The Battle of Uhud: A Lesson in Obedience

Seerah

In 3 AH the Muslims were winning at Uhud until most of the archers left their post. The battle turned, the Prophet ﷺ was wounded and about seventy companions were martyred.

One year after Badr, in Shawwal of 3 AH (625 CE), Quraysh marched on Madinah with about three thousand men, led by Abu Sufyan, seeking revenge. The Prophet ﷺ consulted his companions. Many, especially young men who had missed Badr, wished to go out and meet the enemy, and the Prophet ﷺ put on his armour and went out with about a thousand men. On the way, Abdullah ibn Ubayy, the leader of the hypocrites, turned back with about a third of the army, leaving around seven hundred believers.

The Prophet ﷺ arranged the army with Mount Uhud behind them. He placed fifty archers on a small hill, under the command of Abdullah ibn Jubayr (RA), and told them: "Even if you see birds snatching us, do not leave your place until I send for you."

At first the Muslims drove the Quraysh back, and the enemy began to flee. Seeing this, most of the archers said: "The spoils! The spoils!" Abdullah ibn Jubayr reminded them of the Prophet's command, but they went down. Khalid ibn al-Walid, then still fighting for Quraysh, saw the hill left almost empty. He led the cavalry around and attacked the Muslims from behind, and the fleeing Quraysh returned. Allah describes this moment: "...until when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love" (3:152).

In the confusion the Prophet ﷺ was wounded. His face was cut, one of his teeth was broken, and his helmet was smashed on his head. A cry went up that he had been killed, and many of the believers lost heart. Allah later revealed: "Muhammad is not but a messenger; other messengers have passed on before him. So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?" (3:144). Some companions stood firm around him, shielding him with their bodies. Anas ibn an-Nadr (RA) said: "I smell the fragrance of Paradise near Uhud," and fought until he was martyred with more than eighty wounds.

About seventy Muslims were martyred, among them Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), the Prophet's beloved uncle, killed by a spear thrown by Wahshi, as well as Mus'ab ibn Umair (RA), the bearer of the banner. The martyrs were buried in their clothes, sometimes two in one grave.

At the end of the day Abu Sufyan boasted, "Hubal be exalted!" The Prophet ﷺ told the companions to reply: "Allah is Most High and Most Majestic." Abu Sufyan said: "We have al-Uzza and you have no Uzza." They replied: "Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector."

The next day the Prophet ﷺ led the wounded believers out in pursuit as far as Hamra al-Asad, and Allah praised "those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had struck them" (3:172).

Allah comforted the believers: "So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are true believers" (3:139). The Prophet ﷺ kept his love for that place: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us, and we love it."

Lessons

  • Obeying the Prophet's instructions brings safety; disobedience brings loss.
  • Love of worldly gain can turn victory into defeat.
  • Our loyalty is to Allah, who is Ever-Living, and to His message.
  • Setbacks are tests; believers rise again with patience.
  • Martyrs and the steadfast are honoured forever.
