In 6 AH the Prophet ﷺ set out for Umrah and agreed a peace treaty with Quraysh whose terms seemed unfair to many companions, yet Allah called it "a clear victory".
In Dhul-Qa'dah of 6 AH (628 CE), the Prophet ﷺ set out from Madinah with about fourteen hundred companions to perform Umrah. They wore ihram and drove sacrificial animals before them, to show that they came in peace. Quraysh resolved to stop them.
Near Makkah, the Prophet's camel al-Qaswa knelt and would not move. He said: "She has been held back by the One who held back the elephant. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if they ask me for any plan that honours the sacred things of Allah, I will grant it to them." They camped at al-Hudaybiyyah, by a well with little water. The Prophet ﷺ took an arrow from his quiver and had it placed in the well, and water flowed until everyone had enough.
Quraysh sent envoys. One of them, Urwah ibn Mas'ud, returned amazed: "I have visited Caesar, Chosroes and the Negus, and I have never seen a king so honoured by his companions as Muhammad is by his."
The Prophet ﷺ sent Uthman ibn Affan (RA) to Makkah to explain their purpose. When a rumour spread that he had been killed, the Prophet ﷺ called the companions to pledge allegiance under a tree, and they pledged not to flee. Allah was pleased with them: "Certainly Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree" (48:18). This was Bay'at ar-Ridwan.
Then Suhayl ibn Amr came to negotiate. When Ali (RA) began writing "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful", Suhayl objected, and the Prophet ﷺ agreed to "In Your name, O Allah". When Ali wrote "Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah", Suhayl objected again, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "By Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah even if you deny me. Write: Muhammad ibn Abdullah." The terms were that the Muslims would return this year and come for Umrah the next; that there would be a truce of ten years; and that anyone from Quraysh who came to the Muslims would be returned, but not the reverse.
Just then Abu Jandal, Suhayl's son, who had become Muslim, arrived in chains, begging to be taken. Under the treaty he was returned, and the companions' grief was intense. Umar (RA) asked: "Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? Why should we accept humiliation in our religion?" The Prophet ﷺ said: "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I will not disobey Him; He will help me." Abu Bakr (RA) gave Umar the same answer.
When the Prophet ﷺ told them to sacrifice and shave their heads, no one moved. Umm Salamah (RA) advised him to go out and do it himself without speaking to anyone. He did, and the companions rushed to follow.
On the way home Allah revealed: "Indeed, We have given you a clear victory" (48:1). Umar asked: "Is it a victory, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." The peace allowed Islam to spread freely, and within two years the Prophet ﷺ marched on Makkah with ten thousand.
