Prophet Al-Yasa' (AS) – Among the Best

Stories of the Prophets

Al-Yasa' (AS) is mentioned twice in the Quran as preferred over the worlds and among the best. The Quran and authentic hadith give no further details of his life.

Al-Yasa' (AS), commonly identified with Elisha of the Biblical tradition, is mentioned by name twice in the Quran. Allah lists him with Ismail, Yunus and Lut, and says that He preferred each of them over the worlds (Quran 6:86). He also says: remember Ismail, al-Yasa' and Dhul-Kifl, all of them among the best (Quran 38:48).

The Quran gives no details of his life or mission, and there are no authentic hadith describing him. Historians and commentators mention that he was a prophet of the Children of Israel, a companion and successor of Ilyas (AS), who continued calling the people to the worship of Allah alone after Ilyas. These details come from historical sources rather than the Quran or sahih hadith, so they are mentioned with caution.

The little that Allah tells us is still deeply meaningful. To be counted among the best and preferred over the worlds by Allah Himself is the highest honour. It also shows that the Quran does not mention the prophets to satisfy our curiosity about every detail, but to show us the unbroken chain of guidance Allah sent to humanity, and to teach us to believe in all His messengers without making distinction between them (Quran 2:285).

Lessons

  • Believe in all of Allah's messengers without distinction.
  • Honour before Allah matters more than how much is recorded about us.
  • Be careful to separate the Quran's certainty from historical reports.
