Shu'ayb (AS) called the people of Madyan to worship Allah alone and to stop cheating in weights and measures. They mocked and threatened him, and were destroyed, while the believers were saved.
Allah sent Shu'ayb (AS) to the people of Madyan, who lived in north-west Arabia along the trade routes (Quran 7:85). Many commentators identify them with 'the companions of the thicket' (Ashab al-Aykah), to whom Shu'ayb was also sent (Quran 26:176-177), though some scholars consider these two separate communities.
Besides associating partners with Allah, their particular sin was dishonesty in trade. They gave short measure and weight, cheated people of their rightful due and spread corruption in the land; some sat by the roads threatening travellers and turning people away from Allah's path (Quran 7:85-86). Shu'ayb (AS) called them to worship Allah alone, to give full measure and weight in justice, and not to deprive people of what belongs to them (Quran 11:84-85). He told them that what remains with them lawfully, by Allah's leave, is better for them, if they are believers (Quran 11:86).
Shu'ayb was known for his eloquent and reasoned speech. His people mocked him, asking whether his prayers commanded them to abandon what their fathers worshipped, or to stop doing as they pleased with their own wealth (Quran 11:87). He replied that he did not wish to do himself what he forbade them; he wanted only to set things right as far as he was able, and his success came only from Allah, in whom he trusted (Quran 11:88). He warned them not to let their opposition to him bring upon them what struck the people of Nuh, Hud, Salih and Lut (Quran 11:89), and urged them to seek forgiveness and repent, for his Lord is Merciful and Loving (Quran 11:90).
The arrogant chiefs threatened to expel him and the believers unless they returned to their religion (Quran 7:88). They said they did not understand much of what he said, and that if it were not for his clan they would have stoned him (Quran 11:91). They called him bewitched and a liar, and challenged him to bring down a piece of the sky upon them (Quran 26:185-187).
Then the punishment came. The Quran describes it as an earthquake (Quran 7:91), a mighty blast (Quran 11:94) and the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud (Quran 26:189), each describing an aspect of their destruction. Allah saved Shu'ayb and those who believed with him by His mercy (Quran 11:94). Shu'ayb turned away from them, saying he had conveyed his Lord's messages and advised them sincerely, so how could he grieve over a people who disbelieved (Quran 7:93).
The Quran also tells of an old man in Madyan whose daughters Musa (AS) helped, and who married one of them to Musa (Quran 28:23-28). Many people identify this man as Shu'ayb, but the Quran does not name him, and scholars differ on whether it was him.
Lessons
- Honesty in business is part of faith; cheating in weights is a grave sin.
- Lawful profit, even if small, is better than unlawful gain.
- A caller to good must practise what he preaches.
- Faith is not only private worship; it governs how we use our wealth.
