Harun (AS) was made a prophet at Musa's request to support him in calling Pharaoh. He tried to stop the Children of Israel from worshipping the golden calf and was honoured alongside Musa.
Harun (AS) was the elder brother of Musa (AS) and his partner in the mission. When Allah sent Musa to Pharaoh, Musa asked his Lord to appoint a helper from his family – his brother Harun – to strengthen him and share in his task, so that together they might glorify Allah much and remember Him much (Quran 20:29-34). Musa explained that Harun was more eloquent in speech and could support and confirm him (Quran 28:34). Allah granted the request (Quran 20:36), and out of His mercy made Harun a prophet (Quran 19:53).
Together they went to Pharaoh. Allah instructed them to speak to him with gentle words, so that perhaps he might take heed or fear Allah (Quran 20:43-44) – a lasting lesson that even the most arrogant tyrant should first be addressed gently. Allah reassured them that He was with them, hearing and seeing (Quran 20:46).
When Musa went to the appointed meeting with Allah for forty nights, he left Harun in charge of the people, telling him to keep things in order and not to follow the way of those who spread corruption (Quran 7:142). In Musa's absence, as-Samiri led the people into worshipping a golden calf. Harun warned them that they were only being tested by it, that their Lord was the Most Merciful, and urged them to follow him and obey his command. They replied that they would keep worshipping it until Musa returned (Quran 20:90-91).
When Musa returned, angry and grieved, he took hold of his brother's head and beard. Harun pleaded, calling him 'son of my mother', explaining that the people had overpowered him and almost killed him, and that he had feared Musa would say he had caused division among the Children of Israel (Quran 7:150; 20:94). Musa then prayed for forgiveness for himself and his brother and asked Allah to admit them both into His mercy (Quran 7:151). The Quran makes clear that Harun was not at fault.
Allah honoured both brothers together: He gave them the clear Scripture, guided them to the straight path, and left praise of them among later generations – peace be upon Musa and Harun (Quran 37:114-120). The Prophet ﷺ met Harun in the fifth heaven during the Mi'raj (Sahih Muslim 162). When he left Ali ibn Abi Talib in charge of Madinah during the Tabuk expedition, he told him that he was to him as Harun was to Musa, except that there would be no prophet after him (Sahih al-Bukhari 4416; Sahih Muslim 2404).
The Quran does not describe Harun's death; historians mention that he passed away before Musa, during the years of wandering.
Lessons
- Good companions and helpers strengthen us in doing good.
- Even tyrants should first be invited with gentle words.
- Leaders must try to prevent wrong, while also guarding the unity of the community.
- Brothers should support and forgive one another.
