Abu Hurairah (RA): The Guardian of the Prophet's Words

Sahaba

A poor companion of the Suffah who spent only about four years with the Prophet ﷺ, yet preserved more hadith than any other companion.

Abu Hurairah (RA), from the tribe of Daws in southern Arabia, is the companion who narrated more hadith than any other. He came to Madinah and accepted Islam in 7 AH, around the time of the Khaybar expedition, so he spent only about four years with the Prophet ﷺ, but in those years he hardly left his side. His well-known name means "father of the little cat"; it is reported that he was fond of a small cat. The most widely held view is that his own name was Abd ar-Rahman ibn Sakhr.

He was poor and lived among the People of the Suffah, the companions who stayed in the shelter of the Prophet's mosque with no home or wealth. One day, faint with hunger, he sat on the road the companions used. He asked Abu Bakr and then Umar (RA) about a verse of the Quran, hoping they would invite him to eat, but they did not understand. Then the Prophet ﷺ passed by, smiled, and knew what was in his face and heart. He took him home, where a cup of milk had been given as a gift, and told him to call the People of the Suffah. Abu Hurairah worried that nothing would be left for him, but he obeyed. He passed the cup to each man until all had drunk their fill. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Sit and drink," and kept saying "Drink" until Abu Hurairah said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have no more room for it." The Prophet ﷺ praised Allah, said Bismillah, and drank what remained.

People sometimes wondered how he narrated so much. He explained: "My brothers from the Muhajirun were busy with trade in the markets, and my brothers from the Ansar were busy with their property, but I kept close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I was present when they were absent, and I memorised when they forgot." He added that were it not for a verse in the Book of Allah he would not narrate anything, and recited: "Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance..." (2:159).

He once told the Prophet ﷺ that he heard many narrations but forgot them. The Prophet ﷺ told him to spread out his cloak; he did, and the Prophet ﷺ moved his hands as if scooping something into it and said, "Gather it to you." Abu Hurairah said: "I gathered it, and after that I never forgot anything."

His mother was still an idolater, and once she said something hurtful about the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Hurairah came weeping and asked him to pray for her. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Allah, guide the mother of Abu Hurairah." He hurried home and heard water splashing behind the closed door. His mother came out, having bathed, and declared the testimony of faith. He returned weeping with joy, and asked the Prophet ﷺ to pray that Allah make him and his mother beloved to the believers, and the Prophet ﷺ did.

Abu Hurairah later served as governor of Bahrain under Umar (RA) and taught hadith in Madinah to hundreds of students. He died around 57-59 AH. Through him, thousands of the Prophet's words and actions reached the Ummah.
