him.
