Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA): The Trustworthy One of the Ummah

Sahaba

The humble companion whom the Prophet ﷺ called "the trustworthy one of this Ummah", who led the Muslim armies in Syria and died in the plague of Amwas among his soldiers.

Abu Ubaidah Amir ibn Abdullah ibn al-Jarrah (RA), of the Fihr clan of Quraysh, was among the earliest Muslims; the seerah books report that he accepted Islam through the invitation of Abu Bakr (RA). He was tall and lean, gentle in manner and humble, and he took part in every major battle alongside the Prophet ﷺ. It is reported in the seerah that at Uhud, when two rings of the Prophet's helmet were driven into his cheek, Abu Ubaidah pulled them out with his teeth and lost two of his front teeth.

The Prophet ﷺ gave him a unique title. When the people of Najran asked him to send them a trustworthy man, he said: "I will send you a man who is truly trustworthy." The companions each hoped for the honour, but he chose Abu Ubaidah. He said: "Every nation has a trustworthy one (amin), and the trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah."

Jabir (RA) narrated a famous expedition led by Abu Ubaidah. The Prophet ﷺ sent him with three hundred men to the coast to watch for a caravan of Quraysh, with only a bag of dates as provision. Food ran so short that each man received one date a day; they sucked it as a child does, drank water after it, and beat leaves from trees to eat. Then the sea cast up an enormous creature, and the army ate from it for half a month until they regained their strength. Abu Ubaidah had one of its ribs set up, and a man on a camel passed beneath it. When they returned and told the Prophet ﷺ, he said it was provision that Allah had brought out for them, and asked if they had any of it left for him to eat.

After the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr (RA) mentioned him as one fit to lead, but Abu Ubaidah gave his pledge to Abu Bakr. Under Umar (RA), he became the overall commander of the Muslim armies in Syria, where Damascus and many other cities were opened. It is reported that when Umar visited him there, he found in his house nothing but his sword, his shield and his saddle, and Umar wept, saying the world had changed all of them except Abu Ubaidah.

In 18 AH plague struck Syria. Umar set out for Syria, but when he heard of the plague at Sargh he decided to turn back. Abu Ubaidah asked: "Are you fleeing from the decree of Allah?" Umar replied: "Yes, we flee from the decree of Allah to the decree of Allah." Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf (RA) then reported the Prophet's ﷺ instruction: if plague breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave it, and if you hear of it in a land, do not enter it. Abu Ubaidah remained with his army, as the Prophet ﷺ had taught, and died of the plague of Amwas that year. The trustworthy one returned his trust to Allah.
