In Ramadan 8 AH the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah with ten thousand believers, cleansed the Ka'bah of idols, and forgave the people who had persecuted him for years.
Two years after Hudaybiyyah, the tribe of Banu Bakr, allies of Quraysh, attacked Khuza'ah, allies of the Muslims, with help from some of Quraysh. The treaty was broken. The Prophet ﷺ prepared an army and kept its destination secret.
One companion, Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah (RA), worried about his family in Makkah, sent a secret letter warning Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ was informed by revelation and sent Ali (RA) and others, who found the letter with a woman on the road. Umar (RA) asked permission to punish Hatib, but the Prophet ﷺ accepted his excuse and said: "He was present at Badr. Perhaps Allah has looked at the people of Badr and said: Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you." Allah revealed the opening of Surah al-Mumtahanah (60:1).
In Ramadan of 8 AH (630 CE), the Prophet ﷺ marched with about ten thousand men. Near Makkah, Abu Sufyan, the leader of Quraysh, came out to see what was happening, was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ announced: "Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, whoever lays down his weapons is safe, and whoever closes his door is safe."
The army entered Makkah from several directions with almost no fighting. Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (RA) saw the Prophet ﷺ on his camel on the day of the conquest, reciting Surah al-Fath in a beautiful, rhythmic voice. The seerah books describe how he bowed his head in humility before Allah as he entered.
He went to the Ka'bah, around which stood three hundred and sixty idols. He struck them with a stick in his hand, reciting: "Truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish" (17:81). The images inside the Ka'bah were removed, and he prayed inside it. It is reported in the seerah that Bilal (RA) climbed onto the Ka'bah and called the adhan.
The people of Makkah gathered, the same people who had mocked him, boycotted his family, tortured his companions, driven him out and fought him for years. The seerah books report that he asked them: "What do you think I will do with you?" They said: "Good; you are a noble brother and the son of a noble brother." He said: "Go, for you are free," and some reports add that he quoted the words of Yusuf (AS) to his brothers: "No blame will there be upon you today" (12:92).
He also declared that Allah had made Makkah sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and that it would remain sacred until the Day of Resurrection.
Soon people entered Islam in crowds, as Allah had promised: "When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes, then exalt with praise of your Lord and ask His forgiveness" (110:1-3).
Lessons
- True greatness is shown by forgiving when you have the power to punish.
- Victory should bring humility and gratitude, not pride.
- Keep promises and treaties; breaking them brings consequences.
- Tawhid is the heart of Islam; the Ka'bah was restored to the worship of Allah alone.
- Look at people's whole record before judging their mistakes.
