How Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) Accepted Islam

Sahaba

Umar was one of the fiercest opponents of Islam in Makkah until the Prophet ﷺ prayed for him. His acceptance of Islam brought strength and honour to the believers.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), of the clan of Adi of Quraysh, was known in Makkah for his strength, his stern temper and his sense of justice. He was one of the few people in Makkah who could read and write, and Quraysh used him as their envoy in disputes with other tribes. In the early years of Islam he was among its most determined opponents, because he saw the new religion as dividing the families and clans of Makkah.

The Prophet ﷺ prayed for him by name. He said: "O Allah, strengthen Islam through whichever of these two men is more beloved to You: Abu Jahl or Umar ibn al-Khattab." Allah chose Umar.

The best-known account of his conversion is reported by Ibn Ishaq in the seerah. It is reported that Umar set out one day, sword in hand, intending to kill the Prophet ﷺ. On the way a man told him: "Look first to your own family. Your sister Fatimah and her husband Sa'id ibn Zayd have become Muslims." Furious, Umar went to their house, where Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (RA) was teaching them Surah Ta-Ha from a written page. He struck his brother-in-law and injured his sister, but when he saw the blood on her face and heard her firm reply that she would never leave Islam, his heart softened. He asked for the page, and after washing as she asked, he read the opening of Surah Ta-Ha: "We have not sent down to you the Quran that you be distressed..." (20:2). He said, "How beautiful and noble are these words!" He then went to the house of al-Arqam near Safa, where the Prophet ﷺ and his companions gathered, and declared his Islam. Scholars of hadith note that the chains of this detailed narration are not fully authentic, but the fact of his conversion and its great effect are certain.

What is firmly established is the impact it had. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) said: "We have been strong and honoured ever since Umar accepted Islam." Before this, the weak Muslims hid their worship; after his conversion the believers grew bolder and began to pray openly near the Ka'bah. The seerah links his famous title al-Faruq, "the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood", to this period.

The Prophet ﷺ later praised the firmness of his faith, saying to him: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, Shaytan never meets you walking on a path except that he takes a path other than yours."

Umar (RA) became the second Caliph after Abu Bakr (RA) in 13 AH. During his ten years of rule the Muslim lands expanded greatly; he adopted the Hijri calendar, organised the public treasury and registers, and was known for walking the streets at night to check on the needy. He was martyred in 23 AH while leading the Fajr prayer, and was buried beside the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA). The man who once raised his sword against Islam became one of its greatest servants.
