In Ramadan 2 AH, about 313 lightly armed believers faced an army of around a thousand from Quraysh, and Allah granted them a decisive victory with the help of the angels.
In Ramadan of 2 AH (624 CE), news reached Madinah that a large trade caravan of Quraysh, led by Abu Sufyan, was returning from Syria. Much of the wealth the Muhajirun had been forced to leave behind in Makkah was tied up in the trade of Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ set out with a small force to intercept the caravan. The companions numbered "three hundred and ten-odd", the same as the companions of Talut who crossed the river with him; the seerah books give the well-known number 313. They had only a few horses and about seventy camels, taking turns to ride.
Abu Sufyan learned of their approach, changed his route along the coast and sent for help. Quraysh came out in force, around a thousand men, well armed, led by Abu Jahl. Even after the caravan escaped, Abu Jahl insisted on marching to Badr to show the Arabs the power of Quraysh.
The Prophet ﷺ consulted his companions. Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad (RA) said: "We will not say to you as the people of Musa said, 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight.' Rather, we will fight on your right and on your left, in front of you and behind you." The Prophet's face shone with joy. The Ansar too declared through their leaders that they would follow him wherever he led them.
On the night before the battle, Allah sent down rain that firmed the sandy ground under the believers' feet, and gave them restful sleep (8:11). The Prophet ﷺ spent the night in prayer. In the morning, Friday the 17th of Ramadan, he looked at the army of the idolaters and at his own small band, and raised his hands, praying so earnestly that his cloak fell from his shoulders: "O Allah, fulfil for me what You have promised me. O Allah, if this small band of Muslims perishes, You will not be worshipped on earth." Abu Bakr (RA) placed the cloak back on his shoulders and said: "That is enough, O Messenger of Allah; your Lord will fulfil what He has promised you." Allah revealed: "When you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, 'Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand of the angels, following one another'" (8:9). The Prophet ﷺ came out reciting: "Their assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs" (54:45).
The battle was fierce but short. Abu Jahl, the enemy of the believers, was struck down by two young brothers of the Ansar, Mu'adh and Mu'awwidh, and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) found him dying. Seventy of the idolaters were killed, including many of their leaders, and seventy were taken captive. Fourteen Muslims were martyred.
Allah reminded the believers that the victory was His: "And already had Allah given you victory at Badr while you were few in number. So fear Allah that perhaps you will be grateful" (3:123). He called that day Yawm al-Furqan, the Day of the Criterion, when truth was clearly distinguished from falsehood (8:41).
The people of Badr gained a special rank, and the Prophet ﷺ spoke of Allah's forgiveness for them. Badr showed that victory does not depend on numbers, but on faith, obedience and the help of Allah.
Lessons
- Victory comes from Allah, not from numbers or weapons.
- Consultation (shura) strengthens unity and resolve.
- Turn to Allah with humble, earnest du'a before any challenge.
- Arrogance leads to downfall, as it did for Abu Jahl.
- Gratitude is the right response to Allah's help.
