Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA): The Shepherd Who Became a Teacher of the Quran

Sahaba

A humble shepherd of Makkah who became one of the greatest reciters and scholars of the Quran, and whose recitation brought tears to the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) was a young shepherd in Makkah, looking after the sheep of Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt, one of the leaders of Quraysh. He was slight in build, from a humble family, and had no strong tribe in Makkah to protect him. He narrated that one day the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) passed by and asked whether he had any milk. He said: "Yes, but I am entrusted with these sheep." The Prophet ﷺ asked for a young ewe that had never given milk. He passed his hand over its udder and prayed, and it filled with milk. They drank, and then the udder returned to how it had been. Abdullah asked to be taught, and the Prophet ﷺ touched his head and said: "You are a young man who will be well taught." (Musnad Ahmad) He became one of the earliest Muslims.

The seerah books report that the companions once said that Quraysh had never heard the Quran recited aloud to them, and asked who would do it. Abdullah volunteered. They worried that he had no clan to protect him, but he insisted. He went to the Ka'bah in the morning and recited Surah ar-Rahman aloud. The Quraysh struck him on the face, yet he continued, and he returned bruised, saying the enemies of Allah had never seemed less important to him.

He stayed constantly close to the Prophet ﷺ, and he and his mother were in and out of the Prophet's house so often that newcomers thought they were members of his household. He learned more than seventy surahs directly from the Prophet's mouth. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Learn the Quran from four:" and named Abdullah ibn Mas'ud first, then Salim, Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Mu'adh ibn Jabal.

Once the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Recite the Quran to me." He replied: "Shall I recite it to you, when it was revealed to you?" The Prophet ﷺ said he loved to hear it from someone else. Abdullah recited Surah an-Nisa until he reached: "So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and bring you as a witness against these?" (4:41). The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is enough," and Abdullah looked up and saw his eyes overflowing with tears.

At Badr, the Prophet ﷺ asked who would find out what had happened to Abu Jahl. Abdullah found the persecutor of the believers lying mortally wounded, struck down by two young men of the Ansar, and he ended his life.

Once some companions laughed at his thin legs when the wind uncovered them as he climbed a tree to cut a siwak. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Are you laughing at the thinness of his legs? By the One in whose hand is my soul, they are heavier on the Scale than Mount Uhud." (Musnad Ahmad)

Umar (RA) later sent him to Kufa as a teacher, and he taught generations of students there; his teaching became a foundation of the scholarship of Kufa. He died in Madinah in 32 AH. The humble shepherd had become a teacher of the Ummah.
