Ilyas (AS) called his people away from worshipping the idol Ba'l to the worship of Allah, the Best of creators. Allah honoured him with lasting praise.
Ilyas (AS), commonly identified with Elijah of the Biblical tradition, is mentioned in the Quran as one of the messengers. Allah lists him with Zakariya, Yahya and Isa among the righteous (Quran 6:85) and gives a short account of his mission in Surah as-Saffat (Quran 37:123-132).
Ilyas was sent to a people who worshipped an idol called Ba'l. He asked them whether they would not fear Allah, and how they could call upon Ba'l and abandon the Best of creators – Allah, their Lord and the Lord of their forefathers (Quran 37:124-126). His people rejected him, and the Quran says they will be brought forward for account, except Allah's sincere servants among them (Quran 37:127-128).
Allah left praise of him among later generations: peace be upon Ilyasin, a form of his name (Quran 37:129-130). Allah describes him as one of His believing servants and says that this is how He rewards those who do good (Quran 37:131-132).
Scholars say he was a prophet of the Children of Israel who came after Sulaiman (AS), and his people are often placed in the region of Baalbek in present-day Lebanon. These details come from historians and commentators. Other stories about him – such as claims that he is still alive and meets al-Khidr every year – are not established by authentic evidence.
His message was the same as that of every prophet: do not worship anything that is created; worship Allah alone, the Creator of everything.
Lessons
- Worship belongs only to the Creator, never to anything created.
- Following ancestors in error is no excuse.
- Allah preserves the good name of those who stand for truth.
