Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA): The Sword of Allah

Sahaba

Once the commander who turned the Battle of Uhud against the Muslims, Khalid accepted Islam and became Sayfullah, the Sword of Allah, saving the army at Mu'tah and leading great campaigns.

Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA), of the Makhzum clan of Quraysh, was one of the most gifted military commanders in history. Before Islam he fought against the Muslims. At Uhud in 3 AH he led the Makkan cavalry, and when the archers left their post on the hill, Khalid saw the opening, rode around and attacked the Muslims from behind, changing the course of the battle.

Yet Allah had prepared another path for him. After the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, Khalid began to reflect on what he had seen: how the Prophet ﷺ was protected, and how his message kept spreading despite every effort to stop it. The seerah books report that his brother al-Walid ibn al-Walid, already a Muslim, wrote to him that the Prophet ﷺ had asked about him and said that a man of Khalid's intelligence could not stay away from Islam for long. In early 8 AH Khalid set out for Madinah. On the way he met Amr ibn al-As and Uthman ibn Talhah, who were travelling for the same purpose, and they accepted Islam before the Prophet ﷺ. Khalid was worried about everything he had done against Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ reassured them, as he told Amr, that Islam wipes away what came before it.

A few months later, in 8 AH, the Muslims faced a huge Byzantine force at Mu'tah in Syria. The Prophet ﷺ had appointed Zayd ibn Harithah as commander, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah. All three were martyred. In Madinah the Prophet ﷺ announced their deaths with tears in his eyes, and said: "Then the flag was taken by a sword from among the swords of Allah, until Allah granted them victory." Khalid had taken command and skilfully brought the army safely out of danger. He later said: "Nine swords broke in my hand on the day of Mu'tah; nothing remained in my hand except a broad Yemeni blade." From then on he was known as Sayfullah, the Sword of Allah.

He took part in the Conquest of Makkah, leading one of the columns that entered the city, and in the campaigns that followed. During the caliphate of Abu Bakr (RA) he led armies in Arabia and Iraq, and then crossed the desert to reinforce the Muslims in Syria. He played a leading role in the decisive Battle of Yarmuk in 15 AH.

When Umar (RA) became Caliph, he made Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA) the overall commander in Syria. Khalid accepted the decision and continued to fight under Abu Ubaidah with the same sincerity, showing that he fought for Allah, not for rank. Historians report that Umar explained he did not want people to think that victory came from Khalid rather than from Allah.

Khalid died in Hims, Syria, in 21 AH. It is reported in the history books that he grieved that, after so many battles and with scars of swords and arrows over his body, he was dying in his bed. His life shows that a person's past does not prevent him from becoming a great servant of Islam.

Lessons

  • It is never too late to accept the truth; Islam wipes away the past.
  • Use your talents in the service of Allah's religion.
  • Sincerity means serving Allah whether you lead or follow.
  • Victory comes from Allah, not from any individual.
  • Reflect on what you see; signs of truth lead to guidance.
