An early believer who stayed firm when his beloved mother refused food to make him leave Islam, the first to shoot an arrow in Allah's cause, and the victor of al-Qadisiyyah.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA), of the Zuhrah clan of Quraysh, the clan of the Prophet's mother Aminah, accepted Islam as a young man among the very first believers. He was devoted to his mother, and she to him.
When she learned of his Islam, she swore she would neither eat nor drink nor speak to him until he gave up his religion. She said: "You claim that Allah commands you to be good to your parents. I am your mother, and I command you to do this." Sa'd narrated that she went three days without food until she fainted. He loved her dearly, but he would not abandon his faith. Allah then revealed: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them" (29:8), and in Surah Luqman: "...but accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness" (31:15). The seerah books report that he told her: "Even if you had a hundred souls and they left you one by one, I would not leave this religion," and when she saw his firmness, she ate again.
He was a skilled archer. He said: "I was the first of the Arabs to shoot an arrow in the cause of Allah." At Uhud, when the Muslims were thrown into confusion, he stood near the Prophet ﷺ, shooting arrows, and the Prophet ﷺ passed arrows to him, saying: "Shoot, may my father and mother be ransomed for you!" Ali (RA) said he never heard the Prophet ﷺ say these words, joining his father and mother together, for anyone except Sa'd. The Prophet ﷺ prayed that Allah would answer Sa'd's supplications, and he is one of the ten companions who were given the glad tidings of Paradise.
During the Farewell Pilgrimage he fell seriously ill. He asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he could give two thirds of his wealth in charity, as he had only one daughter as an heir. The Prophet ﷺ said no. Half? No. Then he said: "A third, and a third is a lot. Leaving your heirs rich is better than leaving them poor, asking people for help. Whatever you spend seeking Allah's pleasure, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife's mouth." Sa'd recovered and lived for many more years.
During the caliphate of Umar (RA), he commanded the Muslim army at the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah against the Persian empire, opening the way into Iraq, and he founded the city of Kufa. When some people of Kufa complained about him, even claiming that he did not pray properly, Umar investigated. Sa'd explained that he prayed exactly as the Prophet ﷺ prayed, and Umar accepted his answer.
In his later years he withdrew from the disputes among Muslims and lived quietly at al-Aqiq near Madinah, where he died around 55 AH. He is reported to have been the last of the Ten promised Paradise to pass away.
